How come Gohan and the others didn't learn Super Saiyan God?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

How come Gohan and the others didn't learn Super Saiyan God?

Post by funrush » Sun Sep 06, 2026 3:57 pm

I was thinking about Vegeta getting Super Saiyan God, how we never see that on screen. They had to get that combination of people back together to do the ceremony again for Vegeta. So from there I'm wondering, why didn't they repeat the ceremony 3 more times to give Gohan, Goten, and Trunks SSG as well?

Gohan I can picture him outright refusing it because retirement.

But Goten and Trunks I think they'd be like "me next!" lol. Maybe you have to be a certain level of strength before you can gain the form and they didn't meet the requirement? Or they didn't want to keep putting baby Pan through this over and over?

I imagine that it's purely a decision of Toriyama not wanting to give those characters new transformations because he didn't want to write stories with them. Heck, even for Super Hero, Toriyama had to be asked to include Gohan. I imagine that he was also asked to include a new transformation for Gohan, too, and he came up with Beast.

It really makes me wish that Nagamine and the others had asked Toriyama to let them give Gohan Super Saiyan God for the Tournament of Power. Vegeta winds up getting a new form and Goku gets two new forms, so tossing one to Gohan in an arc where he has, ostensibly, the best writing he's had since Namek would have been a good move.

Vegeeta learned SSG without the ritual. It's implied Whis taught him how to produce God ki, iirc.

Gohan apparently wanted to get stronger on his own, and Goten and Trunks are too inexperienced.

Goku in the anime says Vegeta didn't make the ritual, that he got SSJG by himself off-screen, which only leads us to believe that he awakened it through Whis training.

As for the others, I think it's pretty much what Julie said, Toriyama simply wasn't interested in working with those other characters anymore. We can see that based on how prior to Super Hero, he treated them.

Aside from Fukkatsu no F, he never specified how Gohan's power or transformations were supposed to work, which is what led to Toei and Toyotaro going in two different directions, with Toei following the route of him going though regular SSJ forms and later having to re-awaken Ultimate form. And Toyotaro went with him in Permanent Ultimate form as seen in the ToP and Moro arcs.

Goten and Trunks he was even less interested as they don't engage with the core of the stories at all, they're completely sidelined, note how they only get some spotlight in the anime, because it was Toei playing with ideas for filler.

The only other time Toriyama would work with another Saiyajin character in the forefront was in the Zamasu arc, where SSJ2 was the only new form he gave for Mirai Trunks, and it was off-screen. Then it took Super Hero for him to start working with the hybrids again (and it wasn't even his idea originally)

In-universe, I would say the characters themselves aren't interested. Goku and Vegeta are the only ones who got interested in learning, developing and devoting themselves to god powers. Toriyama had Goku trying to convince Whis to train him, then Vegeta discovers about it and follows right behind (Toei did this in the anime, but switched their roles)

Gohan says he wanted to evolve on his own, and we only see him training with Piccolo, also doing off-screen training alone to learn techniques such as makankosappo. And he gets a new transformation that can match MUI Goku, making the training with a master even more meaningless for him.

Then there are Goten and Trunks who don't even seem interested in training at all, we never saw them training with a master for example.

I think those hybrids are all about casual power only, they like getting stronger traditionally, it's what they rely on, Gohan especially in the latest saga which was Super Hero you'll see how the story emphasises him getting stronger by releasing his own power, which was always the thematic around the character.
All the complexity of "training with a master, spiritual domination, strong mind, beyond physical strength, etc" is a Goku thing, which Vegeta decided to follow after Battle of Gods, which is what led those two to going beyond conventional powers, touching different and higher realms. So I guess it's the thematic behind the characters.

I do think it's weird though how no one decided to perform the ritual ever again, and then there's Broly, who's simply naturally insanely strong.

In the anime Goten and Trunks did want to train with Vegeta, however Vegeta didn't want to train with them. Goten did want to train with Goku and Whis, but Chi Chi was against it.

Then in DBS manga Gohan did mention that Goten and Trunks are stronger now, then they mentioned that they have people to protect.

As for the other Saiyans, there was nothing stopping Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Future Trunks from doing the SSG Ritual. By doing the SSG Ritual, they would gain a taste and experience using God Ki and SSG form even if it is temporary. There is nothing stopping Universe 7 from teaching Universe 6 Saiyans teaching them the SSG Ritual.

I've always felt SSG and SSB should only be usable by pureblooded Saiyans. Toriyama and co never seriously intended to give those forms to Gohan, Goten, Trunks, etc so may as well make it impossible for hybrids to use them (granted, Future Trunks turned SSG in Heroes, but that was only because Toei wasn't sure what Trunks's hair color would be in SS4). A simple way of solving the "why doesn't anyone else turn SSG" dilemma.

But it does seem arbitrary, because SSG and SSB are simply the result of a Saiyan tapping into God Ki (SSB is literally just turning SS1 while using God Ki). Why should hybrids be unable to tap into God Ki? If hybrids can donate their energy for the ritual, that means they're counted as being Saiyans, which should also mean they can become SSG/SSB.

In GT they explained why Bebi Vegeta couldn't transform into SSJ4 and why Vegeta couldn't become SSJ4 in the past, even though he had perfect control of his Oozaru form.

As for why the other Saiyans didn't transform into their Oozaru, imagine Gohan, Trunks, Goten and Pan going out of control.

In DBS they wants us to pretend the SSG Ritual doesn't exist after BoG. They act like the other Saiyans can't learn God Ki.
