Obviously... I'll help get you started. Each episode is roughly 2.2GB. Now add up the number of episodes... how many did you get? If you get a number less than 500, trying adding them up again. Now take that number and multiply it by 2.2GB. That should give you a rough estimate.

And I have a strange feeling you're asking only because you plan on downloading the entire series instead of buying, so you're curious how much space it'll take up on your computer... Why else would you want it in MKV form when you have the DVDs? But I could be totally wrong.

My eps run anywhere from 553 megs to 933 megs (depending on the complexity of the episode). I think I've finished about 80% of DBZ so far before I move onto DB. I don't see the need to have 291 encodes of the opening title song or the ending song taking up space, so I leave those out in my own encodes (as well as the next ep previews, but I leave in the recaps). I use h.264 for the video with a constant quality (so the bit rates vary per episode) and AAC for the audio and ASS subtitle format muxed into an mkv file. I don't bother with dual audio usually (there are one or two exceptions though).

Just to note, for a given display and depending on your own preferences, smaller file sizes are possible. I basically strive for a 'transparent' encode of my dragonboxes (film-grain and all). I figure the entire series will take up a a few hundred gigs, but with terabyte drives being reasonably priced... its not that big of a deal.

I'm basing this info from the R2 DBox but... how can 6 full episodes fit on a single DVD if 6 x 2.2 = 13.2 Gigs?

I'm not that silly, you can see how big those things are before you grab them, and I'm assuming they're not optimum quality for the size.
I'm thinking about how I can do a marathon. Just using the DVDs is the best option so far anyway.

I'm with Corey. In order to get frame-accurate shots and not worry about things being shifted around in color spaces and such, I rip my DVDs and then load them up into VirtualDub via AVIsynth.[/quote]

Could someone point me towards a tutorial on how to do all that stuff? I can't seem to figure it out...

Are you just seeking to capture a few screens? If so, VLC does the job very easily and you don't even have to rip your DVDs. You don't have to learn anything besides how to click Video -> Snapshot while playing the DVD.

But I'm now wanting to learn how to rip the DVD as well.

Hey, does anybody know how to get MPC to capture screenshots in their correct aspect size? Everything always comes out 720x480 and with a distorted size.

I thought it depends on the video renderer you are using. If you're using the newest MPC-HT, you should have the EVR Cust Pres set. But I'm pretty sure that one WON'T save it coorectly, one of the older, deprecated modes may. Otherwise,open it up in something like Irfanview to resize it.

And I also discovered that the colors when viewing something in MPC and a screencap from it look identical, so doing printscreen will work as well. Here's an example (this is from a VOB file of the Dragon Box that someone posted here a long time ago):

I use "Magic DVD Ripper", it gives you a ton of options on how you would like the DVD's ripping and its fairly fast at doing so.
