Why do (some) fans hate DBGT?

Post by Ultimate DBZ » Sun Sep 06, 2009 1:05 am

Do they hate it because of the English Version, or the series itself. Do they hate the English Dub or Music, or do they hate how certain episodes were originally cut out, the Lost Episode Saga. Do they hate it because it ruins the DBZ Ending, because of the sotry plots, because they are a lot of things that don't make sense? Or do they hate it because it was made by Toei Animation and not Akira Toriyama, rather Akira just suppervised it. Does it not give fans that 'Dragon Ball feeling', do people think its bad because it was stupid? And is bad because Akira Toriyama didn't make it himself, or because it wasn't a Manga first, because it moved too fast. Do people like it because its fast, or not like SSJ4 Goku because its not like Super Saiyan 1, 2, or 3 at all.

The series itself.

It's fucking AWFUL. The story is awful. The music was good, though.

I like GT, although there were mistakes.
If they hadnt have rushed it and drew the characters correctly, it would have been better.

Like one scene at the tournament where four of the characters are licking lollipops, they ALL have the exact same eyes, facial feature. Its like they werent even trying.

I hate the series itself. Character designs suck, the story sucks, and the most of fans suck. Because of its kindergarten-style story, I gave up watching GT even when I was an early elementary school child. It's the fault of Aya Matsui, a talent-less screenwriter. She fucked up everything.

I don't hate GT.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

It gets weak a bit during the Baby stuff. Then it plummets into sheer stupidity with Super 17.

I think you almost answered your own question. Someone who dislikes GT probably feels that way because of 1 or more of the reasons you stated.

Personally, I don't hate GT. I can even enjoy watching it. But it doesn't feel like Dragon Ball to me. That said, the movies and filler don't really feel like Dragon Ball to me that often, either. I suppose I'm just too used to the manga alone.

I like a lot of GT's character designs, and I like a lot of its ideas. However, the execution often leaves a lot to be desired. The music is awesome, and the final ending montage always makes me smile; so overall it's kind of a mixed bag for me.

Why is this thread 'must view' lol?

Edit: Oh yes, and the strengths of the characters make no sense. Goku has trouble against giant worms, then fights someone who's apparently as strong or stronger than Buu without even resorting to SSJ3. Goku tells Goten and Trunks that Gotenks would be useless, but then asks them to give him their energy so he can save the day himself (wouldn't it at least have been more productive to become Gotenks, then give him the energy?) No one can so much as move Super 17, then SSJ Goku comes along and punches him across the planet for no adequately explained reason. In fact, Goku seems to be able to do anything Toei wants him to do.

Is it just me or does this same topic keep getting posted at least 2-3 times a month?

Worthless. Thread.

Though, I really like that image. Can we turn this thread into a discussion of the origins of that image?

I like GT's music, story concepts, new characters, and the lightheartedness of the Black Star Dragon Balls arc and the decently-handled action of the Baby arc.

I dislike GT's plotholes, mangling of the original characters, over-focus on Goku, and poor execution of good story concepts.

The goods outweigh the bads for me, and I can usually enjoy GT if I just don't think about it too much.

I really like GT and consider it a part of their story.

I probably wouldn't have watched GT in the first place until I found out the ending. In my opinion, GT's ending was the best of all three series.

Anyway, after I read about GT's ending I began to find out more about the series as a whole.

For me GT was great-it had a lot of character developments, but not all were good and not all were bad. GT was rushed, plus they added in stupid and unnecessary things, for instance Vegeta's moustache and the female-chasing Goten. But it had good story concepts, that would have turned out better if they had focused more on those concepts instead of other more comical factors.

The music, however, was great.

That would've been better, but not as much fun as DB/Z I guess.
By the way, rumors are that he is the very person who recommended Aya Matsui as the main writer.

Well, first of all, there was no reason for it. There was really nowhere else to go with Goku's story. It was enough already. Toriyama struggled to even get as far as he did and was obviously tired of doing it. At this point in the story, Goku had once again saved the world, possibly the universe and was now taking some time to train somebody new to be able to defend the Earth, as well as have some fun for a while. How would it turn out? It wasn't important. Knowing that life continued on was all the finality the series needed.

