Re: Dragonbox singles question
No, they were not. There has been absolutely no word on any of the extras from any of the Dragon Box sets making their way to an individual DVD release.Tanuking wrote:Were the two TV specials released in the Dragon Box singles format?

Nope, which is one of the biggest reasons that people have not invested in these. Also, to my knowledge, the GT special is in the same boat.Tanuking wrote:Where the two TV special's released in the dragonbox sinlges format?

Nope.shotkeeper wrote:Not even trailers? Not even on the last disc? I'm asking just to make sure.

Similar bonus sets where available in the same manner with the individual releases of all of the other Dragonboxs; and let me tell you, they look smeeexy when all 4 sets are put together.

I'm totally with you on that! Not only for those reasons, but becuase those bonus dioramas for the Dragonball and Dragonball Z (p.1 & p.2) Dragonboxs are no longer available. The figures that actually come with the Dragonboxs are (in my opinion) somewhat of a substitute for the dioramas...plus there's a special feeling that comes with owning a Dragonbox...or so I'm told.shotkeeper wrote:Wow thanks guys, but TBH I still would prefer the extra's on the dragonbox then these sets. Like the dub comparisons and the old commcercials. And not to forget the OVA.

Jeeze I really hate people saying such things
It only makes me want to buy that Dragonball box off Amazon even more. But can $800 really be justified for just 26 dvds?plus there's a special feeling that comes with owning a Dragonbox...or so I'm told

No. Toei may have done a lot of work to remaster the series, but $30 to $40 for six episodes is not worth it.disturbed001 wrote:Jeeze I really hate people saying such thingsIt only makes me want to buy that Dragonball box off Amazon even more. I'm seriously thinking that it might be more worth just getting the Japanese kanzenban if I really need some good quality, original canon. It's probably the best route to go to "own" the series.
Plus! I decided I'm going to take Japanese classes at my local Community College. Open some new doors.

I'm not going to specifically try and justify the price, but for the record you're getting a lot more than just 26 discs. You get a specially designed box, a 128-page book, and an Akira Toriyama designed diorama set, including 8 mini-figures. Overall, everything is superiorly packaged to any other DragonBall release that I've seen. Plus, you're getting footage that has never been released before (i.e. special features on the 26th disc, the original next episode footage with audio, complete opening and ending credits, etc...) and all 153 episodes have been beautifully remastered.disturbed001 wrote:It only makes me want to buy that Dragonball box off Amazon even more. Also, the DB Dragon Box originally cost about $1,000, so paying the $850 isn't that bad. Besides, it's a limited edition release, so it naturally is going to cost more. Though the biggest reason the price is so high, is that CDs and DVDs are way over priced in Japan to begin with anyway.
Again, DVDs in general are just way over priced in Japan when compared to other countries, specifically the United States. So you can't really say it's not worth it, especially if you're comparing it to something outside of Japan. Within Japan, the price of the Dragon Box is actually more justified than the singles.Kendamu wrote:No. Toei may have done a lot of work to remaster the series, but $30 to $40 for six episodes is not worth it.
Here's a comparison between the two different releases of DragonBall, the Dragon Box and the singles. If you use the current exchange rate, you can pick up the discounted DB Dragon Box singles from Amazon Japan at roughly $33 per disc. So to pick up all 26 discs, it would cost you about $860 ($33x26 discs). If you buy the DB Dragon Box from Amazon Japan, it will cost you about $830. So which one is the better deal?

I actually didn't know that would come with this set, I thought it was a pre-order bonus only.and an Akira Toriyama designed diorama set, including 8 mini-figures
EDIT: It's funny because I actually went all the way through the checkout process and for some reason the box comes to 80,000 yen, and shipping it 2,000 yen...

Lots of extra stuff that's really cool. Still, I live in a part of the world where 14 episodes of TMNT costs $15, 20 episodes of Avatar costs $45, and 28 episodes of Batman: TAS costs $40. So, overpriced Japanese Dragonball DVDs aren't going to win me over no matter how cool they are due to a severe lack-of-episodes.

Heck, $800 dollars for 26 DVDs is about $30 a disc, which isn't too bad for
Japan.
Japan.

Maybe to you guys its not that bad (for Japan). But no matter where in the world I am, I'd still lose $800 or so on that set. Sure, its roughly $30 a disc and lots of extras, but I'm coming from a very personal point-of-view on how much its worth.
I already own every obscure Dragonball item I want (Dragonballs, a Scouter, and a Senzu jar). My apartment is already really cluttered so I don't have room for the extra displays and such. $800 is about 3.5 months worth of bills for me. I already own the series in my favorite format (the manga) in two different languages. I barely watch television and my DVD drive on my computer is busted.
Also, I take into account that there are other shows that I like that offer me more episodes for a similar price without taking away from the overall viewing quality (i.e. no faux remastering like the US DBZ releases). These shows' American releases will still be the same price on Amazon.com even if I moved to Japan just the same as how the Dragonbox singles are still the same price even while I live in America.
So, if you can't relate to any of these things then by all means buy it.

While the conversation has been fine thus far, I do want to interject that this topic does and should have nothing to do with justification of anyone's purchases. Thanks!
