I think you've got that backwards. It's everyone's "fan-goggles" being on that's preventing them from seeing this movie as any good.

Yeah well at least in the end they all ended up looking like they were supposed too. Take away the gi and the mention of the Dragon Balls and I wouldn't know it was a Dragon Ball movie. They didn't even show Shenlong or a Kamehameha. Even the first Spider-Man Trailer had him swinging away.

Wow.
Honestly? The car that appears for a second or so is a major concern?
It keeps appearing. I just thought it was funny.

"OK, guys, let's make the trailer! You know how we could get people to come and see the Dragon Ball movie? Let's show them there's a yellow car in it! And at one point? It parks!"

Opening day, indeed! Can't wait!

Like this first DragonBall trailer shows Goku fighting Piccolo?

Well, the movie might still suck even without the fan goggles. After seeing The Invisible, I can affirmatively state that Chatwin is a terrible actor. God, I hope it was just the director or something. =\

Yeah, but I think that's rather petty. It's not as if the existence of the film (or any future films) is hurting him.

Hell, I even paid for "Bio-Broly" just to see if it was really that terrible (god, it was...).

Don't draw the conclusion that the people with the ''fan goggles'' who are going to watch this movie are expecting this movie to be good.
It is because we are dedicated fans (not per se saying that you're not a dedicated fan) that we are able to watch a movie adaptation of our favorite anime show and give our criticism about it afterwards.

If they ended it with a Kamehameha it would have been that much better. It's like having the Human Torch "flame on" or having The Thing say "It's clobbering time" or having Superman fly of into Outer Space.

I totally agree with this… except that I didn’t really get that Dragon Ball vibe from this trailer at all.

In fact, I’m not even looking at this as a Dragon Ball adaptation… I’m looking at this as just another action flick. And going by the trailer, it doesn’t look interesting at all. Not in the least. This looks completely generic, and without trying to sound like an ass, anyone who doesn’t think so I can only assume is someone who hasn’t seen a particularly great deal of martial arts or action movies in their life.

It doesn’t look especially BAD or anything (again, just as far as action flicks go)… just completely uninteresting and without any sense of distinctiveness whatsoever. If I didn’t know what Dragon Ball was, this wouldn’t be sparking any interest in me to go and find out. In fact, even though I AM a lifelong Dragon Ball fan I still have no great, burning desire to see this thing now going off that trailer.

Again like I said earlier… a trailer’s purpose is to incite interest and intrigue. And this one simply didn’t do that for me at all. In fact, it had the exact OPPOSITE effect on me and completely let the air out of any curiosity I had to see how this would turn out. It looks like it DESPERATELY wants to be something vaguely Storm Riders-esque, but placed in a modern/quasi-futuristic setting. And I already have Storm Riders on DVD, and this doesn’t present me with any indication that its gonna exactly blow that movie out of the water.

I’m still probably gonna go see it… but only now because I have a few friends who are convinced that this is gonna be another Double Dragon/Street Fighter, and are dead set on going to make fun of it. I’m still plenty open of course to future trailers changing my mind and getting me more enthused, but if they don’t, and for some reason my friends wind up not going… I may in fact just not even bother.

Who knows, maybe this will still be alright… perhaps even good… but I’m definitely not getting any sort of vibe from the preview beyond a nagging sense of “been there, done that, seen this already, but seen it done a thousand times better.”

And as for how it appears to be stacking up as a Dragon Ball adaptation... whoever it was that made the Dragon Power comparison a few pages back; spot on dude.

Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

I'd say the repeated success of bad movies kinda hurt my movie-going experience in the long run.

I just fear that if this movie sucks, every non-fan who wanted to see what's this "Dragon Ball" all about, get a bad impression and label the whole manga, anime series trash based on the movies failure.

If I don't know who Spider-Man is, and I see a really, really terrible Spider-Man movie. I'm not gonna give Spider-Man another chance again.

That reminds me of The Skydivers, one of the worst movies to be featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000. It was full of scenes of people parking, even though they served no purpose whatsoever. The Dead Talk Back, another MYSTied movie, also had that same problem.

Pfffft. Any damage done to Dragon Ball's image and reputation in the U.S. was already thoroughly done by the English dub of the anime (as well as the behavior of some of segments of the fanbase) looooong before this movie ever came into being. I highly doubt that this will have much of an impact one way or the other.

People act as if this movie marks the first time ever that the franchise was ever disrespectfully mangled and defaced for an English speaking audience.

It already carries the stigma in the U.S. mainstream of being a loud, obnoxious, muscle-headed, kiddy testosterone-fest. It's hard to sink much lower than that, insofar as anime/manga goes.

Naturally! Dragon Ball and sports cars go hand-in-hand! That’d be like having a Piccolo that wasn’t gr—er wait…

I do remember hearing though, back when the original set photos came out, that it was supposed to represent some kind of modernized, realistic Kinto'un. Could just have been speculation, though at least then it’d make some kind of sense.

The sports car belongs to one of the bully's in the movie. I think his name is "Texas Touchdown" or something.

Oooooh boy! Hilarious, if true.

"And what about that rod thing from the comics? It allows him to attack opponents from a distance? I know! Let's modernize that into a gun!"
