Is Toriyama kinky or perverted?

Post by Dayspring » Wed Oct 15, 2008 4:17 pm

So I just got the French translation of Hetappi Manga Kenkyuujo (badly translated to "The Apprentice Mangaka" :? ). It's never been a secret that the further back you go into Toriyama's work, the more fanservice you'll find. But some of the jokes put you on edge, PRAYING it's lost in translation (Grampa Gohan makes Goku rest his head on his crotch? O_O ). There's been some dirtier jokes pre-DB, and he's also published Lady Red (adult-themed gag-manga consisting of 4 one-shots) and a two-page spread in Bitch's Life.

The first Hetappi joke is typical ero-sennin: Hetappi walks in on Tori-bot reading a dirty magazine. Toriyama claims it's because this chapter of the story is about how to draw women. He breathes a sigh of relief Hetappi believes him. The other dirty joke however... The final chapter starts off with Tori-bot giving the lecture by having us watch a casette (those things that came out before DVDs). When he starts the VCR, however, we get a nice shot of a woman on top, groping her tits as she orgasms. The joke is that he put the wrong cassette in. However, if we have any such cassettes we want to get rid of, we shouldn't hesitate to send them to him. :P

Though I haven't read Lady Red, I've seen his Bitch's Life submissions. It's pretty tame: a pirate ship with a bunch of half-to-fully nekkid pirate women. Imagine the woman from Blue Dragon (same art style). Tons of her without tops, or just a belt, or no pants (one riding a pteradactyl, if that floats your boat). It isn't arousing in the least, but it's a really cool pic that deserves to be put into a general Toriyama Art Book. Basically, it's even more tame than the Hetappi pic, whereas submissions to Bitch's Life are usually much more provacative (it's hentai for arousal's sake).

Seeing how much Toriyama employs gag-hentai, and how suggestive his earlier gag-hentai is, does anybody else get the impression that he's as perverted as Kamesennin? :P

EDIT:
Hetappi Manga Kenkyuujo = 1984
Lady Red = 1987
Bitch's Life = 2001

2nd EDIT:
<snipped for being faulty Wiki info>

3rd EDIT:
Herms wrote:First, Lady Red ran in Super Jump, not Weekly Jump. It's was a single, three page story. Super Jump is having an annersary right now, so I've been seeing ads in the subway for it that feature Lady Red. Anyway, I actually picked up the two Toriyama Man-Kan volumes recently, and I also got the Toriyama Exhibition book, which was the only other place Lady Red's been printed in. So I've managed to read it in two formats. It's...uh...well, here's a summary:

Lady Red is a former office lady who quit her job to become a "messenger of justice", even though this doesn't pay at all. She drives around in her completely ordinary, slightly beat-up car with "justice" written on the side, patrolling for evil. As she's driving along one day, she hits the car in front of her. The driver berates her, and Lady Red gives him the finger as he drives away.

Suddenly there's gunshots. Lady Red turns to see a bank robber fleeing the scene of the crime. She gets in her car to try and pursue him, but it won't move. So she hails a taxi and follows the bank robber back to his house. However, she doesn't have any money to pay the fair. She offendedly asks the taxi drives if he intends to take money from an ally of justice. He grabs her hand and says that if she doesn't have any money, then she'll have to "pay with her body". There's a wide shot of the taxi and its surroundings, and we hear Lady Red go "Ah.....!". In the next panel, the taxi driver says "so long" and drives away, leaving behind a disheveled and phased-out looking Lady Red.

Lady Red soon snaps out of it, saying that it's no time for broken spirits. She dashes to the bank robber's house and barges in, telling the bank robber to surrender quietly. Instead he grabs her arm and says they should have some fun together. He undresses the protesting Lady Red, and then...In the next panel, Lady Red is lying naked on the bank robber's bed (we only see her from behind). The robber tosses her a stack of bills for "making him refreshed". Lady Red picks up the money and stares at it in silence (the money covers her breasts, and her legs block her privates). In the last panel, Lady Red is on the streets working as a prostitute, with a man asking her "how much?". The closing narration reads "I am Lady Red. Now, I am a messenger of sexual skill." (I pun on "messenger of justice"; justice is 正義/seigi, while "sexual skill" is 性技, which is read the same way. 性技 doesn't appear to be an actual word though, but rather just a kanji combination Toriyama made up for the sake of a pun).

Fuck Dende. Toriyama's MY new god!

It actually wouldn't surprise me if Roshi was a literal personification of Toriyama's deep, inner, perverted thoughts. After all, what better way is there to express yourself? =P

I always found the casual sexual humor in the series pretty entertaining, though. What's great is how blunt he is about it--Roshi would take every opportunity to shove his face in a pair of breasts, Goku would casually pat peoples' crotches to see what gender they were, and Oolong would cover the loli fetish by abducting young women as his "brides." Yes, we saw what you did there.

It's a bit of a shame that such a light-hearted feel to the series was overtaken by fighting. I mean, DBZ still has some fun moments in it, but it doesn't really feel the same. :(

I agree, Dragon Ball is my favorite part of the whole series.

