Episode #0168! VegettoEX, Meri, and Julian review all things "Dragon Ball Evolution". We start out with Ayumi Hamasaki's CD single for the movie's theme song ("Rule"), go into the VizKids junior novel adaptation, and finally... the big one... Julian reviews the actual movie itself from its Japanese theatrical debut. It seems like it has been such a long time coming, and an impossibility, at that. How does it all stack up? Is it even worth the ticket price? Some random news bits, March's releases, and a quick e-mail round out the episode. Referenced sites:
Go ahead and grab it. Big thanks to godofchaos for hosting the rather sweet *one-hundred-sixty-eight* episodes, now.

Like I mentioned on the home page, the "curse" continued with this episode. Meri's mic or XLR cable shorted out occasionally (you'll hear one or two random crackles I couldn't edit around, but it's otherwise fine). The main problem (which may relate to that earlier issue) was that our local track (for myself and Meri) inexplicably had horrible ambient noise that would rise up out of nowhere and overtake the track. Thankfully, because I do multi-track recording here, I was able to just silence it out if and when it randomly popped up... you shouldn't even be able to tell anything was there.

HAH. Take that, stupid curse!

The 'curse' continues. X3 I always found it amusing that the hardware just doesn't like the movie.

Technical Difficulties! Woot! Anyway....

I can't listen to it now, but I can't wait to listen to it! For once, a music conversation I can actually relate to!

Though a very minor technicality, the release date for the next Super Exciting Guide is actually April 3rd, not the 4th. The same goes for the next TV animation comic.

I think from now on I'll refrain from referring to this "thing" known as DragonBall Evolution, for fear of killing either Kanzentai or Daizenshuu EX... unless I'm on the podcast. Then it's no holds bar! ;)

Nice issue! Lots of spoilers.

I love how Julian put it. "Enjoy it for just being an absurd experience" (paraphrasing), that's how I've been seeing Dragon Ball Evolution from the beginning. I can't take any of it seriously because...well, it isn't serious. The Goku and Chichi scenes do sound horrible though...

It's funny that you answered that email; someone asked that very question here on the forum just yesterday or today.

Uhh, I thought I had something else to say, but I must have forgotten it.

Edit: Oh now I remember. In the manga Daimao created Drum to fight Tenshinhan even though he could have easily done it himself. I guess it's just a cocky "I don't even need to bother" kind of thing.

At least we got an all out Evolution-based episode that survived the curse :)

I wonder if Julian asked the Japanese audience about the movie and how they felt about it when compared to the original manga/anime

Let's hope for another G.I.N.O. feelings, and we will get a Japanese live-action movie made by Japan if the American was considered bad.

I'd also like to add that the Japanese dub of the movie might be interesting to listen to if only because its starring Usopp's (Ranma's, InuYasha's, L's ) seiyuu as Goku and Haruhi's (Konata's, Misa's ) seiyuu as Bulma.

It will be sad yet amusing if the Japanese dub ends up better than the actual original.

Ever since I heard those two were going to be in the cast of seiyuu for DBE's Japanese dub I've wanted to draw my own poster for the movie with Usopp dressed in Chatku's gi and Haruhi dressed as Promethum-Orb Bulma.

Also, I'd include Luffy dressed as Kuririn with a bald cap on.

LOL, great episode. Loved Mike's take on the Junior Novel and Julian's take on the movie. Julian's "Jet Li phoned in his performance" literally had me laughing out loud. Hard.

Edit: Oh, and Julian botching the sign off line makes me feel not so bad about doing the same last week ;p

I would love to see this.

As for the actual episode, I can't think of anything to say other than "ROFL". Good job, guys. :]

A few random things I wanted to point out:

*****SPOILERS*****

- Master Roshi does indeed say "Ka...me...ha...me...HAAAA!!!!" when he's reviving Goku in the movie.

- I don't remember anyone saying "Kakarott"...in fact, I don't remember the fact that Goku is a Saiya-Jin being brought up at all.

- The "Bikini Quarterly" scene that Julian alluded to was one of those scenes that *almost* got it. Because after Bulma comments on him even having it in the first place, Roshi fumbles around before delivering an awkward "um...it was a collector's edition!" The whole "Roshi being embarrassed about being thought of as a perv" thing is really out-of-character, in my eyes, and pretty much ruins what would have otherwise been a nice nod to us fans.

