Question ("Go-kou" vs "Go-ku")

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Agreed. I generally just use whatever makes most sense (Goku, Bulma, etc.), or best follows with the name pun (Kuririn, Freeza, etc.)

"Goku" doesn't make sense. The last syllable of his name is stretched. Try saying "Goku" and then "Gokuu." The latter sounds correct.

I've also noticed in English, the first syllable in emphasized (GO-ku) while in Japanese the second is emphasized (go-KUU).

Well, even though the direct romanization is "Gokuu," for a general translation I'd say the second "u" is pretty unnecessary...

Agreed. It's not like we're going by straight Romanizations of the Japanese characters. Well at least not me.

It seems like people that use "Gokuu" and "Gokou" are just trying to be "1337"
Hell, I know every romanization for every character there is, but I stick with english names (well, VIZ names, that is)

It's not my fault that Buruma looks and sounds weird. XP

Even in the Japanese version, Buruma's shirt says "Bulma"...

And what happened to the topic title? o_0

The "u" in "colour" is unnecessary. :P

Seriously, Goku vs Gokuu really changes how it's pronounced. We're never all going to agree on one way so I say just drop it.

I pronounce Goku the same way I would pronounce Gokuu. There's really only one way to pronounce it.

We should all agree that Gokou is incorrect crap, though.

I never understood why they add a 'u' inbetween an o and r. What's the point?

Actually, every English speaking country spells it like that. America just had to go and screw it up again.

Oh yeah? Try "knife", "knee", and other words that I can't think of because I'm pressed for time.

The letter "C".

The most useless thing in the english language.

There is no word that uses a C that couldn't use a K or an S instead.

Why do we have a C, then?

Because english is, by it's nature, a fucked up language.

Anyway...onto the subject...

I figure the reason they romanize names inconsistently and totally incorrectly in Japan is because the Japanese really don't notice. I'm sure that Japanese students are taught the english alphabet, but the Japanese population as a whole really cannot tell if "Gokou" is an incorrect romanization. The same with "Klilyn", ect.

It's all in how you Romanize stuff. Some say Goku, some say Gokuu, some say Gokuh. It's similar to how some say o (with that circumflex thing or whatever over it), some say ou, and some say oh.
