No need to justify yourself. According to Amazon you're in the majority, anyway.

According to Amazon, most DBZ fans don't know grammar or how to spell either ;p

P.S. - The reviews there make me laugh. The people (and by that, I mean 12 year olds) seem so violently defensive of these sets that all I can do is try not to die from lack of oxygen during a laughing fit.

You'll find crap grammar amongst DBZ fans at a lot more places than Amazon.

To be fair, there are about the same number of reviews that unceremoniously bash these sets . . . some of them with proper grammar, even. The majority of those, however, tend to mark the cropping as the only negative aspect and defend things like the picture quality's loss of grain, the lack of which is nearly equal to their apparent lack of understanding regarding why this too is a negative thing (considering the means used to accomplish it). :D

All I ever wanted was complete seasons on DVD for an affordable price. Didn't really need or want the widescreen or remastering, but it doesn't really effect the quality of the series at it's core.

But if you really want to act smug because you have something that isn't available to most of the American public anyway, go ahead.

Wow. Seriously, I have a real problem with people picking on Corey like this.

Never once has he been smug toward the people who buy these sets. Not. One. Time.

What he's smug about, if anything, is that he has the superior PRODUCT, wherein he is indeed 100% correct. These sets, while all that some of us may be able to afford (despite that even this isn't quite an "excuse," as the clear lesson in DragonBox vs. Season Sets is You Get What You Pay For), are laughable and an insult compared to what DBZ gets for treatment overseas, and the fact that people go so far out of the way to defend them on the most baffling levels ("the widescreen isn't that bad; it makes things look cinematic except for the part where you lose Nappa's head, LOL") is demonstration of the fact that they themselves likely know the facts and go out of their way to ignore them as part of some sort of pissing contest with the faction of consumers who voice legitimate complaints against the same product . . . or hell, just to convince themselves that they didn't make a flawed purchase. Ignorance runs incredibly deep in some aspects of the DBZ fandom.

Corey has never done anything but A) give us pure facts pertaining to the DragonBox releases and B) point out the unquestionable reasons why their American counterparts are flawed by comparison. The key word here is "comparison". When you mix the two things, you're gonna get something that some of us might not like-- it's called the truth, and it sucks. But Corey isn't responsible for that; FUNimation is.

Yeah I take that back. I just don't want to get grouped with the 12 year olds just because I can't get my hands on the superior product. This is by no means a DVD near that of the Dragon Box, as it's pretty bare-bones and it doesn't really even do that right. What else is there, though?

Well, my original comment about Amazon was more in relation to the number of sales and where the sets are placed in "Top Sellers" in the Anime category. I meant to say that people don't really need to defend themselves on buying the season sets if Season 3 is outselling everything else right now and both Seasons 1 and 2 are still in the top 25.

I'd have cashed my paycheck and picked up Season 3 today, had I not forgotten that the bank closes at noon on Saturdays. Ah, well, probably have to wait till Monday...

Agreed. I wanted them since I was 14, around the time I turned 19 I gave up. That was in 2003 :P

We disagree, but that's cool.

Technically it's not available to the American public at all (unless you import), but I digress. The main reason it isn't, however, is because the DBZ audience in North America...well, doesn't give a shit. They either are apathetic or ignorant, take your pick. If the majority of them did care, we'd probably get "Dragonball Z: Platinum" like the Evangelion fans did. It is possible people.

Just like, on the flipside, ADV tried to milk the property last year and the fans threw a shit-fit. Guess what? It got canned.

Hm, milking a property...good thing no one tried that with DBZ! ;p

Look, my whole point is this: Objectively, these sets are fucking horrible. If you're not a fan of the show, the sets are a horrible attempt to capitalize on a popular namesake. If you are a fan of the show, it's ten times worse.

Do you have any choice? No. Do I fault people for buying these? No, because in all honesty FUNimation's own target audience is children. I do, however, fault people for getting all defensive about owning these sets, or taking an "I don't give a shit" attitude. If you don't give a shit, why does it bug you so much that I criticize the sets?

Well, FUNimation is to blame there. They actually say you're a 9 year old, but I added 3 years ;p

And my comment was actually directed at people like this:

Firstly this is a awesome set and i was a bit curious wether i should buy it because of the widescreen thing well let me tell u I'm glad i did u cant even notic its widescreen and the image previews on this page is a lie the guys said they put the colur up to a rediculus extend I've got the set and hes ling he edited it himself to make it look bad so plz dont take the picture littaral

I mean, really. Wow.

I have season 1 and 2. Don't care about the differences. Sometimes the cropping is noticed, most of the time for me it isn't. The colors are great, and it's cheap. I'm not THAT hardcore of a fan. Now I just want Season 3 but my damn WAL*MART seems to have sold them all, or not put them up yet. They even have the sticker up. Bleh.

Indeed.

The lack of lines really brings out the color in Goku's eyes.

Magnificent.

Last I checked from screenshots provided, Season 2's colors looked worse than VHS fansubs that've been recorded from three generations of VHS tapes before.

So yeah, I ended up buying seasons two and three since they were dirt cheap (Both $25.) not to mention I mind as well get them for Daimao's subtitles. I haven't bothered watching season two but I have watched bits and pieces of season three and there's some fantastic moments to be had.

This was pretty funny to me. :P

"Oof! Damn widescreen bars!" - Recoome

Image

"Yup, looks like everything worked out in the end." - Goku
*Piccolo gets his head chopped off*
"Uh..." - Gohan

And a PNG of Goku the Super Saiya-blob:

This also happens to Kaio-sama's attenae when they move.

EDIT: Also, there seems to be an audio problem for the japanese track of either episode 97 or 98. It makes it sound all wavy for the first ten minutes of the episode. Might be just the age of the audio track taking its toll.
