Wow Kaboom I guess you couldn't SEE what I was getting at two post ago. I guess I'm gonna have to spell it out for you. I understand that properties like The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, IronMan, and Batman never got word for word, panel for panel movie adaptations. I guess I was just naive and thought that Dragon Ball would be an exception to this. However I guess in the end I got "owned" by Hollywood. If it was any other movie I would be more than willing to give the actors a chance to prove themselves but since this is Dragon Ball I won't. I won't give the producers at FOX any credit for having enough sense to start with Dragon Ball as opposed to skipping straight to Z because that would make entirely too much sense. I've seen pictures of Justin Chatwin in a blue gi holding a staff and in almost every picture he is holding a 4 star Dragon Ball that has been given to him by his grandfather who is dead. Obviously the writers have read at least the first 5 chapters of the manga but I will choose to ignore this as it would be devastating to the argument that this movie will suck because it ignores the source material. (If you get what I'm DRIVING at Kaboom)

Chrono Trigger made a statement about his opinion on the movie. From the looks of it he didn't try to make anyone agree with him, or down anyone for their opinion. How come everyone feels the need to convert those who dislike what they've heard about the movie so far?

There's a difference between "this movie will be horrible" and "I don't think I'll like/see this movie" or "I think this movie will suck."

The first one is making a statement as if it were tell-the-future fact. The second one is an opinion. If you don't want what you say to be challenged, then it'd be prudent to choose your words carefully. Chrono didn't. He said the movie "is going to be awful in every way possible." That suggests an attitude of "this is fact."

Wow way to totally ignore what I just said. Seriously though why is it that every time someone says the slightest negative thing about this movie you, Xyex and Jappo feel the need to jump on them and cut them up ? Who made you guys the happy police ? If I feel like this movie is going to be terrible then that's my opinion. I'm not trying to force it down everyone's throat. Like you guys are...

Precisely. It's nothing personal; All I'm trying to say is that if you've got an opinion, make sure you state it as an opinion, not as solid fact. People can take it the wrong way. :)

What we know as "fact" is that the story and setting of the movie will be a little different than the original source material. What we don't know for a fact is that it will be a "horrible" movie.

The Spider-Man films deviate from the comic book canon a good deal, yet are still great movies by themselves (3 was a little disappointing, but it'd be hard to top the first two, I guess). DragonBall's being treated the same way. A few story tweaks and character roles switched around to make things work better for a 2-hour plot, a few little changes in visual design so things don't look ridiculous with real people... It's just what happens.

Doesn't mean it's going to be a "bad movie." There's been a lot of talk on this board lately about various modes and lines of "canon," such as considering the anime and manga and games and such each their own separate things... why does it seem so difficult to treat the movie the same way? It's different from the manga. It's the DragonBall "movieverse," so to say.

Honestly I don't think the movie is gonna be bad. I just came up with this amazing ass argument that would have changed everyone's pessimistic view of the movie into a positive one. I was just trying to steer the conversation in that direction but oh well. I wasn't trying to pick a fight anything though. So yeah defiantly no hard feelings.

The question is whether or not the charm of DB comes from its world and characters and writing. Is any of it's charm left over from the transition to live action?

I hope so. I'm more concerned about that than any tweaked details.

I think the movie will have some of the charm, but only if there is a little comedy left in the dialogue.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Meh. It wouldn't work on a forum like this. Maybe at SHH or Gamefaqs or the Dragon Ball movie boards. :?

Is it even possible to translate the little quirks and charm of the manga/anime to the live action screen?

Guys, this movie is going to suck. That's a goddamn promise. I'd love to be wrong here - but I won't be.

Stop getting all pissy about people being negative about the movie. Also, stop getting all pissy about people being hopeful about the movie. If you're going to discuss something at least back them up with some kind of point, or reasoning, or fact. Like: based on how most of the recent Hollywood superhero adaptation films have turned out, and the fact that almost all the information we have about the film so far are about weird pointless changes to the original story, and that FOX has pushed the film back to an Easter release (the vast majority of films released Easter weekend are sub-average, and the Easter weekend is seldom seen as a sign of confidence from the production house) - this movie will be badly done.

And hey, if you don't have a problem with a huge failure of a production being slung on the shoulders of the DB franchise, that is still being sucked under by incompetent management from FUNi, and the laughingstock that is English dub - then that's fine, just don't expect everyone to have such low standards.

Yes, it is definitely possible to do that. It won't happen in this film, though.

My standards are very high. I mean, you have to have a cohesive and logical plot, acting, it's all so terribly difficult.

I really wish I had some major news to post so that you guys could stop arguing over whether or not the movie is going to suck and whether or not your own opinions are right, but sadly all I don't...there is just another video of Jamie Chung at Comic-Con... :|

So do you think its going to suck in every aspect or is it just gonna be a terrible attempt at a Dragon Ball movie ? Elaborate.

He also thought The Dark Knight was bad, too. I'm sorry, Desire, but knowing that has shifted my perspective somewhat, and I'm afraid I can't take anything you say about the DB movie seriously anymore as a result.

Still looking forward to DragonBall. Think I'm gonna avoid this topic until the next major news though.
