I suppose because most of the characters in question ARE idiots, and are mainly just acting in-character. Especially the Saiyans, who tend to think with their muscles and make bad decisions if it means they'll get to fight more.Rocketman wrote:How so?

*pops a blood vessel* Maybe I should let Rocketman answer this one since the question was directed to you, but I've heard this excuse before way too many times (not only for dragonball but other shows and comics as well).SSj Kaboom wrote:I suppose because most of the characters in question ARE idiots, and are mainly just acting in-character. "They're all stupid so this excuse every major fault in the story." That is, and pardon my french, bullshit. The Buu saga made one big build up after another just so it could fall flat later. What was the point of SSj 3 if it wasn't strong enough to defeat Buu? What was the point Gotenks since all he did really was fuck around? What was the point the whole Mystic Gohan hype if he was going to be absorbed by Buu?! Gohan is not that stupid! I'm sure he learned his lesson after the whole Cell incident! Hell, he's probably the smartest character among the bunch.
If every character in DBZ were really honest to god THAT stupid then no one deserve to live. Not. One! Hell, Rocketman could probably explain this better than I.
Gotenks is a gag. Get a sense of humor, dudes.
SS3 and Gohan however, are pretty much... yeah, useless. SS3 could have possibly just been a parody of how the transformation had become(and for all intents and purposes, probably was from the start) an asspull, but I've got nothing to back that up.
And then there's that rumor Gohan was suppsoed to save the world, but Toriyama thought the character just wasn't suited for it. It goes in lnie with what happened, at least. Hell, Gohan sitting on his ass was probably planned out so Gotenks could have solo panel time, and he was never actually going to get a second chance at hero.

I gotta' agree with EVERYTHING Rocketman said, he pretty much nailed this one. The Boo saga plain sucks, there's no tension, no feeling of "oh shit we gotta' act NOW!" because the enemy simply isn't frightening, because he ahs absolutely no personality. He's pretty much a pink Broli.
The heroes make me fuckin' angry in this arc too.

I heard a rumour that Toriyama intended for Gohan to be the hero by killing Super Boo as planned before Boo absorbed Gotenks, Piccolo and himself. It's probably a rumor, but I for one would've been disappointed by that outcome. Not because I think that Gohan is unsuited for the hero role, he is, there's no reason for him not to have some glory other than his attitude towards fighting. Because it would've been disappointing to have an ending where the hero completely outclasses the villain in power, rather than a dramatic ending. But like I said, it's just a rumour, and I think it was Herms or someone else that said Toriyama only ever stated he intended to end the series after the Pilaf Saga (correct me if I'm wrong).B wrote:Gotenks is a gag. Then there's the fact that if Gohan was to kill Boo, they'd probably have to reuse the Cell Saga scenario and have Gohan achieve an even bigger power boost, and that just wouldn't work. 'Cos that'd be the only way to make it dramatic.

Well, the RoSaT came into play. And... I suppose it technically was more than one day, since it took 24 hours for Gohan's powerup, and there was time before and after.Hellspawn28 wrote:The one thing I don't like about the Buu saga that it's feel rush to me since I feel like they should have finish off Buu a bit longer then one day.
But I think it was so fast in-universe because it had to be; Buu could have done far more in one day than just destroy the Earth, as Kid Buu demonstrates.
If it had gone on longer, it would have had to have been an epic galaxy-spanning battle of unmatchable proportions...
... Buu went straight to the top instead.

The Freeza saga would have been a terrible place to end the story. There's absolutely no closure, Vegeta's alive ON EARTH with no Goku to keep him in line, Gohan didn't do anything important at all except maybe knock Radditz back, Vegeta probably would have killed everybody so no wishing back their friends which was the whole goal in the first place.
The Cell arc would have been a terrible place to end the story too because it was a terrible portion of the story.
Buu saga for the win. For life. Buu saga rocks my socks (and I haven't said that since I was, like, ten, so stuff you, pootyheads.)

Vegeta wouldn't have been revived if the series ended with the Freeza Saga.Innagadadavida wrote:The Freeza saga would have been a terrible place to end the story. You think they would have remembered to leave Vegeta behind in the heat of the moment? You know Dende made that wish right as Freeza was flying toward him.Rocketman wrote:Vegeta wouldn't have been revived if the series ended with the Freeza Saga.Innagadadavida wrote:The Freeza saga would have been a terrible place to end the story. I've never understood why people think that the Frieza saga ending with everyone dead besides Gohan would be a good ending. That's terrible and would HAVE to be something that would be followed up on.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Well, yeah: it's a shônen manga. You don't end a story like that.jjgp1112 wrote:I've never understood why people think that the Freeza saga ending with everyone dead besides Gohan would be a good ending. That's terrible and would HAVE to be something that would be followed up on.
But we're talking about American readers, so, y'know, dark is good.
