You know that in the movie, Goku and ChiChi have known each other and been friends for years, yes?Captain Awesome wrote:Goku isn't capable of that kind of romantic love, his feelings for Chichi would have been cultivated over years, there was no chemistry or love at first sight, it was Chi-chi's persistance that brought them together.

I...uh... didn't call you sexist. You said you thought some people were overcompensating, I said I thought you were overreacting. And you think I'm overreacting. So I figure we should just let this one go :pMisterFlashdude wrote: Am I really? I said I don't like Agent Bulma and that I don't believe I'm sexist for having that opinion.

This isn’t an attack on you, but this is seriously one of the most annoying opinions I keep hearing; back when no news about the movie was out other than it was being made people were saying this in protest, and now that we’ve got some confirmation of what it looks like it’s being used as an excuse. Oh, they didn’t do it right, but how could they? Faithfully adapting Dragon Ball is impossible. Please. It’s 2008. What’s Dragon Ball got that makes it such a special case? Aliens, dragons, glowing orbs, crazy hair, energy blasts, spaceships, flying, going around at extreme speeds? All of these things have been done thousands of times in Hollywood already. They are quite commonplace. Their hand was not forced in screwing around with everything. Not on a $100 Million budget. Nope.Smooth Criminal wrote:If you go in with the mindset that different = bad, however, you will automatically hate it no matter how good it could potentially be. Think about the logistics of this for a second-- how EXACTLY would you have them adapt DRAGONBALL to the screen 100 percent faithful to the original version in live-action without failing miserably? It would be near impossible.

But yeah, over and done with.JAPPO wrote:Seems a bit sexist that you guys only want the female characters in this movie to do nothing (like in the anime).

Something that kinda feels like Dragon Ball?Anonymous Friend wrote:But what are all the anti's looking for?

... and yet manages to squeeze in a cut of a parking car. Riveting stuff.why does everyone ask to see the Kamehameha in the trailer? That's asking a lot from something that at most can only be 2 and a half minutes.
Yes, thanks to the live-action movie we'll finally see what ki attacks are supposed to look like in Dragon Ball. 'Twas about time! ^__^;And the complaints about the Ki attacks. Hours before I came to the site today, I was thinking about how someone mentioned how in the soundless trailer the attacks looked like Force attacks from TFU and I thought that that might be an excelent way to do it. this is Ki we're talking about. It's supposedly life force or energy or something other.
Er... If you remove cartoonish stuff from Dragon Ball, what's left? That... doesn't really sound like such a great idea to me.Trying to create some sort of laser-ishness to it seems silly and cartoonish to me.
'Wanna bet that Shaolin Soccer, for example, will end up feeling more like Dragon Ball than this one?

Did you just pull the "canon" card on Gohan and Goten's conception?
Fucking awesome
Well, that's ANY Dragon Ball relationship. What made Bulma dump Yamcha and get herself knocked up by Vegeta? According to the manga, we don't know. The anime kinda insinuates that Bulma was pissed at Yamcha cuz he didn't kill Maron when she hit on him, and she was later impressed with Vegeta's mad gravity training skillz.Captain Awesome wrote: It's just like the epic romance between Goku and Chichi in the manga, just because we don't see it, doesn't mean it didn't happen.
Or Kuririn and #18. We know Kuririn has a romantic soul, and #18, when she isn't acting all nonchalant, has shown a tender side. But the romance itself has #18 basically running off on Kuririn, and then years later they have a kid.
Toriyama avoided relationships. Does that mean that any other interpretation of the characters should treat them all as emotional invalids? Toriyama also prefers his protagonists innocent and comical, but that didn't stop him from endorsing the Bardock TV special.

I agree. And didn't someone say that Son wasn't capable of loving Chi Chi or something? Yeah, right. I never said Goku didn't have any feelings, but I will say again that he isn't capable of the romantic kind of love people are suggesting, he cared about Chichi, and even loved her in his own way, but Goku is for the most part an asexual being, do you really think if Chichi waited for him to "make the first move" that he'd be married with two kids?
He'd be happily training and eating by himself up on Mt. Paozu.

The argument isn't necessarily about special effects, but what kind of story and situations work on the big screen. The technology definitely exists to recreate everything from Dragon Ball on the big screen, but would it make a good film?Acid_Reign wrote:Oh, they didn’t do it right, but how could they? They're doing plenty of those things in this movie and eventually the sequels. What they aren't keeping are the things like animal-people, and hair colors and styles that would make the characters look like they got lost on the way to the circus.Acid_Reign wrote: Please. Why do people keep talking like we're only watching the first part of a trilogy?, the sequels haven't been greenlit, if this movie tanks, it's game over.SSj Kaboom wrote: They're doing plenty of those things in this movie and eventually the sequels.
Saying "There will be more ki attacks and flying in the sequels" is really just people talking out of their ass.
The actors have been signed on for three movies altogether. True, there's always a small chance they may not happen, but it seems to make more sense to assume they will.Captain Awesome wrote:Why do people keep talking like we're only watching the first part of a trilogy?, the sequels haven't been greenlit, if this movie tanks, it's game over.SSj Kaboom wrote: They're doing plenty of those things in this movie and eventually the sequels.

But special effects are the only conceivable limitation a Dragon Ball adaptation has going for it. With that out of the way all you’re really left with is a story about a brave, strong, clueless little kid who sets out on a journey to collect seven orbs that grant the collector a wish, while making friends and fighting enemies along the way. What exactly about that is so hard to translate without all this senseless interpolation?Bussani wrote:The argument isn't necessarily about special effects, but what kind of story and situations work on the big screen. My argument was never that they weren’t. My argument is that there is nothing inherent about Dragon Ball that makes it particularly hard to properly adapt with today’s moviemaking standards.SSj Kaboom wrote:They're doing plenty of those things in this movie and eventually the sequels. Alright. Put your money where your mouth is. Tell us how you would sum 153 episodes up the right way. Tell me how a story like that would go. I challenge you to do that!Acid_Reign said: My argument was never that they weren’t. I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.