Second, since Toei decided to continue the story on their own, it became apparent that many of the staff are not very good writers. But as I said with the first point, what could they do?

Goku, at this point, was ultra-powerful. So what do they do? They depower him slightly. But depowering him is pointless, since now the fans would just get frustrated when Goku couldn't beat an opponent he would previous beat down in moments and when he did show his full power it then became, "This is boring, Goku is supposed to be slightly less powerful." It just didn't work as a plot device.

Next, the search for the Black Star Balls. Well, the existence of those things are a big plothole. You would think they would have come up before if they existed, and how did Pilaf even know about them? The journey across the universe to look for the Dragon Balls was exciting, though, returning DB to its roots. However, what percipitated the journey was lame, and since Goku went on the journey, the other characters had little room for growth. If it was Trunks and Goten, that would have been great. Even with Pan along for the ride. But like I said, Goku is just too powerful to be that great a character at this point, and any introducing of more powerful villains will just make people's eyes roll.

I really like the idea of treking across space looking for new Dragon Balls, but the way they did it was pure B.S. Not to mention that it soon turned into Dragon Ball Z, and the Dragon Ball search got pushed to the side again. So it became pointless afterwards, too.

It's just too inconsistent.

Baby? Not a bad idea. Even the evil dragons are sort of a cute idea. But the execution was lousy most of the time. Even when it was good, it was been there, done that.

I will give GT points for a good soundtrack and a beautiful ending, but watching it is a chore.

I don't hate the Japanese version of GT. The English version makes me want to vomit.

I don't exactly hate GT, I like some of the concepts, but they had really, really horrible execution. Goku becoming a Child again was good enough for the Black Star Dragonballs arc. Made it seem like Dragonball again, and gives it that Nostalgic feeling. After that, it got really old and useless. The idea of a new Super Saiyan form was pretty cool. I like the Design and the idea of giving them a tail made them seem more like Saiyans than just your normal fighter. The Super 17 arc was just boring. Plain and simple. The Shadow Dragons arc had the best idea (In my opinion) in Dragonball history. Have the very items that Goku and his friends have been using since day one turn against them after misusing them for so long. The Dragons could have been sooo much better, but the only "Good" Dragons that could of actually destroyed the Earth were Nouva, Eis, and Syn. The rest were fuckin' pussies. They didn't even try to kill Goku and Pan.

So yeah, I can stand watching GT, except for its inconsistencies, poorly executed stories, and boringness.
Next quest: Buy the Super: Broly and Super Hero Blurays, also Daima whenever that releases in the states. Also the Super Manga!

Fan of Dragon Ball Z and various other Anime since '98! ^^

That was actually more in-line with the end of the manga than what they did with Pan, in my opinion. Before the tournament at the very end of Z, an older Goten was complaining that he was missing a date because of Goku's training.

As for the opening image, here's a slightly bigger version I had. Someone else might still have an even higher quality copy

As long as its not the first 16 episodes I'm alright with watching it, and the non-action scenes and 'downtime' scenes are drawn badly.

If they could go bad and draw everyone right and take their time with the story mode, they had such potential to work with.

According to some other person's opinion on GT (not mine) He says this:"I actually enjoyed DragonBall GT because it had the mindless action of Dragon Ball Z mixed with the innocence and fun of Dragonball, It was a perfect mix of both of the previous shows. And the only real problem is the villains usually suck." <------ Not my opinion some other person.

And this has me curious. This seems like a very odd conflicting opinion of someone else that states that GT is completely like Dragonball, and then the another says it doesn't seem like Dragonball at all. So, what do you think Bussani, or anyone else?

Or maybe Bussani, you could explain why you thought Dragonball GT didn't feel like Dragonball to you.

Now for my opinion on Dragon Ball GT. I'll start out by saying I watched the Japanese version first. My first thoughts on the series, I loved the Bebi Arc. I thought the villain was cool and developed. After that, I didn't really like it anymore, I didn't like the Super 17 villain nor Final Omega Shenron villain at the end.

