So Krillin suddenly forgets their mission and prefers having their friends dead forever. He should have thought that there is still hope that later somehow they might get the Dragon Balls back again.

No there was no hope, he can sense ki, there was no way they were winning that battle. They didn't know how Goku would arrive in time and didn't think he would get that strong.

They couldn't revive their friends they could only prevent a space tyrant becoming immortal.

Exactly. Something to love about the Namek arc is the theme of the characters constantly being forced to compromise their goals. Kuririn and Gohan just want to revive their friends and start off the adventure filled with cautious optimism, but they get manipulated and browbeaten by Vegeta into letting him wish for immortality since it might give them a chance to defeat Freeza. They know that Vegeta is playing them and that he'll probably become as bad as Freeza if he wins, but Vegeta still holds enough power to blast them if they refuse. By the time the Ginyus arrive, the situation is so hopeless for all of them that they all become willing to shatter any chance of completing their own missions as long as Freeza doesn't achieve his. That progression is so amazingly handled.

Yeah, as tragic and meaningless the journey may have been rendered in its original objective, thwarting a dangerous tyrant like Freeza is the foremost goal and I imagine their dead friends would agree.

They felt Freeza. They knew if Freeza and his goons got a hold of the balls, it was over. They slaughter they witnessed of all the namekians was going to happen everywhere else. So, yes, they gave up on the hope to revive their friends and took measures to make sure these baddies could not use the balls to do even worse everywhere.

I agree with everyone. It was perfect how it played out. Each new situation they faced forced them to adapt to survive and thwart the evil Space Empire/Real Estate Sharks.

As opposed to Freeza getting the dragonballs, the Ginyu Force killing Krillin, Gohan, and Vegeta, and their friends staying dead anyway?
