Tanooki Takes A Look At DragonBall Z: TV Animation Comics

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Mon Mar 02, 2009 12:31 pm

It's snowing, Iam home, Iam very bored. I really didn't plan on doing this but I really have nothing better to do. So you know when I get something new or something a little different, I'll post what I call a dissection of it. Just to show off the product for people who are more curious about it or maybe don't know much about it. Usually I won't really give my opinion on it cause it's not a review per say but this... this is going to be a little different...

Lets me start off by saying yes, this is redundantly redundant as Julian often says. There really is no reason for this kind of product. It's a manga based on the anime which was based on the manga. Just read the manga or watch the show.

Alright lets get started. First thing you'll notice is the size, this thing is really small.

Image

Even though its smaller then all those in the picture I think it's about the same size as the original Japanese tankobon editions (not shown). I was kind of expecting this thing to be magazine size. I guess this is to mimic the whole manga experience? They try to mimic the whole manga layout throughout this book. For example, in the manga when they show the characters that have been appearing and there current status. They do the same here:

Image

Chapters are just like episode title screens. The DragonBalls in the background with the name of the chapter\episode centered in the middle. This is kind of confusing because they don't change the title\chapter title when a new episode starts, perhaps it's to be more like the manga.

Image

And not that it matters but, the title page to the ani-manga is a shot from somewhere in the book put into a DragonBall. Eh, who cares? Are you still reading this? *Yawn*

Image

The only good thing I can think of. Which is kind of a stretch is a lot of the scenes that were panned across in the anime are usually shown in full...

Image

Image

Is that it? Is that really the only good thing I can find about this... thing? Yea, I guess so. But, then again, I don't think I'll ever hear someone saying "Dude, I gotta get that ani-manga for the awesome pan shots!". What I don't understand is why did they try to mimic the manga so much? If they wanted to release a manga then re-release the manga (or don't). I think it would have helped if they didn't try so hard to make it a manga. I would have liked to see some background on the episodes that were used in the book like air dates, some production notes... something. They sometimes do that with the movie ani-mangas which are kinda understandable because there is no corresponding manga for those films. I don't know man, this just seems really pointless. :?

Oh, jeez, it seems even more stupid and pointless now that I've seen pictures of it.

The animanga itself looks fine, I guess. It's just, why? Why create this? Who desires this item?

Carlsen Comics wrote:THE SAIYAN SAGA consists, like the old DRAGON BALL Z books (the movie animanga), of still shots from the film edition of DRAGON BALL. This means the story is being told in COLOR, and characters and machines look like they do on TV. But this time the story is closer to Toriyama's original source, så DBZ THE SAIYAN SAGA must be said to deliver the best from both worlds.
So yeah. It's Dragon Ball, but HOLY SHIT IT'S IN COLOR.

It's retarted... but hey, I buy the movie ani-mangas and ONLY for the movies.

In the local Kinokuniya, the normal tankobon is 29 UAE Dirhams, and I found a movie ani-manga for BLEACH's second movie, and it was 100 Dirhams!! One US Dollar equals 3.67 UAE Dirhams, so that means a tankobon is nearly $7.9, and the ani-manga is $27.25

Are ani-mangas that "expensive" just because they are in colors? The Kanzenbans were 50 ADH = $13.62

Jeez, almost 30 bucks for an ani-manga!? The one I have (in the pictures above) was $9.50.

I don't buy/read the manga (*dodges stones*), but if I did and I had a choice, I'd probably be more inclined to go for the animanga rather than the black and white original. If the only difference is that the animanga is in color and the pages are (I assume) glossy, but basically the same shots are used across the board, that would be my preference.

All the same, your point is well-received. Many DB fans already have the original manga or the DVDs, so there really isn't much of a point. Well, there is a point. It's called $$$, and we know that someone has to buy them.

Redundant, sure, but having the story in color is awesome. That's always been one of my biggest gripes about manga: no color! (Many) American comics nowadays have amazing artwork and coloring. At the same time though, I much prefer the original artist's version.

I always liked the movie comics. How do you feel about those? Not as pointless as this thing.

Kind of pointless, but pretty neat at the same time. Certainly makes the drawings look crisper, in any case!

I bought one of these by accident once, but at least it was Dead Zone < < And I love me some Dead Zone like crazy, so it wasn't too much of a disapointment.

Otherwise.... yeah. Animanga sucks.

I guess these are okay, they let you experience the series in a different way I suppose.

I'd much prefer to see the original manga in color though...
In a nutshell: Likes the sub and the dub and barely ever posts.

If I knew about those before the manga I would have bought them, the color gives it an American comic feel to it; I hope they all go into reprint soon.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

Couple questions...

Do these use screenshots or cels? I used to have the Bardock special animanga, and remeber differences from the actual animation. The notable difference I remeber involed... naked Bardock. If I remeber correctly, the animanga didn't have tubes covering his butt.

Second, do these cover all the episodes or just certain ones? I had the Sailor Moon animanga for awhile, and they typically skipped filler episodes.

I might be wrong but I think the version you're talking about is the censored version. Iam pretty sure there are no bars in the original version.

There is no filler.

I usually don't condone stealing but... That's redundantly redundant.

This was in the TV special, but the animanga didn't have the whole ball-tube thing covering his backside. I'm pretty sure this wasn't a censor by FUNI.

Of course, I can't really remeber any other differences between the animanga and actual TV animation.

Collecting reasons? I bought the Sailor Moon animanga to see what I was missing from the dub (This was waaaayy before uncut DVDs were out). I did the same with Pokemon too.

I actually really like the look of these things, but I do agree-ably admit that the point behind these is hard to find. Having the manga in full sharp color is probably the biggest plus, and the way that the panels aren't quite the 4:3 frames we're used to from the anime, and not quite the randomly proportioned quadrilaterals we're used to from the original manga is a nice new visual perk, IMO. If I were to buy these (and I do hope to pick up at least one or two of them in my life), it would be purely for the pretty little pictures!

By the way, I've collected quite a few images of what the interiors of a lot of these books (the film and the TV ones) look like, so if anyone else else wants them, I'll post 'em.

I prefer the more professional black-and-white feel than the colorful style. I would still buy them if they were not so expensive, but I would be reading the manga or watching the anime first.
Gohan: At least he doesn't have his sword out anymore.
Kuririn: Yeah, and your dad put his finger away too.
