Custom Covers Project

Post by DaemonCorps » Fri Mar 28, 2008 3:08 pm

I figured I'd try and "resurrect" SelMod's old thread about making custom covers for the new Orange Brick Widescreen sets, since I really liked how the first one came out.

For those not in the know, here was a mock version of the first set's cover art:

... as well as what SelMod had so far for the second set:

I wish to try my hand at making these custom covers. SelMod sent me the Photoshop template for the cover a while back, but I haven't really given it any attention until now.

As was mentioned in that old thread, "If anyone who's interested in these projects has a nice, high-res image of Zarbon in the Toei offical artwork style (ie, a DVD cover or video game art or something rather than a screencap), and would like to share it with me, I'd be much obliged." I tried my hand at just cutting out characters from screencaps, but the overall cover doesn't look as good (or crisp).

Some screen caps for the back of the set would be much appreciated, too.

Wow, those are sweet! I'd really like to use those...too bad I have no printer or anything.

Yeah, they look great. They have the right balance of characters, not too much Goku. It makes sense that if other characters are the centre of the current story arc, that they feature prominently on the dvd covers.

Nice, but didn't selmod finish project #1? I think he has one without the flipped images.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Yep, that one's already been finished. I was just throwing that up there as an example of what's already been done.

The problem is that it's the only cover that's been done so far out of the four (it's four, right?) season sets currently out now.

Also, I recall pictures of it being applied and ending up just a little short. Is anyone going to fix it?

I wish these had been the official covers to the boxsets. This is the kind of nicely done product you can come out with when you put effort into a cover.

*Laments at Funi's crazy orange covers, but hopes this project will come out with alternatives to future boxes*.
On hiatus.

I'm partial to just using Kanzenban covers.

I don't quite get what you're referring to.

Here's the final version of season one's cover (warning: it's a pretty big picture). If you're referring to how the cover didn't completely cover up FUNi's because it's a slip case, that still hasn't been fixed.

If you're referring to how the cover was slightly too short to cover at least the three sides of the slip case, I've fixed that for what will eventually be the season two case. I'm pretty sure the season one case is still a bit short, though.

... but if you're referring to the pictures on the back of the cover initially being flipped because they weren't long enough, then yeah, I fixed that.

Would anyone mind if I did that? Looking at the Budoukai pictures on MFG, most of the pictures seem to be kinda "mug shot" looking, with the character just staring straight ahead at the "camera." The kanzenban pictures are at least more varied than that...

All the kanzenban covers look nice, anyone can easily get nice high-res scans of them, there's enough to cover as many DVD cases as you need (would you need more than 36?). The only thing about them I could think might want to be changed is taking the volume numbers off, which would be dead easy.

Yes, DaemonCorps, that is what I meant. All three of your points. This is gonna be great! If I ever get an Orange Brick, than I'll be using these.

I've made some custom covers for the movies. I put them in 4-way DVD cases (same size as a regular case). 1-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-13. I can put the photoshop templates up if anyone wants them, although the last two need finishing. I added up the total time for each 'set' and put the correct year/s on the back.

Heh, sounds like a pretty big "if."

Kanzentai has a pretty good collection of the kanzenban images, with the option of either the poster or cover version of the volumes. In term of possible characters to be put up for season two's cover, there's two shots of stage 1 Freeza, Dr. Brief (though he's in black and white, so I probably won't use him), Grand Elder, Kuririn, Dodoria, the Ginyu Force, Dende, and Ginyu in frog form.

There's room for about four or so characters on the front and one small shot of a character on the back corner of the cover, so gimme your guys' input on who should be where.

To quote Borat, SEXY TIME!

Those covers are very sexy and slick. I certainly would not mind at all using these as slip covers. I hope this project continues!

Image

Hope that helps... I been working on an dvd cover but not shure if they are the right dimensions, pixel wise.... Does anyone know if they make 6 disc DVD cases, but also allows space for the booklet/insert.

Yes they do, but you'd have to cover one of the discs with the booklet.

For anyone who'd like to know, the spine on these cases are 1 1/16". The other dimensions are the same as any other DVD case.

I have been working on some covers for my own Dragonbox project but if anyone likes what i have started I can change it around for the orange bricks.

Please note that this is just a draft.

PRESENTING THE BLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUE BRICK!
Image

Yeah I used the Dragon Ball Online logo, and some of the picture quality differs and looks like shit, also the font for "SEASON ONE" is different to the actual one.
I'm gonna do the spines and back too later, only more jokey maybe...

The reason I went with blue is because I thought it would have to look consistent with the other covered, so the only thing I could find myself changing was the colour. Also when I imagined Season 2 of DBZ coming out I saw it as a Green box with Piccolo or Nail instead of Goku, like the Season 1 box was originally Yellow, different colours work well I think.