Agreed. We get Paf Paf moments in filler, but I want to see #18 beat the crap out of Roshi in the manga!

Or better yet: Krillin taking dating advice from Roshi while courting #18! XD

It would also be funny to see Chichi explaining to Goku what goes on during honeymoons. :P

This new news (to me anyway) reminds me of how Dan Green voiced in hentai using his Yami Yugi voice...anything for a paycheck I guess.

It's hardly "anything for a paycheck." Toriyama was well-established by the time Lady Red came out. His entry in Bitch's Life came out years after he finished writing the 42nd and final volume of Dragonball.

Yeah, according to the French Wikipedia, Lady Red is softcore hentai along the theme of GO! GO! ACKMAN! in its dark humour. Apparently Lady Red is a superheroine without any vices -that is, until she gives up her virginity to a handsome man. After losing her virginity, she becomes a total slut and falls into a world of depravity. Essentially she becomes obsessed with discovering what all the other vices (drinking, smoking, etc) can offer her and goes from superhero to super-street walker.

That is so friggin' awesome. I actually really want to read it! XD

I've put this in the first post as an edit.

Wow, really interesting tidbit of news. I never really looked into Akira Toriyama's other work besides the 'work-safe' type. Adult gag manga one-shots? Hell, I'm in!

Did a quick search on google:

http://www.sakuramedia.com/website04/sh ... 661-1209-1

Sakura Media has 'Bitch's Life'. Unfortunately it's discontinued, however if you give the place a call maybe they could make a few arrangements and find some in stock.

Viz did Dragonball (split into DB and DBZ), Daizenshuu 1, Cowa, Sandland, and Dr. Slump. Whatever VIZ hasn't done, I try to pick up by getting Glénat's (French) translations, which include:

-Hetappi Manga Kenkyuujo (translated as "The Apprentice Mangka")
-Akira Toriyama's Manga Theater 1-3 (translated as "Akira Toriyama: Short Stories" -collects 90% of his non-tankobon one-shots)
-Kajika
-Neko Majin (NM, Mike, Z)
-Daizenshuu 7

Stuff neither in English nor in French:

-Awawa World (1977): unpublished altogether. Apparently the Raudo (Grey's race, who guest-star in tons of his other works) are introduced here. He wrote this prior to becoming published at all.
-Chotto Kaettekita Dr. Slump (1994-97): 4 slim tankobon
-Tokimecha (1996): One-shot
-Alien X Peke (1997): One-shot
-Bubul (1997): One-shot
-New Cashman Saving Soldier (1998): A tankoubon recollecting the old Cashman one-shots and a new Cashman one-shot (or series of).
-Tahi Mahi (1998): 1 tankobon. No idea what it's about.
-Cross Epoch (2006): One-shot crossover between DB and One Piece.
-Dr. Mashirito Abale-chan (2007): One-shot in SJ.
-Sachiechan GUU (April 2008): One-shot of about 53 pages. Written by Toriyama, but drawn by Masakazu Katsura (I's, Zetman).

Non-Manga:
-Wolf (1990): Short story with pics. Published in Akira Toriyama: The World.
-Toccio The Angel (1996): Nao-Manga of 50-odd pages.
-Bitch's Life (2001): Just a 2-page soft-hentai picture.

No. A ton of preview pages are available off another site has used to sell it. That's why I said I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post it. I found it by checking out the wikipedia entry for Bitch's Life.

I want the Toriyama pic, though. Is it weird that the more gag-hentai I find out he's done, the more hentai I want to read that's made by him?

And for the record, I'm a total perv. :P

Interesting. Occording to Kanzentai (http://www.kanzentai.com/index.php?star ... tion=&id=& -scroll down to August 8 ), Akira Toriyama Man-Kan Full-Seating 1 (basically a reprint of stories randomly taken from the three Akira Toriyama's Manga Theater tankoubon) will be publishing Lady Red. It also states that this is the first time Lady Red is being published outside of Weekly Jump. This makes me think that it's muuuch more tame than the French Wiki hinted at, probably a cross between Go Go Ackman and Tongpoo in terms of naughtiness.

I knew nothing of Bitch's Life. I remember seeing that pirate boat image a couple years ago. A friend found it on 4chan and showed it to me knowing I was a huge Toriyama fan. I was amazed, I tried to talk myself out of believing it was real, but the style and coloring were undeniable. Anyways, here's my confirmation!

As far his other works, I've never seen anything regarding Lady Red, is there any artwork from it online? I've never seen ANYTHING online aside from listings of Toriyama's list of works.

I'm also a Kiyohiko Azuma fan and almost paid $90 for his hentai manga "Inma no Ranbu", I had to cancel at the last minute... yeah... pervert here too.

Looking at the Bitch life image I tempted look for Waldo. Anywho, I Never heard of Lady Red or Bitch Life and its almost weirdly awesome that one of my favorite Japanese artist did some adult work. I'm even more happy to know that most (if not all) were gag and humor centric.

Toriyama is THE man. I must have more of his work.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.
