Good Voice Acting

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Actually, there's been at least five threads on this exact same topic in the past. It's pretty common to see people praise specific English voice actors on this board.

From the Funimation dub, I like Kami and Mister Popo's voices, to the point of almost prefering them over the original Japanese voices. I also like young Goku's voice and the tournament announcer's voice.

Having seen most of both, I'd say that both the Ocean and the FUNi dub have their good and bad points.

Personally, I've always looked at one of the points of making a dub, isn't just to be faithful to the original, but also pay a lot of focus on the target audience. And for this, I think FUNi did better than Ocean. A lot of the voices fit more. Kids in the 90s did and still do now enjoy rock more than very eastern orchestration. They are more grabbed by obvious intensity rather than subtlety.

Whereas with Ocean, I would say that they lost a bit of this. Some voices were just incredibly off (Trunks especially) and just did not fit with either the setting, or the choices, making the cast a little too eclectic and inconsistent.

But, however, I would also say that though FUNi had more fitting voices, Ocean had better actors. Maybe it's just the direction, but so much more emotion was conveyed in the Ocean Dub, so long as you got past the cooky and quite frankly bizarre music.

The fighting was a lot better with Ocean. Here being a great example; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sK_rTDcyjHk The fight is just a lot more enjoyable without the intense grunting.

So yeah, I'm pretty much with everyone else on my choices, though I'd like to give specific attention to Stephanie Nadolny. Her work, especially as young Goku in Dragonball was superb and though a little grunty, created a really, really nice Goku.

The Ocean dub really went downhill during the Cell stuff.

But I'm kinda partial to it because of Brian Drummond's Vegeta, I just tune out the other voices :P

I've never heard their Frieza stuff (Anyone know if it's possible to buy Ocean Dub DVDs?) but their Trunks and early Android saga was pretty bad. I thought the Cell saga was actually a little better.

And then personally, I thought that the Ocean Dub was generally better than FUNi for the Buu arc to the end. Well, if you ignore their awful version of Vegeta saying goodbye to his son...

They did the first half of it before the show was initially canceled. And since the second half is really just the Freeza fight, they basically had everyone cast.

For my answer- McNeil all the way. For FUNi, I like 17 and 18, which seems to be the norm. Also Dabura. And I saw Tenshinhan in a new light after realizing his VA was also Kurama on YYH. Chris Sabat CAN do a good Yamcha, but doesn't do so consistently for some reason. Ted Cole was an awesome Yamcha in the early days, but in the Cell and after Ocean dub he just seemed to stop caring about the part.

Peter Kelamis is both my least favorite Goku and my favorite Goku (in movie 2). It goes to show what a difference good direction makes.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Amen, Oni. Mr. Kelamis did terrible for the brief time he was on the show, but in Movie 2, his voice was perfect. Not to mention he's literally the only actor who pronounced Kaio Ken right.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
His work on the Ocean Dub was pretty damn good, surprisingly. I remember at first not liking him at all when we suddenly switched from FUNi's Trunks Saga to Ocean Group's Androids, but he really pulled off a great goofy Goku; his delivery on comedy lines were hilarious, and a pretty hardcore stand off-ish badass Goku. What he had trouble with were the fighting, that's where Sean Schemmel surpassed him in making a much stronger "warrior" like Goku.

True. You should see him on cartoon called "Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy". He plays a crazy foreign kid and is hilarious.

Well, technically, Vegeta pronounced it correctly one time in the redub....but it was later changed back to the incorrect pronunciation :? (for consistency, I guess....because Funimation is so concerned about being consistent).
