Original vs. American

Yeah, but when you're operating on two different screens, I want to know what's actually being said (IE: Watching the Japanese on my DVD player while on the computer).

Dude, it's all a matter of paying attention. o_O There can be shows or movies in English that you could have on the TV while being on the computer and still not have a 100% idea of what's going on due to not paying attention to what's going on on the screen.

I would prefer this type of topic not to be made, but since this the Daizenshuu EX forums, I guess the exception can be made.

As most others have the said the Japanese version for similar reasons. Ryo Horikawa is like a god amongst seiyuu. Even now as he does a minor role as Hermit in Kenichi, his voice is still as great as ever. Masako Nozawa, despite her high-pitched voice, does a better adaptation of Goku then any other VA if not for her "hick" dialect. Well I could go on....& on, but I'm not going to.

I like both for their own reasons, but I'm fully aware that they're two completely seperate things.

To me, the English version is like "The Fast and the Furious." I watch it and laugh at how bad it is/how little sense it makes.

The English Dub was all I knew for many years, and the Ocean Dub is chock full of nostalgia for me, but I can hardly tolerate to watch any part of DBZ dubbed anymore. I am strictly for and in love with the Japanese version. If you need reasons, look at all the pro-Japanese version posts.

Agreed that for the most part I prefer the Japanese. I don't like Masako Nozawa, but aside from Kyle Hebert, I don't like any of the actors who replaced her, either. Ryo Horikawa is a genius, while Chris Sabat's Vegeta has grown on me but I still recognize it's not as good.

There's only a couple of things the dub has over the original:

1) A very few music tracks, mostly during the Cell Saga. Cell's Perfect theme. And, of course, Ginyu Transformation/End Of Cell.

2) Dameon Clarke. Took the role of Cell and completely made it his own. Of the entire cast, both Japanese and American, his turn as Cell is the only one where I think he completely and totally did a far superior job to the original.

Bleh, I haven't seen enough of the Japanese version, but I just like the way it sounds. Have no idea what's going on half the time (two semesters of Japanese does not make up for not being able to read subtitles. ^^).

As for the music... I like both the Japanese and the Faulconer stuff, really. Not nearly enough silence in the FUNi dub (which makes it very awkward to have silent scenes when making fanmovies...), but there are a good number of awesome uses of music there (mostly from Cell to Uub, though... season3 has horrible horrible uses of music... like... I want to hit part of the equipment to make sure it's playing the right stuff in the background...).

And dadgummit, it's become difficult to separate Schimel(sp?)'s voice from Goku.

When I think about Vegeta, I hear Drummond. Scot McNeil is still Piccolo in my head. But from the instant I heard Nozawa's Goku, I could accept nothing else as his voice. It was a crappy fansub for Movie 8, and I was like "That is Goku."

Also faulconers music is great, you lot my like the japanese music better because "it give it a mood setting" but faulconer has done the best dub music for any show by far. *

The Bruce Faulconer music can be pretty cool, but it just doesn't fit with Dragon Ball.

Like most of people, I prefer the japanese version...
I always watch all my animes in japanese with subtitles...Japanese know how to dub for sure!!!
I have the impression that Americans and English-Canadians don't know how to dub an anime.Voices are always horrible!
The english version of DBZ for exemple look more like a WWF match to me!
No offense to the americans voice actors! They are the coolest guys I haver ever met!
I juste HATE Stephanie Nadolny's voice for young Gohan....but the girl is sooo kind you cannot believe it!!! I meet her in a convention and I exchange some mails with her back in 2001.

That's actually just like my first experience with the Japanese version when I saw the fansub of Movie 13. The scene where Nozawa delivered that scream when turning SSJ3 was just amazing and suddenly, Schemmel didn't sound so great anymore.

Wow, I had the exact opposite reaction. Schemmel's voice is the only one I match with Goku (grown-up, anyways).

I personally watch the English version only, for a few reasons. First, English is my primary language and I am someone who has to hear it to truly enjoy a cartoon/show/film. To me it is very annoying to have to read the subtitles the whole way through and it takes away from my experiance.
Second, I like the cast better. For example, I enjoy Sean Schemmel's voice a lot more than the Japanese actor. I am never able to get used to it's high pitch. I do appreciate and respect the tradition of keeping the same voice actor no matter how old the character is, but it just doesn't hit home for me the way Schemmel's voice does. I think he does a very good job.
Third, I like the script. There are certain lines from Funimation's DragonballZ that mean a lot to me and I keep close. They do make mistakes (like that awfull Veggito episode where they called the Masenko the Galic Gun), but generally it does well for me. I've even learned to embrace the speech about Bardock being a brilliant scientist and creating the moon blast. It doesn't bother me at all.
Fourth, and finaly, I think it's really cool that Dragonball has been adapted into so many languages. I feel good reeping these rewards and am proud to watch the anime in my native language.
The English Dragonball is something very special to me and I could never replace it with the original. I don't hate the Japanese version, however, and as a fan I do often go and compare their names for moves, ect.; just out of curiosity.

Many of you strongly disagree with me, but my opinion will always hold. I hope nobody gets too angry, for I respect the oposite opinion as well.

Two small notes.

1) The "brilliant scientist" line was done away with in the redub. :p

2) Just about every other dub of Dragon Ball/Z/GT in a different language is more of a translation rather than an adaption. Apparently the English dub is the odd one out by trying to be rather "creative" with the music and dialogue, whereas everyone else attempts to actually translate the franchise (even if some of the foreign dubs are quite...bad in terms of voiceovers).

As for the subject itself, I'm sticking with the Japanese version. There are several anime I can watch in either language. Dragon Ball/Z/GT is definately not one of those. In fact, I'm gonna have to say I love the Mexican dub almost as much, if not more, than the original Japanese version.

Like many others, I was introduced to DBZ through the English dub, so, despite it's flaws, it holds a special place in my fandom. Even though I've come to prefer the obvious Japanese, there are still a few things and moments I prefer in the dub.

Well, for me :

1-Japanese. No question. It's the original, and I like the acting.

2-French : same music as the original (sometimes without the lyrics), bad adaptation, but good acting.

3-English : I've only watched it on curiosity, and really, I hate both the acting and the music. It's only my opinion, though.
