Is there a difference between Spirit Bomb energy and ki?
Is there a difference between Spirit Bomb energy and ki?
Whenever creating a Spirit Bomb, I always thought Goku used 'life energy', some headcanon-separate type of energy more powerful than ki. Now that I think about it, is there a difference? Is a Spirit Bomb powered by a different type of energy, or is it just a massive ball of regular ki?

It's 'genki', which is different... somehow.
Cool stuff that I upload here because Youtube will copyright claim it: https://vimeo.com/user60967147

IIRC, they've also referred to Genki as "Ki", "power", and "energy" on occasion so its probably all the same thing. The only real difference between it all that I can see is how Genki is collected and what shape it can take but other than that, Genki is pretty much just Ki.

Short answer: no. But it isn’t that simple either.
Energy (genki) is an example of ki, which features a non-exhaustive list of spiritual aspects of life, such as bravery (youki) or one’s right mind (shouki).
By the way, DB has introduced ways to measure genki, but not other kinds of ki, as far as I can tell. So, anytime the word ki is used to indicate energy/vitality/power, it’s probably referring to its genki aspect.
I recommend reading this thread to in-depth info.

Genki, Shuki and Yuki are the three component parts of Ki. IIRC.
We don't know what ratio they are in, or if you can access all of it at once or anything specific.
The Genki dama just uses Genki.
This explains why the spirit bomb didn't wreck Buu despite having Gohans Energy in it.
Gohan is far far stronger than SS3 Goku who was about even with Buu yet he was able to resist the ball. Goku was able to push it back, but he shouldn't be able to do that without SS3 if it was just a tug of war type situation.
All Genki is Ki, not all Ki is Genki.

I think you misunderstood the point. It’s not that an individual’s ki is divided between those three aspects. It’s just that each kind of ki represents a different spiritual state, which obviously isn’t only energy, courage or soberness.

Genki is an aspect of ki. It's vigor energy. Genki in Japanese can loosely be translated to "vigor".
I think Tri-Beam also draws from genki.
