Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Hi everyone!

I need some help regarding purchasing the VIZ Dragonball managa.
I want to get all 42 volumes of the VIZ Dragonball manga at the same time. Do you know how much it would cost to buy all 42 together? I think each one costs 7.95.
Also, where can I buy all 42 together and have it mailed to me? Could I ask my local Books-A-Million to order all 42 of them and then send it to me? Or, do they not do that?
If they don't, where/how can I purchase all 42 together?
Thanks for any help/advice anyone can give.

I'd think so, although it's a bit psychotic. You should dish out around $336 for it, too. I'd just look for a bundle on Ebay.
If you want them all, though, I'd just wait for the Kanzenban releases. If those are really the size of three normal books, you'd be saving $4 for every three...
Making it only around $252.

I agree. You've picked a good time to start collecting, as Viz is going to be releasing bigger, thicker re-releases of DragonBall early next year.
The news story
I don't have too much of the manga either, so I'm going to use this to collect the series. Especially if there's colored chapters involved.

How long would it take for them to release the bigger ones? I already like the current VIZ ones out right now.
What would you say are the differences between the current ones out and the ones going to be released in the future?

What do you mean when you say the size of three normal books? Do you mean 3 volumes in one?
How long will it take for the Kanzeban releases?

"The May 2008 launch titles under Viz Big include Rurouni Kenshin, Dragon Ball, and Dragon Ball Z."

Yep, one of these new ones should be have the volume of three normal books (ie, Volumes 1,2, and 3 in one book) and also have the original colored inserts (instead of grayscaled pictures).

Depends on their release schedule. I think someone worked the numbers and said that, in all, there'd be about 17 volumes. If it's bimonthly, like I'm guessing it will be, they'd all be released in about two years time. If they release "DragonBall" and "DragonBall Z" separately and simultaneously, you'd have them all in about a year.
What would you say are the differences between the current ones out and the ones going to be released in the future?
The new ones will contain three tankobon volumes' worth in one (
I think someone said earlier that the Kanzenban were about 1.5 Tankobans of material each), and will offer "
new illustrations on paperback covers with gatefold flaps, color page inserts, and a larger print size (5.75 by 8.625 inches)." Hopefully "color page inserts" will mean Kanzenban-like original colored manga pages.

Will they sell these new ones at bookstores?
I still want to purchase all 42 of the original VIZ ones. Is that ok?
Also, are the new ones going to be a lot bigger in height, etc?
Also, can I order all 42 from my local Books-A-Million and have them mail it to me. Do bookstores do that, or they don't?

Get an eBay account and wait for someone to sell the sets at a good price. I got the first 16 volumes for only 37 bucks plus 13 S&H.

Vegerot, Djin Buu, Hercule (although I can live with that one).
That answer your question?

The dialogue translation is still pretty much intact. It doesn't compare to FUNi's dub at all. Viz English DBZ Manga is a satisfactory of not good alternative to
learning Japanese.
Anyway, about buying them...
www.deepdiscountdvd.com has a lost of the volumes for 6 bucks each. Free shipping and handling.

Yeah, besides the odd name translations/changes, there's really nothing missing from Viz's manga.

The severity of the edits is often exaggerated as well. Just a few gun alterations and an added bra. That's all I can recall.
And while extremely odd, the only name change that's utterly and completely stupid is Hercule.

...and even then, there's a good reason behind it.
Viz DB = Good

Oh, those. I don't know why they would pick Dijin (don't know what that means...)
But I can live with Vegerot. Hell, I say it's more of an English language correction than a stupid edit.

Dijin is an Arabic (?) word meaning, roughly, 'genie', which is pretty much what Buu is. The logic is that they needed to translate 'Majin' so they chose 'Dijin'.
Disregarding the fact that there are Ms everywhere, I've always had a problem with it. I mean, it's fine to translate the term, but translate it into English.
