Please excuse me if this is old news, but I just discovered that the 87eleven stunt team will be working alongside the team responsible for this film. Awesome, my hopes just skyrocketed. (in the action choreography aspect)

I have to admit, they do look professional.

Here's a much better translation of Eriko Tamura's blog.

From the airport, we went right to the studio in Mexico City. I met with Producer Tim, and chatted with him a bit. I then met the other Producer, Jim (the second time since the audition.) After that, I was brought directly into makeup, and had to test the camera.
The Studios in Mexico differ from those of Hollwood, after all, studios differ in different parts of the world. My co-star, an actress from Hollywood (Emmy Rossum, most likely), was surprised because there are no trailers in Mexico. I was fine with it, there are no trailers in Japan either.
I was very glad to get a welcome from director James Wong,(Final Destination, The One, and furthermore the televison series "The X-Files"), when I got to Mexico City. I am really honored to be working together with a competent director, in such a good-looking film. I feel really lucky and am grateful to be able to work with him. He has become one of favorite directors to work with, because he is gentle and calm while directing.
After the camera tests, and other events, he took me out to a wonderful restaurant for dinner, where we discussed my role, and various things about the movie over a delicious meal. He spoke in Japanese with me, and commented that I should try various things with the role, and said that it was sort of "Over the Top." Having connected this from the auditions to this discussion I feel really good about what the director believes.

This tells us that Mai will be "over-the-top" so we can expect er, zanniness.

I don't know if i really dig the Mystique-esque shape shifting Mai, but I'll take that over other things they could be doing wrong with this movie.
As on the fence as I've been with this, I'm really starting to lean in the direction being able to enjoy this move for what it is. Not totally true to DB, but not totally... NOT DB.
I think it's going to be interesting.

Well, that's why they call it an "adaptation."Artificial Human #887 wrote:As on the fence as I've been with this, I'm really starting to lean in the direction being able to enjoy this move for what it is. Not totally true to DB, but not totally... NOT DB.

That's right. I actually haven't seen anything suggesting this Teto guy is a replacement Krillin. I mean, they said he's a minor character, and they finished shooting all his scenes in just 2 days. Even if Krillin doesn't end up being in this movie, I doubt they'd exclude him altogether in the suspected/implied trilogy.JAPPO wrote:Casting is ongoing, Krillin might not be replaced.
And yeah, there's still casting things that haven't been revealed. Like who's playing Gohan, would be the most major one, I think.

No, an adaptation would be live action version of Dragon Ball. Still Dragon Ball, just live action. Sure, some things get changed, because it's unavoidable and adaptations are never perfect.SSj Kaboom wrote:Well, that's why they call it an "adaptation."![]()
See: Pride and Prejudice (1813 novel) -> Pride and Prejudice (1995 BBC miniseries)
Using an existing story and characters as a base, but using it only as a starting point to tell a different story is best described as an homage.
See: Pride and Prejudice (1813 novel) -> Bride and Prejudice (2004 film)
Taking an existing story and dismembering it to a point where it is barely recognizable, is neither an adaptation nor an homage. It's a rip-off.
See: Pride and Prejudice (1813 novel) ->Bridget Jone's Diary (1996 novel/2001 film)
Guess which one of these categories the new Dragon Ball film falls under?
(é) Yeah, I'm famous. Super famous. I start things.

I guess by those definitions, it falls under an "homage", since it cannot very well be a ripoff. Unless you're saying they're ripping off the "popularity" of Dragonball, by telling their own story, and replacing the character names with Dragonball names?desirecampbell wrote:Guess which one of these categories the new Dragon Ball film falls under?

No, the whole point of an homage is that it's not trying to be the original. If Fox made a new movie called High School Invasion: Alien Ninjas, and the aliens were from 'Planet Namek' or they laned in one-man space pods, then we could say it was an homage. But they're clearing trying to be Dragon Ball.FindKenshi wrote:I guess by those definitions, it falls under an "homage", since it cannot very well be a ripoff. Dragon Ball is an homage, itself. It's very close to Journey to the West - but it's not trying to be JTTW. It's taking that as a starting point and builds from that.

They promise me live action Dragon Ball, and we get, basically, "High School Invasion: Alien Ninjas". *shrug* Sounds shifty to me.FindKenshi wrote:Ok, point taken--but I don't see how you could call this a ripoff. I mean, it has Dragonball in the title, it's not like they're trying to decieve anyone.
I'm actually kind of disappointed it's not being made. I'd go see it.FindKenshi wrote:Anyway, thanks for that image of "Highschool Invasion: Alien Ninjas", as that is just hillarious.

About the whole Teto thing. I doubt he is a replacement for Krillin. It says he's a minor character.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Krillin was a minor character in dragonball. Well, major enough to not be minor in a live action film.
