Does anyone have a complete list of the dub errors.
I wanted to know if anyone has a list of every mispronounciation, name change, and error in the dub? Or if they didn't use a name at all, replacing it with a "ha!".
Example would be: Kaioken being mispronounced as Kay-oh-ken.

Well I mean like attack names and character names, basically everything that is different in those peticular catagories.

I'd say that the only way you could a complete, complete list is to transcribe the entire dub into MS word because most of it is inaccurate anyway.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

Since when did that stop people from bitching?Super Sonic wrote:DB/DBZ doesn't really have major name changes, and majority of them are really close to the original name or just tweaked a little.
People still throw shit fits over Zoro to Zolo, Ace to Trace and Smoker to Chaser.

I'm still not sure why "Pikkon" is so much worse than Pikkon.Super Sonic wrote:To be honest though, outside of minor characters not many people care about like Bardock's crew, DB/DBZ doesn't really have major name changes, and majority of them are really close to the original name or just tweaked a little.

Those are different and actual name changes, particularly with the latter two. Ti-en Shinhan and Tenshinhan are close enough for a lot of folks.NeptuneKai wrote:Since when did that stop people from bitching?Super Sonic wrote:DB/DBZ doesn't really have major name changes, and majority of them are really close to the original name or just tweaked a little.

Well, "Pikkon" should be pronounced, "Peek-kon" rather than "Pike-kon" like how Funi likes to pronounce it. But if you said everything the why it looks, which is how it's supposed to be, Funi's dub would be more F'd up in the names department with some of the things they have. More of them would be right though like "Sci-Yan" rather than "Say-yun".Rocketman wrote:I'm still not sure why "Pikkon" is so much worse than Paikuhan.
So something like Burdock to Bardock isn't a name change but Zoro to Zolo is? You'd have some explaining to do if you agree with that.Super Sonic wrote:Those are different and actual name changes, particularly with the latter two. Well, wouldn't it still be "Say-yon" if you pronounced the "Sai" the same as in "Pain"? "A" followed by "I" makes a long "A" sound. As for "Pikkon", wouldn't that be "Pick-con" instead of "Pike-kon".Vekurotto wrote:Well, "Pikkon" should be pronounced, "Peek-kon" rather than "Pike-kon" like how Funi likes to pronounce it. I think that a lot of the pronounciation problem come up because of the differences between pronouncing English words and Japanese words.

Sounds the same to me, only no echo effect, and heard someone say something about certain syllables being stressed differently.sangofe wrote:Can't believe anyone hasn't mentioned "KA MAY HA MAY HA!"
Also, why is it people make a fuss over English-speaking actors mispronouncing Japanese names, but no one cares when Japanese actors mispronounce English names?

When the dub says it as a word in a regular bit of dialogue (rather than as an attack with each syllable spoke aloud separately), it's spoken as "Kamayamaya" (somewhat like "ka MAya MAya")... which is incorrect. There's simply no getting around that.Super Sonic wrote:Sounds the same to me, only no echo effect, and heard someone say something about certain syllables being stressed differently.
I totally had an audio file already recorded explaining the whole thing, but I can't seem to find it either on my server or on this computer
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but while the spoken English language natively contains most of the syllables/sounds necessary to properly speak aloud Japanese (with some minor stretches... things like tsu), the same is not true for Japanese.Super Sonic wrote:Also, why is it people make a fuss over English-speaking actors mispronouncing Japanese names, but no one cares when Japanese actors mispronounce English names?
That's a very gross over-generalization, but I think it can be understood what I'm getting at.

Yeah it's pretty true. C/K, L/R, and B/V will always be prepetually hard words for the Japanese to pronounce because they don't have all of the syllables/sounds necessary to make the sounds but in English we do and it's pretty shotty for them to mess up.VegettoEX wrote:Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but while the spoken English language natively contains most of the syllables/sounds necessary to properly speak aloud Japanese (with some minor stretches... things like tsu), the same is not true for Japanese.

And Kuririn to Krillin isn't a big name change either. In the Japanese version of the show, it's pronounced as Kur-Lil-In, so it's easy to interperet it as Krillin.

They're both legitimate transliterations of the names, but in Zoro/Zolo's case, people were more pissed off because 4Kids's dub caused VIZ to change their name spelling to the "l" version.Vekurotto wrote:So something like Burdock to Bardock isn't a name change but Zoro to Zolo is? I personally never saw the big deal with Zolo anyway (not to mention the fact that most people complaining about the "name change" pronounce Zoro exactly like "Zorro.").

Another thing with Zoro is that in the original manga his named is written out with an 'r' on his bounty poster, so most people see that as Oda's intended spelling.Chibi Mystic Gohan wrote:I personally never saw the big deal with Zolo anyway (not to mention the fact that most people complaining about the "name change" pronounce Zoro exactly like "Zorro.").

Well Hermes, you can't really go by how the manga artist writes the name. If that were the case, Goku could be spelt G-o-k-o-u, G-o-k-u-h, and G-o-k-u-u because I've seen Toriyama-san use those different spellings. He's also spelt Kuririn as K-u-l-i-l-i-n.
I personally like to spell Goku as G-o-k-o-u. Toriyama-san has done it once or twice and Bandai chose to spell it this way for many years. And really, is it incorrect? The "lou" part of the name Marilou is pronounced the same way "kou" is on G-o-k-o-u. I just think it looks better and matches the 5 letter spelling of the other Son males, Gohan and Goten.
