So essentially, you're saying that Gohan doesn't serve a purpose, even though removing him would have essentially been the same as REWRITING THE ENTIRE STORY, changing several major plot-points and completely changing a ton of stuff. By your logic, why not do One Piece without Luffy's crew or Death Note without L and Near ?

I don't know enough about One Piece or Death Note to comment on those comparisons, but duh that removing Gohan would've changed the story. Removing Lunch would change the story too.

My point was that removing Gohan doesn't drastically change the story until the Buu Saga (due to his and Goku's stupidity lengthening that saga). Piccolo was already slowly becoming 'good'. Gohan didn't contribute anything to the Saiyan battle that couldn't have been done by another character except pussing out when fighting Nappa. Nor did he add anything unique to the Namek, Freeza, or Android Sagas.

His first and only 'essential' act comes with SSJ2 at the Games, but that's easily replaced with Vegeta ascending from Trunks' death.

Then Gohan dithers around in the Buu Saga, accomplishing nothing again despite being 'the main character'.

But hey, if you'd like one with less rewriting...

Raditz shows up, scares Piccolo and kicks Goku in the gut. Assuming Bulma is Goku's mate, he kidnaps her and tells Goku he'll kill her if Goku doesn't pile a thousand dead humans on the island by tomorrow. Goku and Piccolo team up to fight Raditz. During the battle, Bulma breaks out of the pod and machine-guns Raditz. Caught off-guard, Raditz can't catch the bullets and takes some hits. Angered, he moves to kill Bulma, giving Goku the chance to grab him. Piccolo kills them both with the Special Beam Cannon.

During the Saiyan fight, Piccolo dies at Nappa's hand, then Goku arrives, saving Krillin from death also. Goku heals Krillin, beats down Nappa. Vegeta kills Nappa, he and Goku leave to fight elsewhere.

Krillin returns, sensing Goku's energy falling, and cuts off Oozaru-Vegeta's tail (Vegeta can't sense ki, and doesn't suspect anyone is nearby with no Gohan to attempt to distract him). As Vegeta turns against Krillin, Goku eats the half of the Senzu he kept, restoring him enough to throw the Spirit Bomb. Vegeta dodges, Krillin rebounds it (he's pure enough to hold it, so why not?), and Vegeta takes a hard hit. Vegeta recovers from the Spirit Bomb, but he's now weakened enough that the partially-restored Goku and Krillin (and Yajirobe) are able to fight with him. Vegeta eventually realizes he has to retreat, both to gain strength from healing and grab the Dragonballs from Namek. Goku allows him to leave.

Bulma and Krillin want to wait for Goku to get better before heading to Namek until Krillin recalls that Vegeta was going there too. They set off, Goku follows some time later after new Senzu grows. Piccolo and crew reach King Kai's and begin training.

Despite not being hotheaded, Krillin can't stand by and watch a kid be murdered, leading to his rescue of Dende. Chased by Dodoria, Krillin tosses Dende in a sweet forward pass to get his hands free to use the Tayoken.

Krillin meets the Elder Namek, gets his DB and potential unlocked, and tears off towards Bulma. Vegeta and Zarbon spot him and follow, Vegeta bullies the DB out of Krillin's hands and kills Zarbon. He then flies off to his stash of the other DBs while Krillin takes Bulma back to the Elder Namek to ask what the hell they do now.

Vegeta finds he can't get his wish despite having all the Dragonballs. He hides a Dragonball again and flies off to find Krillin, thinking the Earthling would know how to activate them (Vegeta doesn't know about the Dragon Radar, having never meet Gohan and seen it). Unable to find him, Vegeta sits and waits to sense the human.

Days later, Krillin kicks it to full speed, thinking he's far enough away that Vegeta can't sense him, and realizing that the lack of a dark sky means the DBs haven't been used yet (and that something special probably needs to be done to use them).

Vegeta reaches the Elder Namek's place, confronts Krillin, then senses the Ginyu Force's arrival. Realizing how outgunned they are (no unlocked-potential-Gohan), Vegeta yells at Nail to come with them if he can fight. The three shoot off to Vegeta's main stash of DBs, then the Force arrives and Ginyu takes them to Freeza.

With Nail's help, Recoome is killed, but he and Vegeta get overwhelmed by Burter and Jeice. Freeza finds that he only has six DBs and orders Ginyu to get back there and get Vegeta to tell where the other DB is. Freeza will meanwhile leave to the last group of Nameks in case Vegeta actually didn't have the last DB.

Goku arrives, heals Nail and Vegeta (Krillin escaped major harm with such a powerful ally), then crushes Burter and Jeice. Ginyu arrives, Nail leaves to protect the Elder, Krillin goes to get the six DBs, and Vegeta abandons Goku to Ginyu and Jeice, thinking he can get his DB and force Krillin to reveal the password.

