Yeah, the person is reporting from Otakon 2008, so the error doesn't bother me.SSj_Rambo wrote:Even on their dual layered discs they cannot fit any more than 7 widescreen episodes on a disc without quality loss. They probably meant "the complete Black Star Dragonballs Saga", so as to emphasis that they are at least getting one complete saga in this set.

That's about the same as the original Dragonball-release, or their new One Piece-DVDs, which look just fine, except some issues that were on the japanese DVDs too. 7 episodes on one disc should be fine. So currently, this release is looking pretty good, though I won't go and actually buy it until someone else can confirm that the video isn't crap, and that they've got all the footage they're supposed to. (Meaning, the japanese openings, endings and eyecatchers have to be in there, or I won't buy it.)shotkeeper wrote:How can they put 36 epis on 5 disc. Makes 7 epis on every disc and one with 8.

No hints at a fullscreen just yet. We need more info from Funimation.shotkeeper wrote:Ok. So we have a hint that this is fullscreen, but what's up with 36 episodes. I really hope that's a typo. I would love 32 and another 32 and not 36 and 28.

What they should really do is 40 episodes on the first disc (the complete first two sagas) and 24 episodes on the second set (the complete last two sagas). I know it makes the numbers vary by quite a bit but at least they're not breaking up the sagas and releasing them in sets like they were supposed to be. But sadly it seems most likely that they will release the sets each with 32 episodes, like the trailer said...which means that at the end of season one they will be leaving us with a cliffhanger ending in the last few episodes of the Bebi Saga.shotkeeper wrote:Ok. The trailer on the Bardock/Trunks-BluRay is apparently encoded in 4:3, so yes, we do have hints that this might be in 4:3, unless they made the trailer first, then cropped it afterwards, which seems like a rather retarded thing to do... I mean, even more so than usual.Raki wrote:No hints at a fullscreen just yet. We need more info from Funimation.
It makes sense that Funi would release the trailer in 4:3, even if the actual episodes will be cropped because Funi knows that the biggest criticism they've received about the season sets is their being cropped; so they're probably just trying to make us think that they're in 4:3 so that we'll buy them...or at least stop bad-mouthing them so that others aren't turned away.Vegard Aune wrote:The trailer on the Bardock/Trunks-BluRay is apparently encoded in 4:3, so yes, we do have hints that this might be in 4:3, unless they made the trailer first, then cropped it afterwards, which seems like a rather retarded thing to do... The people buying these sets aren't online, so I doubt they would care about that.SSj_Rambo wrote:It makes sense that Funi would release the trailer in 4:3, even if the actual episodes will be cropped because Funi knows that the biggest criticism they've received about the season sets is their being cropped; so they're probably just trying to make us think that they're in 4:3 so that we'll buy them...or at least stop bad-mouthing them so that others aren't turned away.Vegard Aune wrote:The trailer on the Bardock/Trunks-BluRay is apparently encoded in 4:3, so yes, we do have hints that this might be in 4:3, unless they made the trailer first, then cropped it afterwards, which seems like a rather retarded thing to do... Maybe they'll throw in the GT Special in the second boxset to make up for it. Besides, its not like they've made sure the episode counts are even in the past. Aside from season 1 of Z, they always stopped at the end of what they call sagas. Season 2 ends on episode 74, the singles release of the "Captain Ginyu Saga" ended on episode 74. Season 3 starts on the first episode of the "Frieza Saga", and ends on episode 107, the last episode of said saga. Season 4 starts on episode 108, the first episode of the "Garlic Jr. Saga", and ends on episode 139, the last episode of the "Androids Saga". Season 5 starts on episode 140, the first episode of the "Imperfect Cell Saga", and ends on episode 165, the last episode of the "Perfect Cell Saga".shotkeeper wrote:Ok. The only problem is if FUNimation did what they've been doing with Z, GT Season 1 should either end on episode 39 or 40, not episode 36. 39 is the episode where Goku kills Baby, and episode 40 is the episode where the Earth blows up because of the black star dragon balls.
Episode 40 is officially where the Bebi Saga ends and that is where they should end season one. It's not like they would lose any quality with 40 episodes on six discs (widscreen or fullscreen), they just done want the total run time to differ that much between the two.Taku128 wrote:The only problem is if FUNimation did what they've been doing with Z, GT Season 1 should either end on episode 39 or 40, not episode 36. 39 is the episode where Goku kills Baby, and episode 40 is the episode where the Earth blows up because of the black star dragon balls.
I personally think that it would be better for business if they put 40 episodes on the first set (like they should) and 24 episodes on the second set, because then people would really want to buy the first set because 40 episodes for about 30$ is great and they would also want to buy the second set because it is the end and everyone likes to watch the end of a series. But the way they're doing it there is nothing in the first set that's not in the second set, so for most people they might as well just get the second set since it has half of the entire show and the end.

4:3 and 16:9 discs are still encoded to a 720x480 MPEG2 stream either way you look at it. The aspect ratio has no affect on the quality saved (or lost).SSj_Rambo wrote:Even on their dual layered discs they cannot fit any more than 7 widescreen episodes on a disc without quality loss. Thank you for pointing this out before I had a chance to post about it.ect5150 wrote:4:3 and 16:9 discs are still encoded to a 720x480 MPEG2 stream either way you look at it. SSj_Rambo, before you spout off, make sure you actually have some knowledge on your subject.

You do know that would be flat-out false advertising, right?SSj_Rambo wrote:It makes sense that Funi would release the trailer in 4:3, even if the actual episodes will be cropped because Funi knows that the biggest criticism they've received about the season sets is their being cropped; so they're probably just trying to make us think that they're in 4:3 so that we'll buy them...or at least stop bad-mouthing them so that others aren't turned away.

They don't so much as false advertise, as vague advertising.Raki wrote:Since when has Funi cared about that?Brad Redfield wrote:You do know that would be flat-out false advertising, right?SSj_Rambo wrote:It makes sense that Funi would release the trailer in 4:3, even if the actual episodes will be cropped because Funi knows that the biggest criticism they've received about the season sets is their being cropped; so they're probably just trying to make us think that they're in 4:3 so that we'll buy them...or at least stop bad-mouthing them so that others aren't turned away.

Past experience with FUNI has shown that Raki has a damn good point though...djkalteraphine wrote:They don't so much as false advertise, as vague advertising.Raki wrote:Since when has Funi cared about that?Brad Redfield wrote:You do know that would be flat-out false advertising, right?
I'd say "gaining more image as a result of widescreen" was false. It goes back to how you define "more" in the given situation... but I'll stick with the non-moron definition.
