Good Voice Acting

Post by Zuhalter2000 » Thu May 01, 2008 7:36 pm

You hear a lot of voice acting bashing but only a little bit of good. Do you specifically like any of the voice acting? Personally, I think they did a great jo with 17's voice (Funi Dub). I dont know how he sounds in the Ocean Dub but the Funi Dub is perfect for him.

I loved Scott Mcneil's Piccolo, and though the horrible Perfect Cell theme almost drowned him out, Daemon Clarke's Perfect Cell I thought was pretty good.

I'm sure there are others, but I can't remember.

It might just be me, but I seem to like Justin Cook's take on Super Buu. He's kept Super Buu as pissed off and insane, as he was in the Japanese Version.

I actually don't care for him, he just reeked of generic bad guy to me, to much "Bwahahaha!, I am E-viil!" in his voice for my taste.

But that might have something to do with the character himself, In the Japanese version, his voice was simply.."there" for me, probably because I enjoyed Freeza and Cell's voices so much and set too high a standard.

Though they're very different characterizations of the characters, I enjoyed Brian Drummond's Vegeta and McNeil's Piccolo.

Drummond gave Vegeta a crazy edge that was quite interesting, and while McNeil's Piccolo was the generic deep voiced anti-hero he didn't descend into ridiculously deep and raspy. And they both portrayed emotion well.

How did I manage to forget my favorite dub voice.

Scott McNeil, Brian Drummond and Ian Corlette are my absolute favorite English language VAs.

Scott- Seriously people, do I even need to go into why? He's Scott. I loved everything about his performance, and a part of my love for Pic comes from that voice. I loved the way he shouted, how he showed emotion even with Pic still so caught up in trying very hard not to get mixed up in that kind of thing. I love that growl in his tone, I love... everything about it.

Brian- Like desirecampbell said, the little guy was just nuts. There was a barely controlled edge to him that made you wonder what the hell he was going to do next, if he was gonna just snap, hell knows what. This worked really well for early Veg and I was disappointed not to get to see how he would have adapted it as the char aged.

Ian? I don’t even know to explain it. I’ve just always loved the first two Gokus (Peter Kleamins just didn’t get to do enough unfortunately). Ian's was just lighthearted and laid back, it really suited him. Later voices always felt like they were trying too hard to make him uber-tough when he just isn't like that.

Non-Ocean I liked 17 and 18. They let the two of them stay casual in tone and laid back, which fit with the characters nicely.

Have to say I preferred Mr. Sabat's Popo to the Japanese voice. He sounded smarter in English.

Mr. Satan's dub voice is awesome. The actor gets both the pompous and the cowardly side of the character down well.

Of all the Ocean voice actors I like Brian Drummond, Scott McNeill, Lalainia Lindbjerg (Bulma) and, my favorite, Saffron Henderson. For Funimation I like Sean Schemmel, Laura Bailey, Kara Edwards, Eric Vale and Chuck Huber. Those are all the best VA's in their respective roles IMO, and if I could just mix and match I'd be the happiest fanboy ever lol.

Here we go. I'll give you three guesses to figure out which characters I'm gonna say, and the first three don't count.

Does that make sense at all? Oh well. Who cares, right?

Anyways, it's obvious I'm going to say Gohan (Kyle Hebert) and Videl (Kara Edwards), in the Funi dub. It's hard to imagine anyone else voicing those two. In fact, when they did Videl's voice with a different actress for Super DBZ, (The voice of Bulla, who's name escapes me right now.) likely due to Kara's schedule at the time, I almost had a fit. The voice just didn't fit Videl at all. The same thing goes for when they switched Vi's voice for the final episodes of DBZ, and for GT. Absolutely uncool, yo.

Other characters that Funi got right? Well, Adult Trunks (Eric Vale) was pretty awesome, if you ask me. Krillin's voice (Sonny Strait) was pretty good as well.

I heard Kara Edwards was getting married at the time Super DBZ was being recorded.

I figured something like that was going down. Still, they could've held off on recording until she was available. Bad move on Funi's part, especially with a rabid Videl fan such as myself.

Chuck Huber was a really good #17, actually preferred him to the original. Eric Vale did an impressive Future Trunks and good ole' Sonny Straight gave us an awesome Krillin and surprisingly a badass Bardock.

I agree with ya there. Sonny was mondo incredible as Krillin. That's another character I can't imagine being voiced by someone else.

And Eric was great as Adult Trunks, more-so as Future Trunks, if you ask me. A perfect job.

Maybe I'm wrong, but you sound like you've never seen the post-Freeza saga Ocean dub. If not, you look it up on youtube. Theres clips of Drummonds Vegeta in the Cell and Buu sagas all over the place.

Sometimes that happens. Kind of how they had to recast English Sailor Moon for S and Super S because her VA was pregnant with twins at the time, and something similar in Japan for the shows with Ikue Otani except Pokemon.

Eric Vale is an excellent Mirai Trunks, despite initially dropping the ball, but to be more fastidious, that may be due to FUNimation's cringe-inducing scriptwriting.

Chuck Huber is a great #17.

Andrew Chandler is a very good Coola.

Ian Corlett is an awesome Goku in that he merges the youthful tones of the Seiyuu and the coarse tones of Schemmel. He is all one could ask of a English Goku interpretation that qualifies for "spot on".

Scott McNeil is a great Piccolo, giving him the merciless edge that is needed, but would do well with a twinge less raspy voice.

Brian Drummond is great with his vigorous, fiery tones and high pitches. He captures the young Vegeta well.

Saffron Henderson worked well with Gohan, capturing the younger, child like tones with enough feminine tone to take over as the younger Gohan.

Kyle Hebert was an awesome Adult Gohan.

Dameon Clarke was very good for Incomplete Cell's first stage in that he had a sinister appeal in his voice, while not sounding like Freeza, which is what I felt the glaring error of the original Seiyuu was (just in interpretation; I liked the performance itself a lot). He's also very good for Complete Cell.

Schemmel creates his own character with Goku, but the way he adds emotion to the lines is amiable. He's especially great when his tone is emotional.

The rest of the English voice actors aren't necessarily bad, but have their moments of lapsing. The extras usually aren't great because they add too much of a strain to their voices, which doesn't work well.

There's something to like about both primary English casts (Ocean Group and FUNi).... and a lot of my thoughts about Ocean Group have turned around after seeing more recent stuff they've done like Death Note and Black Lagoon.

I like Scott McNeil's Piccolo - it's very fun and low and sends shivers up and down my spine. Chris Sabat is fine as Piccolo too, but you can tell in the early episodes (past 67, anyway) that he was trying to voicematch Scott McNeil. It's not so much an insult, as many people here might have you to believe, as it is a kind honoring of the original Piccolo.

Overall, though, I've enjoyed the FUNi English dub over the Ocean dub; perhaps that's just more of "I heard the FUNi cast first" just as many people here heard the Ocean Group cast first.

Hands down, though, Ryusei Nakao can deliver the perfect Freeza voice. I was never too fond of any of the English voices. And it will be so cool to meet Ryusei Nakao (and Takeshi Kusao again) at Animazement next weekend... :)