Goku gets bodyswapped with Ginyu, Nail "fights" Freeza, and Dende heads off to tell Krillin the password. Vegeta finds out Krillin doesn't know it and is about to take off for the Elder's when Ginyu-Goku and Jeice show up. Krillin finds out G-G isn't Goku when he gets punched upside the head, but he's stronger and can take the hit.

Vegeta kills Jeice, but since he didn't take as much damage earlier, he didn't get as much of a power boost. After dragging Goku to the regen tank, Vegeta takes a quick nap. During this nap, Dende arrives. Krillin and Dende wish Piccolo alive and to Namek, then the DBs die as Vegeta and Freeza arrive.

With no Gohan to take some of Freeza's attacks, Vegeta has to fight more against his second form, then Piccolo-Nail arrives and Freeza move to his third form. Again, with no Gohan to get a mega power-up and put the fear of the Super Saiyan into Freeza, he remains in his third form, allowing the Z Fighters to cling to life until Vegeta's mega-powerup forces Freeza to transform.

Goku arrives as Freeza beats down and kills Vegeta. Piccolo gets zapped and Krillin dies and Goku becomes the Super Saiyan. After giving enough energy to Piccolo to allow him to regenerate, Goku and Freeza continue fighting.

Kami's loophole gets everybody to Earth but the quarreling titans.Goku defeats Freeza, gets away from the exploding Namek on a Ginyu spacepod.

He arrives on Earth after Trunks kills Kold (and Freeza, if you just have to have that part). Goku and Piccolo train, Vegeta trains and bangs Bulma, the androids show up, heart virus, SSJ Vegeta, Gero gets away, Trunks returns, android twins and #16 released, Vegeta gets whooped, Krillin gets kissed.

Trunks finds the wreck of what looks like his time machine, Piccolo fuses with Kami, Goku heals and suggests the time chamber. Vegeta and Trunks go in, come out, fuck up fighting Cell as Goku trains alone in the chamber.

At the Cell Games, Goku kills Cell with the Warp Kamehameha, which destroys Cell's core (which is in his head). Trunks goes back to the future.

Vegeta achieves FPSSJ after some time and has a rematch with Goku, which the latter wins in part because of the Instant Transmission. Vegeta begins to accept that Goku may simply be better than him as they begin to become friendly rivals.

When the World Tournament rolls around again, the Z Fighters decide to enter for fun, agreeing to not use Super Saiyan. Goku and Vegeta's fight is interrupted when Babidi's guys attack and steal Vegeta's energy.

The Saiyans, Piccolo and Krillin head off after them after Kibito heals Vegeta. Krillin gets turned to stone, Piccolo goes in the ship with Goku and Vegeta. Piccolo kills Pui Pui, and Vegeta just laughs when Goku taps into SSJ2 for a moment to kill Yakon.

Vegeta fights Dabura and is forced to go SSJ2 to kill him. Unable to get enough energy to revive Buu, Babidi is killed and the Kai takes the Buu Ball and hides it somewhere.

How's that?

Trunks never fought the Androids before Gohan's death. If he avoided them that long, he could avoid them a bit longer for the time machine to be completed, especially since his only influence would be his mom.

Speaking of which, even if Trunks does get killed, Bulma can travel back in her time machine to warn the guys.

For me, I could see everything from the opening of Z to the end of Cell without Gohan.

Been hanging around Rocketman a lot lately I see?

I only bring the light to the masses, it is their responsibility to accept it.

But why stop at Cell? For all the fapping over Z being "Gohan's story", he's barely needed at all.

Piccolo was already softening by the time Raditz came to Earth, because Raditz went to hell instead of roaming the Earth after death. So, Piccolo's deevilfication gets a boost from fulfilling his purpose and avenging his father by killing Goku.

In the Saiyan battle, realizing his sacrifice would bring the number of Earth's defenders down to two, Tenshinhan doesn't go on his last ride. Since there's no Gohan for Krillin to have misplaced trust in, the Piccolo-Krillin double team on Nappa ends with Krillin slicing Nappa in half with the Destructo-Disc.

Vegeta kills Piccolo when he picks up Goku's getting closer. Goku gives Krillin and Tenshinhan the Senzu, then leaves to fight Vegeta. That fight plays out as normal, with Tenshinhan's Tri-Beam taking Gohan-Oozaru's place.

Little difference on Namek, as Gohan never gained a huge advantage over Krillin, even with the unlock potential. Tenshinhan manages to bluff Vegeta, largely because Vegeta's high on 'got all the dragonballs!'. The Recoome fight lasts a bit longer since Tenshinhan's not as retarded as Gohan was. The end result is about the same, though.

