Toriyama's GT Designs

Post by Jackal puFF » Fri Jun 05, 2009 4:43 am

Are there any more pictures of his drawings like this one?

It's really interesting seeing this. Does he have one for Vegeta? Any sketches of Trunks and Pan?

I know there are some Toriyama sketches of GT. But I don't remember where they were, sorry.

Here are some of the character designs he did, from the GT Perfect Files book (scan courtesy of Sentou Ryoku):

Note that the picture of Don Kia is a seperate thing from the Toriyama designs.

That's really the only drawing like that by Toriyama, which isn't even a character design, just a sketch way after the fact. It is from the introduction to the Dragon Book included with the GT Dragon Box where Toriyama was trying to mimic Nakatsuru Katsuyoshi's design of Super Saiya-jin 4 Son Goku. Nakatsuru Katsuyoshi did all of the character designs for GT, besides those that Toriyama provided, which were basically the designs that Herms posted above and an additional design for Giru. Toriyama also drew up some illustrations of Goku, Pan, Trunks, and Giru in space and on other planets. Other than that, Toriyama didn't provide any other designs, as far as I know.

Nakatsuru Katsuyoshi also did the character designs in late DragonBall Z (episodes 200-291). So, he was around a while before DragonBall GT, and is most known for his ability to closely mimic Toriyama's art style. He also provided all of the artwork for the Dragon Boxes, except for the Movie Dragon Box, which was drawn by Yamamuro Naoyoshi. Yamamuro Naoyoshi went on to do all of the cover artwork for the Dragon Box singles and the new Jump Anime Special DVD.

I scanned these from Daizenshuu 7 and the ones Saiyan-Professor posted are from the first GT Perfect File. I was going to scan them from the Perfect File, but the images kind of cover each other up a little and the ones in the daizenshuu are a little more complete.

I FUCKING LOVE his version of GT Vegeta!

As for Loli-Bra, one could argue she's a young teenager. Toriyama wasn't the on provided the birth year of Bra, whereas the manga can easily have her as being 7-9 at the 28th Budokai. Tack on 5 years and she'd be 12-14 in GT.

That and we all know Toriyama's a super-perv.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Yamamuro Naoyoshi also did the cover illustration for the first GT Perfect File. I'm not quite sure who did the cover illustration for the second GT Pefect File, because it's only credited to Toei Animation. I would assume it was Yamamuro Naoyoshi, because it seems like his style, but it really could have been anyone.

So, Toryama is responsible for Old-As-Fuck Krilin, Stupid-Hair-and-Moustache Vegeta and Whore Bra?
Wow... I'm surprised.

I find it funny that their god Toriyama created most of things that people blame Toei and just GT in general for. They scream that GT F-ed up Vegeta and Trunks etc. but Toei had no part in it Toriyama designed them.

I don't understand why people hate Trunks's design so much. It's just 17's outfit.

I'm afraid so, unless someone magically gets a hold of some unpublished GT material drawn by Toriyama. As far as we know, Toriyama was only involved with the initial planning stages of DragonBall GT. After that, it was all up to Toei to design the characters. In fact, we're not even too sure if Toriyama had anything to do with the initial story, just the character designs. For all we know, Toei approached him with the idea and asked for some initial character designs.

Maybe because it makes him look a little flamboyant, which is opposite of how he was at the end of Z. That's just a theory of course, since I really have no problem with his character design.

While I understand that people have most likely said this, I should note (like I said before) that as far as we know, Toriyama didn't create the initial story for GT, just the character designs. For all we know, Toei approached him with the idea and asked for some initial, and possibly very specific, character designs for the main characters. They could have asked for Vegeta to be like; we just don't know. Now I'm not trying to say that Toriyama's not at fault and that Toei is completely to blame for most of these things in GT, but we should remember that we're just assuming at this point and don't really know how much involvement Toriyama really had the in the series development.

I like trunks outfit. I just think he's kinda pale.

Every episode is like torture, It's just lacking its zing for some reason..
