Do you prefer Dragonball or DBZ?
My main problem with DBZ is that the Buu saga wasn't really tied into anything. It would have been much cooler if Buu tied into something from Dragonball like the Androids did, but preferably bigger since he's the final boss. Buu kind of appears out of nowhere. I suppose it continues the "there will nearly always be a bigger threat" theme from Dragonball Roshi tried to teach Goku, but that's about it.
I remember my friends disliked the Buu saga, but in these parts people seem to hold it in as high regard as the Cell/Androids saga. I really liked the Buus.

The Buu arc elaborates more upon the infrastructure of 'Other World', or 'Heaven', of which was left unexplored thoroughly after the Saiyan arc.Rena Rune wrote:My main problem with DBZ is that the Buu saga wasn't really tied into anything. Everything before Raditz shows up is my preference, should I have to choose. Of course I love all of the "Z" stuff too, with an especially great love of the Buu arc stuff....
...I can't help but feel like the older stuff is better. There's a sense of light-hearted adventure and humor about the whole thing. It feels more like a martial arts story, and the action in the series is just better. I don't care how STRONG they are, if their fight consists of "WOW THEY'RE GOING SO FAST THAT WE CAN'T SEE THEM AND NEED TO USE OUR KI SENSING POWERS!", it's not good action.
Same sentiment towards recycling the same four punches and blocks while the characters float, dissapear, and then float somewhere else. Rinse, repeat, yawn.
Further, Z likes to abandon characters. I mean, I don't think there was a point in the orignal DB stuff where a main character was just forced to the sidelines or into the mountains because they were totally worthless.
Also, it's before Power Levels.

I consider them as both one series.
I really don't like the anime (DB/DBZ) that much. Events are stretched paper thin and filler is added. It makes it very hard for me to watch and enjoy it. Goku suddenly meets and fights with characters that hadn't been introduced yet. WHAT?! Tenshinhan has a pet pig that terrorizes people. WHAT?! Freeza fights and kills three warrior Namekians before fighting with Nail. WHAT?! All the filler really cheapens the stuff that isn't. Also Toei has a way with making sure filler episodes are drawn and animated beautifully while at the same time shitting on the things that actually happened. I find it wholly frustrating.
That said I love the music. I've been in complete love with Hironobu Kageyama since I first heard him back in the mid nineties, and the score is wonderful. The voice acting is also fantastic.
As far as what part of the series I like more, I would have to say that I prefer the beginning. I really love the adventure portion of the series. I would have loved it if Toriyama would have gone back to that at some point.

...Um, I hate to break it to you, but the manga and the anime are both equally fictitious.mrkaizoku wrote:Also Toei has a way with making sure filler episodes are drawn and animated beautifully while at the same time shitting on the things that actually happened. I find it wholly frustrating.
They never happened.
Sorry.