Piccolo still gets to King Kai's for his self-sacrifice to protect the Earth and a bit of bureaucratic fudging (Piccolo should've gone to hell, one self-sacrificing save of a kid notwithstanding - Vegeta was going to hell even with his sacrifice against Buu). He goes to Namek and fuses with Nail, which alters his personality more.

The Freeza fight is somewhat tougher, but between Freeza's toying with them and Tenshinhan's Tri-Beam, it plays out to Krillin's death and Goku's ascension. Without a son, Krillin is still the closest person to Goku, and the Super Saiyan tears Freeza apart. Goku leaves Namek with Tenshinhan and Bulma as the planet explodes.

Trunks arrives, far more like Vegeta than we know him. Without a single teacher (though he did get training from people like Roshi and Korin), Trunks' only bond is with his mom. Without Gohan to hold his hand, Trunks is a hardass only relying on his own strength. He kills King Kold when the latter tracks Goku to Earth.

Goku trains with Piccolo during the three years, bringing him to the point we know him to be at during the Android saga. The fusion with Kami cements his personality change.

The Android saga proceeds as normal (since Gohan didn't do anything significant, AFAIK) up to the Time Chamber training. With three Saiyans wanting to train, they decide to train in alternating pair, Vegeta and Trunks, Trunks and Goku, then Goku and Vegeta. Vegeta and Trunks go in while Goku gets Dende to get new Dragonballs.

Vegeta and Trunks rocket off to fight Cell after their training, with predictable results. Beaten down, they agree to train with Goku, and all three exit the Chamber as Full Power Super Saiyans.

At the Cell Games, Cell doesn't make Cell Jr's. Instead, after Goku's last-ditch Warp Kamehameha, Cell decides to taunt the drained Goku (Vegeta and Trunks had already had their turns) by picking off his friends. Trunks dies first, and Vegeta explodes with rage into Super Saiyan 2.

Cell gets his ass whipped and activates his bomb. Without the Instant Transmission, Goku can't sacrifice himself. Vegeta thus uses his SSJ2 speed and endurance to carry Cell out into space. Caught in the explosion, Vegeta dies. Cell's core does not survive the explosion.

Krillin saves #18, Trunks is revived and returns to the future surprised at his father's reaction, Goku finally goes home for a few months before having to sleep outside after asking why ChiChi was getting so fat.

Years later, Vegeta gets his day back on Earth, having waited for Goku to achieve SSJ2 so they can have another fight. Without Gohan, the Kai's plan to uncover Buu's resting place happens when Goku and Vegeta face each other in the World Tournament. Their energy gets stolen, they track down Babidi's spaceship, but without Majin Vegeta, Buu is either not released or released at less than full strength.

If he's released at all, Buu immediately faces the Super Saiyan 2s. With their first exposure to Saiyan/Human hybrids being Trunks (a decent, but not ZOMGWAGE fighter) and Goku never learning the fusion dance and Goten and Trunks not even ten years old yet, neither has the inclination to leave Buu for the next generation to handle.

Still, Buu's regeneration and gradual unlocking of his power as he gets angrier overcomes the Saiyans' power advantage at the start. Goku considers self-destructing to stop Buu until the Kai chimes in with the knowledge of the Z Sword.

Goku goes with the Kai (Vegeta won't be able to leave the afterlife if he goes) while Vegeta leads Buu in a cat-and-mouse game to buy time. Buu kills Babidi when the latter demands Buu stop what Buu considers to be a fun game.

Goku easily pulls up the sword and masters it quickly, having not slacked on his weight training like Gohan did. Skeptical of a blade being able to defeat Buu, Goku tests it, breaking it and releasing Old Kai.

Goku turns down the Mystic powerup, knowing Vegeta is running out of time to be on Earth and that there's nothing stopping Buu once Vegeta's gone. Old Kai offers the fusion earrings instead, Goku takes tham back to Earth, and Vegetto is born.

Without Gotenks, Buu never had a reason to absorb the kids or Piccolo. Vegetto thus has no reason to hold back and obliterates Buu. Never being absorbed, Vegetto doesn't break up. Uub never comes into being, but the 'ten years later' segment shows Vegetto being a harder taskmaster than the seperate Saiyans were, preparing Goten and Trunks to be the heroes of Earth once Vegetto's gone.

I love all the alterations to Vegeta in this version.

Who could arrest Piccolo anyway? He already took over the world once, so no police or military would be stupid enough to get near him, and with Gokuu dead, he was easily the strongest person on the planet. Plus, he now knows how to counter Mafuuba, so there's little chance of ending up in a rice cooker prison either.