- As far as the off-color Mai-sneaking-into-Goku's-bedroom scene...after she flees, Goku is seen coming from the opposite direction (I guess he got up to go to the bathroom or something?) and one of the characters - Bulma, maybe - says something like "you weren't in your room?" Which kind of drives the whole awkward "OMG did they just have the sekks!?!?" thing home even more.

- Someone mentioned the Mai vs. Bulma fight at the end as an example of only women being allowed to hit women. But I actually noticed that Goku hit women twice - he hit Mai when the gang's in that weird lava place and again when Chi-Chi and Mai, disguised as Chi-Chi, are fighting. Which was really weird, actually - like, Goku hitting women isn't that OOC since he doesn't really care about things like gender stereotypes, but it's not something I would have expected to see in an American-made movie for American audiences.

- Mike's right when he's talking about Chow Yun-Fat's pronunciation of "Gohan"...he does indeed say it with that sort of nasal tone. Which is weird since Justin Chatwin pronounces the name correctly earlier in the movie.

Great Episode, guys!

First off, I wanna say that I was a tad dissapointed at the review of the Rule CD single. It's not the review itself, but rather the way you guys handled it. I was expecting, you know, a full-on track by track review like many of your other CD reviews. For once, I can relate to a review, and the one time I can, you guys don't do it. I suppose it can't be helped, seeing as you recorded yesterday.

Most junior novels tend to have a few details wrong, or simply, not there, typically because a)., it's a Junior Novel, and b)., because the authors aren't always allowed to write everything that happens in the movie. Thus, the whole "Chi-chi McRoberts" and "Bulma Encantor" or whatever nonsense that was, was just that. Nonsense. It's almost like book filler, there to fill up pages.

From the sounds of Julian, and Mike, it seems DBE may very well be...
entertaining, to say the least. I do hope fans won't go the whole "G.I.N.O" route, and just watch the movie for what it is.

Liked the movie review and will be waiting for the ''final'' review next month.
And like VenomSymbiote said, the Rule CD review could have been handled like the other CD reviews you guys do. But it seems like that is being taken care of and I only have to pay attention to the site and the feed, which, needless to say, I do every day.

By the way, this is actually the x-th time I'm hearing that Akira Toriyama had to redraw new villians for the Jinzōningen arc which eventually led to the final form of Cell. But where was this actually stated/said officially? The Daizenshuu books?

Not really, he tried to hide his dirty mags in DB Movie 2 (Sleeping Princess).

Wait, what podcast? OH! Yeah, I got about halfway through and had to stop. Thought your "Rule" review was funny!
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Yeah, it was mentioned in Shenron Times #2, the special bonus insert for Daizenshuu 2, and a few other places:

(AT=Toriyama, FT=Fuyuto Takeda, Toriyama's third editor, YK=Yuu Kondou, Toriyama's second editor, and Torishima is Kazuhiko Torishima, Toriyama's firt editor for DB and his editor for all of Dr. Slump)
AT: You're terrible to say that, Torishima-san. Right around then was when the Artificial Humans No. 19 and No. 20 appeared. You weren't my editor or anything anymore, but you specifically called me to say "I thought that the enemies had finally come, but aren't these just a geezer and a fatso?" (laughs) In truth, I hadn't had plans for anyone but No. 19 and No. 20 to appear. But there was no helping it, so I brought out No. 17 and No. 18. Then you called me up and said "What, this time it's just some brats?" So I brought out Cell. (laughs)

FT: So you hadn't planned on Cell appearing at all?

AT: That's right. I liked No. 19 and No. 20 just fine. And I liked the initial Cell fine as well.

FT: The bug-like one?

AT: But Kondou-san said "He looks ugly. Of course, he can transform.", so I had no choice but to transform him into his second-form.

YK: Was that how it was?

AT: And then you were really awful, Kondou-san. "This time, doesn't he look like a moron? Hurry up and make him into his perfect-form." you said.

YK: But he really did look like a moron. (laughs)

AT: With second-form Cell as well, I liked him well enough. Actually, I had wanted him to play a more active role. But since I was told he looked stupid, I had no choice but to change him. (laughs) So I made him into his cool-looking perfect-form, which was to Kondou-san's liking.
Kanzenshuu: Is that place still around?
Sometimes, I tweet things
We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.
