Soba or Shu?

Post by Piccolo Daimao » Sat Jun 06, 2009 4:33 am

So, in the Emperor Pilaf Saga, one of Pilaf's henchmen is the dog called Soba. Or Shu?

Here's what I found from Dragon Ball Wiki on "Shu"'s page:

Originally known as Soba in the manga, but was renamed due to match the anime name given after Akira Toriyama forgot he had named him previously.

Should we just simply call him Soba then?

Well, if he's renamed Shu then... no.

"Due to match", huh?
And was he really named Shû by the TV series?

Anyway, the "shûmai" pun doesn't work if you call him "Soba". So it's a bit of a no-brainer.

Toriyama said in the DB Forever name pun guide that "'Soba' was probably just a name that I thoughtlessly gave him when I thought I hadn’t already given him one".

You just gotta love the DragonBall Wikia.

It gets better (well, figuratively): this clusterfuck immediately follows the real explanation for this "coincidence."

I love it: "Ginyu's resemblance to Sailor Moon may have been enhanced when he switched bodies with Bulma in the anime".

Clearly switching bodies with Bulma actually enhanced Ginyu's resemblance to Sailor Mercury. :P

Probably because it's complete nonsense.

DB Wikia: about as reliable as drawing random letters out of a scrabble bag.

So that's where the tite for DBAF came from!

We really have to get started on our version.

No real brainier there, Shu is his name because of the pun, as pointed out before

Returning to the original questions, in one of the Toriyama Ask Me Anything! Corners in the tankobon, Toriyama says that he had forgotten that he had forgotten that he had already named him "Soba", so he told Toei to call him "Shu". Viz keeps it as "Soba" to "stay true to Toriyama's original intentions".

Oh, that silly Toriyama...

Here from 10 years in the future (it's still 2019 here for 6 more minutes), working on the Pilaf Gang page.

Oh my god did you just ten-year-necropost...

(On the list of "best ways to tease wiki projects", "ten-year necropost" is actually a pretty good one.)
