Because there is no OVA?

If you're refering to the Playdia footage, there's no real point. It would also be more complicated to get the rights.

edit: And for the record, the word gattai is used in the manga to describe the results of the Fusion technique. I seem to recall Julian saying some stuff on the podcast way back when that implied that gattai was only used with the potara, but this isn't right.
Maybe it has reference to permanence in fusion, like Potara and Namekkian fusions.

Which again makes me wonder if Dodoria is a fused being.
I'm not quite sure what you mean. But just to clarify what I said, gattai is the Japanese word for "merge/fuse" that's used to describe both the Fusian dance and the Potara. For Namekian fusion, yuugou is used for Piccolo and Nail and sometimes Piccolo and Kami, while douka is also sometimes used for Piccolo and Kami. Fusion dance is also sometimes referred to as yuugou as well.

Ah, I misunderstood. I thought your edit meant that in this case it was a fusion technique called "Gattai Fusion." As opposed to "Fusion Dance" or "Potarra Fusion" or "Namekkian Fusion."

On a sort of related note...

"Yuugou" is used in Yuugiou: Duel Monsters to describe fusions caused by the magic card "yuugou" (Polymerization in the English dub). Whereas "gattai" is the command Kaiba uses to merge the pieces of XYZ Dragon Cannon (think Power Rangers robot-style).

But there is. It was released on VHS before the Playdia games were released. So, if an original animation sees its first release on home video, what exactly would you call it?

Semantics aside, why would the rights be more complicated? Were the distribution privileges actually sold to Bandai when the Playdia games came out? I would also argue that there's a very big point: FUNimation has run out of Dragon Ball! All three series, all 17 movies, and both TV Specials have been released on DVD at one point or another (and those out of print should see release within the next few years, mark my words). To come up with something new would be beneficial, especially once the Colored Bricks have run their course. And the only new things they CAN come up with are this new movie showing in a few days and... the OVA. That's it.

It's really both sad and satisfying, in a way. I never thought the day would come when the Dragon Ball franchise would be available in its entirety in America. That also means that there won't be much to look forward to, outside of games for systems I don't have  .
To a strong man, the end justifies the means. To a stronger man, the means justify the end.

Anyway herms, just out of curiosity, what do they use for the Cell and Buu absorptions, #13's assimilation and #17's merger? Do they use similar words to those you described? Do they use "translated" versions of the words I just used? Perhaps that might help understand a bit more about this new one...

Cell: generally it's kyuushuu, "absorb", but sometimes it's gattai (like when Cell first explains the whole thing to Piccolo). The android chart on chapter 367's title page use yuugou, while when 2nd-form Cell is trying to coax No.18 to be absorbed by pretending to be No.17, he uses ittaika (literally "become one body").

Buu: Like Cell, it's usually kyuushuu, but sometimes gattai is used, escpecially when Buu's absorbtions are compared to the fusions of the heroes. For instance, when Buu tells Vegetto it was dirty of him to merge (gattai), Vegetto shoots back with "you merged/gattai'd quite a bit yourself", and when Goku and Vegeta refuse to use the potara to fight Kid Buu, Goku rationalizes by saying that Buu "isn't merged/gattai'd anymore".

No.13: Always gattai. No phrase is used to describe this in the actual movie, but guidebooks, games and whatnot use use the term for his power-up. On Daizenshuu EX (there's a podcast too?), Mike and Julian translate gattai as "intergrate" in No.13's case, to make a pun on an intergrated circuit. Though to be nitpicky, the actual Japanese word for "intergrated circuit" doesn't use gattai, but some other more technical term I don't remember right now.

No.17: Yeah mean in GT, right? It's been a while since I've seen it, and I don't really want to check my DVDs, but looking it up on the Japanese Wikipedia page for the DB androids, they use gattai to refer to it, so I'll assume that's what they use in the series as well.

Ok, so basically what we have is that the word gattai is thrown around for every kind of fusion/merger/combined form. Although this doesn't help understand which of them this form is at least we know it can be any and not necessarily a fusion dance one, meaning it can be a whole new thing.

Why?, because knowing there's a new Dragonball animation, and I haven't seen it yet causes me physical pain.

My skin actually burns.

I know the feeling, I just hope funimation does get the rights FAST and cough up the cash.
I have a feeling lots of bootlegs will be zooming around the internet at break-neck speeds in any doubt - But I need this for my set!!!

The only thing I am worried about is the fact that perhaps this could just be another 'The plan to destroy the Saiyans.'

I really hope not :( I need this DVD release badly.

Please Funimation..... Please......

Well what Dragon Ball fan wouldn't it's a new animated special that Mr. Toriyama himself is directly involved with.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

If we're all here for a reason then I'm just visiting.

Now that this thing is ooming up, I'm wondering who's in a position to see it. Julian's in Japan now, and I'll be there soon (...9 days...), but who else is there, on this or any other English DragonBall forum? And more importantly, who has a ticket? Hujio has tried to use some of his friends in Japan to get me a ticket, but it might not work. Toyble (the DBAF fanmanga guy) said that it looks like adults won't get in. Personally, if I don't get a ticket, I'll try and sneak in or something. I wonder if you can get arrested for sneaking into a free show?...
Yeah this thing is coming up soon. I am wondering how long will it take people to air this thing on other functions [Youtube, shows etc]. If the first airing is on September 21st how long would it take someone to post the entire episode on Youtube?

A day.

Or a few hours (if they've got a laptop with wireless access with them while they're at the tour).

I'm hoping for as soon as possible. (Not that I won't buy this once Funi releases it on DVD, I do play to buy this special if/once they do. )

I'll end up doing the same thing, I'll download and watch it, then wait patiently for a dvd release.

Honestly, I'm praying that this movie doesn't get released on the internet by someone other than Toei. Even though I trust you guys when you say that you plan to buy any official release, I know that there are hundreds (if not thousands) of people for every one of you that will download the same video with no intentions of buying an official release.

As for the special itself, I'm really hoping that at some point Mr. Bird-Mountain himself will talk about how he felt about the special and how the production of it differed from the last Dragonball movie/episode that he worked on.

..Why would Toei release the special on the internet for free?, of course it's going to be bootleggers filming it and throwing it up on bittorrent, what do you expect?

I have like 90 something FUNimation DB/Z/GT dvds, so of course I'm going to buy it, the same people that wont be paying for this release, are the same people that haven't been paying for anything.
