Wow, some of that looks decent. Of course that Vegeta shot looks like all kinds of cock-shit, but, you know, almost a decent job.

I can't argue with you on that. It just looked a bit off to me.EricM wrote:That's old Funimation DVD quality right there for ya.SatoSky wrote:Is it really? No offense or anything, but those screens look like crap. They're blurrier than a picture of Bigfoot, half as fuzzy too.
A modern, well made DVD by a real studio would look a bit better, but HD still takes the cake.

Well, the colors look nice, but I think its still apparent they DVR'ed it. Its hard to imagine a release that wasn't half-assed from FUNI. Plus, it looks like the encoding went well. Just think if they had done this with DragonBox footage, the ultimate set of DBZ would be from FUNI in the US and not Japan.EricM wrote:Blu-ray on left, US DVD on right (cropped, and scaled to match)
Oh yeah, the big question: Is there ANY Nappa Toothpaste Effects at all ?!?!?
I ask to verify if it really was a "bad down conversion" (which I don't believe in, but hey... it would be evidence that guy is a complete moron).

Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.
DB DBox color corrections & DBox color corrections.

Eh, bitrate correlates to the complexity of the image. Since DragonBall Z isn't the most complex, and AVC is a much better codec that MPEG-2, it's not that important to have skyrocketing bitrates. The encode on these discs is probably the best thing I've ever seen come out of FUNi's doors (and I've seen their stuff since way back with Ginyu - Assault), the only problem really is the DVNR, lack of lossless audio tracks, and maybe some standard bells and whistles that every other Blu-ray I own has (pop-up menus, etc.).EricM wrote:Yeah, I think the colors are nice. The bitrate could better though, hehe. I know you're thinking 20 Mbps MPEG-4 is awesome, but other Blu-ray anime I have is 30-35 Mbps, like Ghost in the Shell 1 and 2, Jin-Roh, Brave Story, Honneamise. Believe me, everything looks better in HD, even animation.

I can host 'em. Email me with that link at the bottom.MajinVejitaXV wrote:I snapped some comparison shots. Can someone host? They're PNG format, 2mb a piece and I did 3. They're not the exact frames, but close enough.

I don't think that most people do right now.MajinVejitaXV wrote:Not to sound like a snob, but do you have an HDTV?NeptuneKai wrote:Am I still the only person left who thinks this show doesn't need to look any better then what was on the DVDs? The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

25% install base, doubled from last year. With the further proliferation of HD technology and proportional drop in price, that number will continue to increase. Personally, I invested in one when I finished paying off my car in 2004, and I think the difference in clarity between even the best SD material and HD material is night and day. And I only have a 720p display (granted, a nice one), not a newfangled 1080p one.Raki wrote:I don't think that most people do right now.MajinVejitaXV wrote:Not to sound like a snob, but do you have an HDTV?NeptuneKai wrote:Am I still the only person left who thinks this show doesn't need to look any better then what was on the DVDs? The people who piss on advances in technology are nothing new though. Each time a new technology comes about, there are detractors (most of which who have had no exposure to it). I've seen it in my lifetime with cassette to CD, VHS to DVD, video game cartridges to optical media, etc. Technology changes, and personally I'm okay with that. It's not like the consumer is forced to buy the new at the onset, hell DVD's will probably have a lifespan of several more years, so it's not like you have to jump on the HD boat.
