What? How can they be the same? If they're the same, then either there is no subtitle track that translates the episode titles for dub watchers, or there's subtitles during the ENTIRE episode for dub watchers. Neither make sense...
If it's what I think it is, one subtitle track is for all of the in-episode Japanese script which is then translated. So, if a sign is in Japanese and is prominently featured on the screen, it will appear in the screen as, for example: [Orange Star High School]. Similar examples are found on the Dragon Ball season sets.

As these subtitles show up independent of the dialogue subtitles, it counts as two subtitle tracks.

I did a splitscreen comparison:

Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Best Buy (Canada) just confirmed that the Dragon Box is going to be on sale for $57.99 plus tax. So it sounds like a good deal at that price. I might consider about buying this boxset.

I'm not reading every page, just posts here and there (and looking for good screen shot comparisons). I don't own the thing either as I have the imports, but i don't see any mention of the "film grain."

The screen shots posted look just as "grainy" as my imports, but out of 34 pages of posts, no one seems to think anything of it. Previously, DBox used to be criticized for it. I've always though it was a non-issue personally - more detail is better, getting rid of grain will get rid of detail.

But why don't we see the complaints now?

I think people are just happy we have a nice release that's in fullscreen and isn't DVNR'd to hell.

At least I am. :P

Also, I dunno why, but I think I'll put up some comparisons of the Funi Dragon Box, and the UUE's. Gimme a few minutes.

I remember a lot of, "Grain is there for detail. Smoothing out grain removes detail. Detail is good. Grain is good." I don't remember any complaints on DaizEX about grain.

Yes please, I would like to see the some differences. Also I'm willing to post some screen caps of the DBox as well, all I would need is the episode number and the scene wanted. :)

I think Tom Dubois of "The Boondocks" said it best for me when FUNimation announced the release of the domestic Dragonbox, after buying all of the Season Sets: "MOTHERFUCK!!! SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT, PRICKS, SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIIIIIIIT!"

I have the first UUE volume and I'll probably post some caps from the first 3 episodes for comparison.

Also, on a funny note, I showed my brother the comparisons I did a few pages ago and he said the remastered version looks better because even though it's blurry, the Dragon Box is grainy and "really fucking pink"

Similar responses from my side of the world.

I showed them screencaps from the Dragon Box, and they say:

Yes, because we all know Dragon Ball Z is an American cartoon and Japan has no say whatsoever. :P

Here are a bunch of UUC screencaps. All were taken in MPC-HC and resized in GIMP.

Even with the explanation about the remastering of the Dragon Box and telling them that the colors were like that when it was aired on TV in Japan and FUNimation's colores are the wrong ones...

They still insest on their opinion and telling me that the Blu-Ray is far supiriour and their's no big difference between the versions and the most craziest answer:

"Quality is about the aspect ratio, and nothing else!!"

Yeah... ignore the picture and the colors, 1080*1920p = instant perfection...!!

Ahhh, memories... How disappointed I was when I popped in that disc expecting a nice juicy steak and instead got roadkill possum.

Why would you resize those screenshots in GIMP? You're not getting clean shots if you downscale them--that's going to take away detail, which I imagine is the entire point of showcasing those particular scenes.

Not going to debate the accuracy of FUNimation's colors since I know they're not, but do we really know that the Dragon Box is exactly how things looked during the original airing of the series? I recall kei17 had adamantly argued against this notion, citing a comparison between the original animation cels and the VHS releases; he argued that the VHS releases were more accurate to the original airing than the Dragon Boxes ever were.

I know the Dragon Box is the best footage we have out of all the available choices, but I'm not necessarily convinced that it's the best representation of the series as it was originally meant to be seen.

In regards to grain, I was never really that fond of it, myself; I consider it a necessary tradeoff to get the best line quality and such of the footage that s available. Yeah, it's kind of shit, but it's better than everything being blurred to hell and actually destroying detail from the original film. That's not worth the colors being a bit flatter in my opinion.

The caps were originally 720x480, so I resized it to 640x480 by going to scale image and then pressing the little lock button to keep it from forcing the same aspect ratio so that I could just change the width.
