Episode #0155! VegettoEX and Meri talk about news from all over the world, and somehow manage to talk about the live-action movie without the show eating itself alive. What does the general population see the movie as, and now that there is an official trailer, how do WE see the movie? Jeff drops in to do Volume 22 in our "Manga Review of Awesomeness", and the Freeza saga seems like it has begun to pick up now that everyone has arrived on Namek. Releases and your e-mails round out the episode! Referenced sites:
Go ahead and grab it. Big thanks to godofchaos for hosting the rather sweet *one-hundred-fifty-five* episodes, now.

As we mentioned, it is absolutely imperative that you let us know whether or not you prefer the recap of the chapters in the manga before we jump into the analysis. No feelings will be hurt; we want YOU to enjoy it and get as much out of the show as you can. If you would rather drop us an e-mail than respond in the thread... that's fine, too!

You talked about the live-action movie and the podcast didn't explode?! Sir, you must have some special powers to thwart the "DragonBall Gods". Listening... while studying. 8)

I like the recap. I'm not reading each volume before listening to the podcast review of it, so it reminds me what happened. Sure I'll remember the big plot points, but I usually forget the smaller details.

Can't wait to hear the opinion of you guys about the live action!

Edit: I noticed you linked Glenat's DB manga page at the podcast? I own all those volumes (in dutch).. Are you guys gonna talk about those?

Ugh, guess I'll find out tomorrow :P

Meri appears to same attitude about the movie as a lot of people on here, no matter what we find out about his movie, it's garbage. Which I think is a ridiculous stance to have, because then you are setting yourself up to hate something no matter how good it may be. I am glad Mike is staying open minded about the whole thing.

Second, Forbidden Kingdom was good. At least all my friends and I really liked it.

Also, the special effects being "bad" in the trailer. Well, I can tell you that movies that come out nowadays often have bad special effects and I have no idea why. Movies that came out from 1990-1994 had way better special effects than movies from now. Plus, the Special Effects in a trailer are always worse than they are in the movie, cause they are always working on the special effects until practically the last minute on all movies like this.

I like having the recap. I can live without it, but I will miss it. ^^;

Honestly, I thought the reason the podcast was late (prior to listening/reading) was because the live action curse had struck your equipment again. XD

Congratulations on your friends' wedding!

On the topic of no one liking Kami-sama, maybe Jeff should watch movie 1, where Kami acts kinda badass. I'm sure you have a copy to spare Mike. :P

I think I like having the recap, because it seems odd for you to just start talking about events without going over what they are. Even for guys like me, who have read the story many times through, it can be hard to remember just what happens in a particular volume. But I do think the recaps have been to long. I think you should keep them, but shorten them down to maybe a only a general summary of the volume, instead of chapter by chapter.
Viz Kaio: Well OK, you seem like you have an honest face
Viz Piccolo: And you have terrible eyesight
Ugh, this is driving me crazy. I know that that bit of dialogue is different in the original, but I can't for the life of me remember how it goes. I don't Viz's version is unfaithful to the spirit of the original, though.

You wondered how logical it was for Tenshinhan, Piccolo and co. to get to Kaio's so much faster than Goku. Not to get all power level-y, but when Goku went to Kaio's he was far weaker than Raditz. But Piccolo and everyone easily beat the Saibaimen, who were supposed to be on par with Raditz, so it's already been shown that at this point they'll all far stronger than Goku was when he went to Kaio's. So I don't see any real problem there. Also, remember that it's been several months since they all died on Earth.

If I remember right, you can actually see the crater Vegeta landed in fill with water.

While the extra information on Romper Room is certainly interesting, it's worth repeating that Romper Room isn't mentioned at all in the actual Japanese dialogue. The phrase "Romper Room is over" is just a weird quirk of the English subs.

Phew! I thought there may not be an episode this week. You scared me! Going to listen in a few!

Good podcast guys!
This arc of hiding on Namek is good stuff, and I'm glad that Jeff enjoyed it.
The grammar bothers me too, as did the water in the ditch thing. I went back to the Anime to watch the Vegeta vs. Zarbon fight.
In the scene where Vegeta is drilled to the ground; you actually get to see the water fill the ditch. Just want to throw that out there.

Two main reasons why I love this arc of the series:
- Goku is not the focus for a while, and it was a breath of fresh air for me. The series becomes very Kuririn, Vegeta, and Gohan centric. Plus, this is the beginning of the "hints" of Gohan becoming the new main character later on.
I hope Mike starts ask Jeff about what he thinks about Gohan's role.
- The focus on Vegeta. We finally get to see Vegeta in action, and see what he is good at. But it's great to see that he knows he cannot beat Freeza. It'll be interesting for Jeff to see where Vegeta goes in strength and character.

Again good job guys!
Gohan: "You're a Buddhist." Kuririn: "A hungry Buddhist!"

Awesome, will listen to on the train to work to get my groggy early morning Dragonball fix.

