A good look at DBZ in widescreen with no footage cropped

A good look at DBZ in widescreen with no footage cropped

One cool thing about the X Box 360 is that it has a letterbox option for any DVD that allows you to put a DVD into a letterbox format, resizing the picture so that nothing's cropped. (I use this option whenever I'm watching the old DBZ DVD's), and you get more footage at the top and bottom (of course, it's not all pixilated looking like the shot above). Just imagine if Funi did that.

Special thanks to ECT5150 for providing the images in his photobucket album.

Honestly, though, I'd rather have footage that's slightly cropped over footage that's "squished."

I think it looks better that way. And thanks to watching the DVDs in the option for my 360, it's damn near impossible for me to watch DBZ in full screen. Also, they look more "natural" with this option.

The wrinkled lines make Piccolo look much older than he already is. :?

It's not supposed to look like that though. Whenever I use that option on X-Box 360, the lines don't get wrinkled...MS paint FTMFL.

No offense, but it looks terrible. I'd rather have it cropped than squished like that.

Again, it only looks wrinkled because of MS Paint. If you watch it on the 360 (the 3 disc DVDs) with the first letterbox option, then you see what I'm talking about. It's smaller, but not wrinkly looking.

Those images are pretty squished... Open an episode of DB with VLC Player and change the aspect ratio to 16:9 and you will see that it looks a lot better then FUNimation's job.

I don't understand what the point of this is.

What is the point of this?, are you still trying to justify your purchase of the season sets?, I really don't get it.

I own the first, and intend to continue buying them (not because I like cropped footage and questionable remastering) because they are cheap, and it's the only way I'll be able obtain the entire series legally.

People know the product, you aren't going to convert anyone that hates it with crappy MS paint images.

I really don't understand people's obsession with having everything in Widescreen regardless of what it does to the picture, as if that somehow makes it "better." Doing this would be about on-par with FUNi's releases, in that it modifies or distorts the original. Stretching, squishing, cropping... all of these things fuck with what's already good-to-watch. Just keep shit the same, please.

So, um, "fucking with video makes it look terrible"? That's it? We knew that.

If the original broadcast was in widescreen, then I'd want widescreen. If the original broadcast is fullscreen, then it sure as hell better stay in fullscreen.

As much as I hate to use catchphrases... "Thread does not deliver."

There's nothing remotely "good" about the way those images look. They look like ass. Generally, if one wants to show off how nice something looks, they should provide high quality visuals. This is like a supermodel going to a photo shoot with no make-up and disheveled, dirty hair; she's not selling anything like that.

Unfortunately, the average joes have started getting widescreen TVs, and they don't like the black bars that come with 4:3 video. It's a repeat of thirty or so years ago when people wanted pan-and-scan movies so it filled up their 4:3 TVs. Which is kind of funny (and sad) when you think about it, since the anti-pan-and-scan fight is probably a good part of why widescreen TVs started becoming popular in the first place.

(And misinterpretation of that same fight is what makes some uninformed fanboys spout "WIEDSCREENZ IS MORE PICTURE!!!!" in regard to these season sets.)

I think people just have trouble admitting what they paid money for isn't the best thing out there.

This guy is trying to justify the widescreen of the season sets by squishing perfectly fine 4:3 images into 16:9, I really don't get it, I'd prefer the cropping to having characters squished out of proportion.

Something tells me we'll be seeing a lot more of this in the coming months (Especially when the later box sets are released, the Androids and Buu stuff)

Listen. Easy simple formula
4:3 DBZ = enjoyment
16:9 DBZ = enjoyment for some
4:3 DBZ Squashed into 16:9 = WTF?!

Eh, the captures clearly aren't a very good reflection of how it probably looks in motion. I think it would be less of a problem if FUNimation had done this, but it's still...odd.

When you get used to like I have, it's not all that weird. And yeah, it definitely doesn't look like that in motion. MS Paint just sucks.