They didn't use the characters enough like they did in Dragonball Z. The storyline wasn't as epic and developed. They just ripped off DBZ and they didn't put anything in original in it. And it was mostly Goku that did everything. He went to another Super Saiya-jin level. And also they used fusion again. And at the very ending. They just did a Spirit Bomb, like they just ripped off DBZ's ending with no imagination whatsoever.

The only storyline that was creative was the Bebi Arc. And that was it.

Now for the English dub. Funimation's voice casting was horrible at times. They showed barely any emotion and the one liners were lame. At least the voice acting from Funimation when they did DBZ Sean Schemmel could emote. Show emotion in his voice. Even if the script wasn't original, at least when he did his own thing he put lots of emotions and power behind his words.

To me Dragonball Z was way more epic, and the storyline was way more developed and interesting. And all the characters had a part in it.

On a more personal note. I think I can create something more original to continue Dragonball Z than Toei could ever do. You can't keep doing what Dragonball Z did forever or it will get repetitive and stale. You got to take it in a unique direction. And no Dragonball AF - the fan stuff isn't original either.

Why don't I like GT...

One, nothing to do with Toriyama. I kind of have this... thing about respecting the original source/creator, and if the man says he's done he's done. Almost random people coming in and thinking they know the characters enough to make shit up and call it the real story on television... I'm not big on that. Especially when they do such a terrible job.

Two, the stories meander around inconsistently and collapse in on their own plot holes far too much of the time. Pilaf living, Son suddenly being a child with wildly inconsistent power levels, everything people have already mentioned, excetera on that point.

Three the art's just hideous most of the time. The squareness of it all with that plastic sheen where huge highlights on people's faces are paper white- seriously I understand stylization to a degree but they all just look ridiculous.

Four it's The Goku Show. What, we had other characters in this series? Naaaaah, forget them. Even that kid who was suppose to be the great successor- he's boring, let's just have him get the shit blown out of him twice and forget he exists again. I know the rest of the franchise does stuff like this but GT takes it to a new extreme.

Five, I like Piccolo. And what does Piccolo do in GT? Exactly. Die and end up in Hell. I festered about that for a looooong time before I found out that he ended up there for a reason besides the sins of the father, but it still burns in the back of your throat you know?

I can certainly try to explain, but I'm not sure I'll do a good job; it's hard to explain something that's just a feeling you get.

I don't disagree with your friend. The Black Star Dragon Ball saga is like Dragon Ball, and the fights are like Dragon Ball Z. That's originally what drew me to GT, actually.

However, something else just seems a bit off. The writing, the choreography, the pacing and how events lead into each other just doesn't feel right. It's to be expected, really, since it's not by the same author. It has lots of elements from DB and DBZ, but the actual feel I get from the show is different. Almost like it could be a completely different universe entirely, if it weren't for the characters and elements being there.

Anyway, everyone will have different opinions of something. Someone else might not feel the same vibe that I feel.

Toei did a terrible job of continuing Akira Toriyama's work. But that doesn't necessarily mean that if the Dragonball series isn't continued by Akira Toriyama's , then it's automatically going to be crap. If a smart person comes along that knows what they are doing , it's possible to make something more original and unique to continue were Dragonball Z left off. I strongly disagree with you there. I only say this because I have original ideas of my own on how to continue the series. But it's not a big deal, DBZ has satisfied me, and there are other Animes. It's just that I think it can be done, and it's possible.

I think everyone that hates GT can agree with Number 4. They failed to use the characters properly in the series. It was all about Goku.

And number five. I'm laughing my ass off, I knew you were going to bring up Piccolo because he ends up in Hell. That is a terrible way to conclude one of your favorite characters.

Bussani wrote:It has lots of elements from DB and DBZ, but the actual feel I get from the show is different. Almost like it could be a completely different universe entirely, if it weren't for the characters and elements being there.
So you can't explain it. Just vibes? It's alright. Actually the guy I was talking about isn't my friend. He was just some guy on youtube. In fact I disagree with this guy too. He likes Dragonball GT over DBZ. Not a big deal though. He is entitled to his opinion.
