So what is the time gap between Z and GT?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

So what is the time gap between Z and GT?

Post by Amigo Ten » Wed Sep 30, 2009 4:17 pm

I've heard 5 or 10 mainly, sometimes 7. So I went over to Kanzentai to have a look around, but even that didn't help. I noticed on this page http://www.kanzentai.com/eps-dbgt.php the first arc is described as being 5 years after Z. But if you actually click on it, you end up here http://www.kanzentai.com/eps-dbgt.php?id=dark_db and it says 10 years.

Which is it?

A timeline in the Perfect Files seems to suggest five years.

Oh man, thanks for finding that mistake. I had no idea I had made that slip-up... Herms is gonna kill me! I'll have to fix that.

Anyway, the answer is 5 years. The 28th Tenkaichi Budoukai was in Age 784 and Goku, Trunks, and Pan depart from Earth in GT in Age 789.

As has been said, it's officially 5 years according to the GT Perfect Files, and I'm not aware of there being anything official saying otherwise. I'm not too sure where the idea of a 10 year gap comes from. I've heard it said that it's from the Funi dub, but I know it predates Funi, since I remember it being around long before Funi dubbed GT. I guess the fact that Pan and Bra look older than their official ages has given a lot of fuel to the confusion, but that doesn't explain where the specific figure of 10 years comes from.

Incidentally, GT starting in 789 means it begins 40 years after Goku and Bulma first meet, in 749.

I hate that five years. Neither Pan nor Bra look like they're in their pre-double digits.

Well, Bra might not be. But then I have no idea old she's supposed to be.

Is it really much different from how age is normally shown in DB? Gohan's only physically 11 at the Cell Games.

9 according to the Perfect Files (born in 780), vs Pan's 10.

Since we're kinda on that subject, don't the Perfect Files and one of the Daizenshuu have differing opinions on whether Pan or Bra was born first?

Not that I can remember.

Yeah, Daizenshuu 7's timeline lists Bra as being born in 780, a year after Pan, but her entry in the character dictionary says she's born in 778, making her a year older than Pan. The Perfect Files timeline is based on the D7 timeline, so it uses 780 as her birthyear.

Her torso's no bigger than her head. I have to wonder if she can even touch the top of her head with those arms.

Eh, she's taller than Goku was at 11. And when she and Goku stand next to each other in GT Pan is taller. I've heard people say she looks 13, when she doesn't, and I've heard people say she is a midget, when she's taller than Goku is in GT (and likely the original Dragon Ball.)

Now 15 year old Dragon Ball Goku... That is a midget.:P

I'd say she looks her age, whereas Bra on the other hand...

Well to be fair Goku was pretty short for his age in Dragonball until he hit that growth spurt at the end of the series. To me Pan looks about right for her age as far as the DB style goes but Bra? You mean to tell me a 9 year old dress like that?! What the hell were they thinking? Toriyama would never design his characters like...

Nevermind.

It's not even just that; she is is much taller than Pan is, especially if you go by the numbers that she is 1 year younger...

@Scarz: Toriyama designed GT Pan anyway.

Well, on the matter of Goku being so short at 15, compare a screenshot from when he fought Piccolo Daimao to one from the first story arc. He IS noticably taller and bigger. The reason why he is so small though is explained at the end of Z, right before the 28th World Tournament.

Bulma and Vegeta come to visit Goku, who comments on Bulma looking old. She says she can't help it that she isn't a space alien like Goku and Vegeta are who never seem to age. Vegeta says that Saiyans age much slower than humans do. That they evolved as a warring race, and they age slower and fight longer.

The explanation comes pretty late in the series, but it does cover all the bases. How Goku looks so dimunitive as a teenager (Even at 18 he is noticably still shorter than everyone else until around the mid-Z series), how later on, Goku and Vegeta still look young when they reach over 40 years old. (Nappa was 52 or so when he and Vegeta first came to earth, and he didn't really look that old.)

It all makes sense about the Saiyans and age/size differences, and I suppose Krillin being so small early on makes sense because even as an adult he is a very short man. If anyone has any non-GT inconsistancies beyond that though, and you might have me stumped.

The GT ones I always just attributed to "Feh, it's GT, half of it makes no sense anyway."

Technically Saiyans live as long as humans, but stay in their youth/prime for longer. I don't know if that means they take longer to grow up, too, but like you say, it's as good an explanation as any for Goku's delayed growth spurt.

Dragon Ball isn't exactly known for it's photo realistic depictions of human anatomy. Goku's head in volume 1 is just as large as his torso, Brolly's head is tiny when compared to his gigantic muscular upper body and the list just goes on.

That aside, how old is Goku at the end of GT, right after the Goku Jr. episode?

Gah, Bra being 9 in GT is just sooooo hard for me to swallow.

1. Guys are HITTING ON HER
2. She's driving a car!!
3. She's just as tall as all the adult females!!

Image

Oh my, just look how short Pan is when you compare her to Bra
