Indeed. The fact is that we want uncut Dragonball manga. We are willing to pay good money for it, so why is Viz pissing off paying customers with this nonsense? The fact that they have other manga that's uncut on the market makes these edits look silly.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

You guys are cracking me up with the use of "bonk." Google "bonk" and see what it's British slang for.

More on topic, I still can't decide whether or not to go for these editions. seems like the original intentions are still there, but the perverse humor was my favorite part of early DB. I'll wait it out and see what the next releases hold I guess.

Viz re-releasing the Tankobons in Box Sets and Hardcover Editions of the Dragon Ball Manga.
Viz is also re-releasing the complete runs of three manga titles (and most of one ongoing title) in box sets. August's Naruto box set will have the same first 27 volumes of the Naurto manga that was in last year's Shadow Box Set, but without the wooden box. The 21 volumes of Bleach will follow in September, and then the 13 volumes of Death Note (12 regular volumes plus the How To Read endcap volume) in October, and finally the Dragon Ball manga in two box sets in November. The Dragon Ball manga will be split between the first 16-volume box and the 26-volume Dragon Ball Z box.

In addition to the box sets, Viz is releasing hardcover collector's editions of its most popular Shonen Jump titles with better paper and new cover illustrations. The first Bleach volume will ship in August, and then Death Note, Naruto, and Yu-Gi-Oh! in September, and finally Dragon Ball and the Dragon Ball Z arc in October.
If the hardcover versions are anything like the Tankobons I have or even better in terms of editing or dialogue, I might check them out.

Just got my Dragonball Vizbig today.

I have only flipped through it, the paper quality was definitely an improvement, however the grayscaled colour pages look like absolute crap this time around.

I'll only switch to the hardcover editions if they are unedited.

I buyed 2 copies of tankoubon and I only liked the cover. The size, paper quality, quality weren't really good.

So I'm also buying the VIZBIG edition and see if they are any better, but I won't continue buying them.

I will keep hoping for a uncut release. There will be a day we will get a uncut release. There has to be.

Could the hardcover editions finally be some real version of the Kanzenban from Viz? The pagecount doesn't quite match up, so the chapter counts could be those of the tanks, but...

Hm. I was wondering if I was going to get the VIZBIG versions or not, but I'll probably skip out on them if there are hardcover editions coming.

No, the hardcovers are for tankoubon.

Also guys what version/release of the manga is the best now? The SJ magazines? The tankoubon? VIZBIG? Oh and btw I'm talking about English versions only.

I was in a Barnes and Noble just a few days ago, and no sign of the Viz Big editions. I wonder why?

Eh, I didn't exactly mean that they could be straight adaptations of the Kanzenban, I meant they could be Viz's version of an optimal release. Different page count (same chapters as the tanks, but with bonus stuff or galleries), but better printed, hardback covers (obviously), fully intact color sections, and maybe even unedited.

Perhaps I'm just being overly optimistic.

Well... I'd say it'd still be the VizBig in overall quality. Better paper, bigger format, more content for the price, and SOME color chapters. I'll probably go with those (might still pick up DB #1 anway) if the Collector's Editions don't turn out any better. If you're super-concerned with editing, the completed, regular tankobons are probably a better choice. They're gonna be putting out those entire boxes of them sometime soon.

Assuming that you're referring to the English release of DBZ vol. 1... Didn't it get a chapter or two ripped out and placed onto the end of DB vol. 16 (for the sake of consistency with the Anime)? Isn't it possible that Viz is just releasing these with correct chaptering this time around, and thats where the extra 30 pages comes from?

Of course, I don't have vol. 16 in front of me at the moment, so I could just be totally incorrect on the number of extra pages. And this is all just wild conjecture on my part to begin with.

If he did mean the English releases, then that's... an interesting idea. I don't see any reason why Viz would do that, though, nor do I know just how many total pages those extra chapters consisted of.

I would like to say in the shower scene they edited out Bulma's boobs and ass. But they kept her ass when she flashed Master Roshi, so that doesn't make any sense. Damn it! Now I have to burn these books and go back to the original ones, right hardcore fans?

To be fair, I don't see any reason for a lot of the stuff that Viz has done with Dragon Ball. ^^;

Oh, and I forgot to mention, the English release of DBZ vol. 1 does indeed have 147 pages, so if someone who actually owns vol. 16 of DB can confirm how many pages those two chapters actually comprise, I would much appreciate it.

Haha... Summer boredom has reduced me to being excited by page numbering.

Those two chapters are 28 pages total, 30 pages counting the title pages. A standard tankoubon has about 180 pages, counting the title page gallery.

*sigh*. This is all very dissapointing. I was looking forward to these "Big" releases so I could finally start buying the DBZ books, but it looks like I'm staying with just volumes 1-16 (Dragonball) for a while longer. I guess I'll cross my fingers and hope the hardcovers are more like what we all hoped for from the "Big" releases.

I was referring to the English books, however I do not own volume 16. That is an interesting point you bring up about the rearranged chapters, it brings back hope that this is an English Kanzenban release. :D

Thanks!

So... If you add those 30 pages to the 147 of DBZ vol. 1, you get 177, which is really, really close to the 176 pages that are allegedly in the hardcover edition.

Looks like Viz might be correcting the one edit that I've never actually seen anyone care about. I'm not sure how to feel about this.

I'm more actually a bit more angry the fact VIZ didn't make the Goku and Vegeta fight color. It's still in black and white, infact a lot of the pages are black and white. Most pages in the beginning are color though. But it's like they have assed it.

This is exactly what I was getting ready to ask. What/where/when were things released in color?

I thought I was going to be getting this, but instead its just B & W:

Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.
DB DBox color corrections & DBox color corrections.