*edit* I ended up listening to it immediately after posting this*

My thoughts on the lack of recaps in the manga review of awesomeness, is that without them, the analysis (while still enjoyable) didn't feel very cohesive, despite having read volume in question recently (I picked up the viz big release) I still found myself having trouble remembering certain events and I think it helped you guys by doing the recap, your comments seemed to follow a more logical progression, whereas this time it was a little haphazard.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts on the matter, keep up the great work.

I listened half way now, and I have to say that I feel the same way Mike does... I wish to like this movie when I go see it. But I doubt I will...

Anyway, it was pretty funny to hear how you guys had trouble pronoucing "Glenat". You sort of say it as Glay-nat (the "a" as in "car").

Oh, and of course I'm so happy that we dutch fans get the Kanzenban. I think I will rebuy the entire manga for this better release. It's been a long time to collect all the current ones I have now... One volume appeared every month for years, and like you guys already mentioned they were cut in half so technically we got one volume per two months. I've been collecting the manga since I was a kid basically. XD

Like I said, I couldn't be happier and I look forward into listening the rest of the podcast on my way back home. ^^ *currently at school*

Of the Viz "Complete Illustrations", I find the "Art of Shonen Jump" label on the side to be a bit disconcerting. Since the other books aren't exactly "art books", it makes me wonder if the others fit into the "Art of SJ" "brand".

Then again, I suppose if it'll sell well, they'll release it. =p

My thoughts exactly. Its a bit weird to listen to a discussion about a certain volume, when i don't remember it that well. And i do think you should only make an overall summary of the entire volume instead of chapter by chapter.
About the live action. I'm a bit exited myself. Of course, it doesn't have the charm the manga does, because, like Meri said its too difficult or impossible to make a good adaptation of Dragon Ball for the big screen. But if there are two live action movies of Dragon Ball and no one hates it, then why can't we think of this new live action the same way?

It's N.F.A.A. ((No Fun At All)) doing the M.R.O.A. without the recap
That's the way you've been doing for the 21st episodes of the review... why change it to something make it not interesting?

The Dutch are getting their Kanzenban!! First Japan, and then China... where's next? America?......... nah
A side not... the Chinese Kanzenban do not have the arts of other mangakas, which make me kinda sad

Freeza have some panels in this volume that make him so... kinda creepy...!! And that's what make me ((and Mike)) love him a lot!!

example #1 p.7
Image

example #2 p.33
Image

example #3 p.35 ((I laugh at this one every time I see it))
Image

example #4 p.49
Image

example #5 p.111
Image

Vegeta is starting to be what he is realy famous for... A badass killer!!

And as a very interesting note about this volume....

It ended with the very exact events, that the Arabic dub of the show was ended ((Kuririn arrives at the Great Elder's house, Vegeta is defeated by Zarbon))

I liked The Forbidden Kingdom. I desided to go watch because it was based on Journey to The West before I knew that it's starring both Jackie Chan and Jet Li

A game based on a movie based on an Anime based on a manga... I wish Julian was there to say his opinion.

EDIT:

The others might get labled as "Shonen Jump Profiles"

Bura wrote:I noticed you linked Glenat's DB manga page at the podcast?
That was the link provided to us to showcase Glenat's previous manga run. Not much else to talk about.
omegacwa wrote:Meri appears to same attitude about the movie as a lot of people on here, no matter what we find out about his movie, it's garbage.
Please note that Meri *did* in fact say that neither of us are COMPLETELY writing it off just yet and it would not be fair to do so... but all signs are pointing to... well... yeah. If you ask us (and people did), nearly everything we've seen has been pretty much garbage, and we stand by that opinion.
omegacwa wrote:Second, Forbidden Kingdom was good. At least all my friends and I really liked it.
We are going to have SERIOUS disagreements about movies, then...!
Captain Awesome wrote:I still found myself having trouble remembering certain events and I think it helped you guys by doing the recap, your comments seemed to follow a more logical progression, whereas this time it was a little haphazard.
I think you nailed it from my perspective. When we jumped into doing the analysis, we hadn't just done the recap for ourselves... and even though we just recently read it... if it was clear to YOU that it seemed a little more haphazard in its flow, then that's a problem. I still think we covered some good stuff, but I do agree that it could have been structured better.
SHINOBI-03 wrote:That's the way you've been doing for the 21st episodes of the review... why change it to something make it not interesting?
We don't want to keep doing something if it doesn't serve a purpose and isn't entertaining. Just because we've done it that way for 21 volumes doesn't mean that it's the "right" way to do it. It sounds like you think it's valuable, which is totally fine!

Anyway, thanks for the feedback on what you are all looking for and to get out of the show. Between the forum posts and e-mails thus far, I'm seeing an overwhelmingly strong desire for *something* of a recap before the analysis; whether or not chapter-by-chapter is the right way to go is up in the air.
