Viz Changes
Up until recently I had access to volumes 13-19 only of the Dragonball manga (29-35?) but yesterday I was able to snag 25 and 26 for five bucks total(the store I went to was going out of business so everything was 60+% off). As I read though the manga I noticed a lot changes. My first issue was with the fact that Gotenks' middle finger was censored at one point during his fight with Buu. I wasn't expecting this because in the previous books I own there wasn't much censorship(if any at all) and we all know about the lack of censorship in the original books thanks to the incident in Maryland. So why did viz decide to suddenly censor this scene in the book?
The second thing that caught me of guard were some of the name changes. I was under the impression that Viz stuck to Mr. Satan instead of Hercule. However though out both books he is only known as Hercule. Then there is the whole Vegerot thing. Where did that come from and if they decided to use Funimation's Hercule then why didn't they actually use Vegetto?
These changes weren't bad they just caught me off guard. Overall I thought the volumes were great and hysterically funny as well.

Yea, basically after the Freeza story, the censorship police pulled over the DragonBall manga. It (for the most part) goes back to parents getting mad at Goku's exposed penis in a manga being sold at Toys R Us.My first issue was with the fact that Gotenks' middle finger was censored at one point during his fight with Buu.

So... A lot of changes. One finger and two name changes?SparkyPantsMcGee wrote:Up until recently I had access to volumes 13-19 only of the Dragonball manga (29-35?) but yesterday I was able to snag 25 and 26 for five bucks total(the store I went to was going out of business so everything was 60+% off). Hey, I agree that these things are totally unnecessary and somewhat ridiculous.
But is there a lot of changes? No. Is it important? Not really...
In terms of censorship I have a lot more trouble with Kai`s censorship of Goku`s fatal wound than anything that Viz did recently, frankly (namelly Vizbig level of censorship).

Re: Viz Changes
I'm sorry, I should have said a lot more changes than the books I already had. honestly I don't find it bothersome just a bit odd since the earlier DB mangas didn't have much censorship.
Really? I only own the Cell arc outside of these new volumes and I didn't catch any of the censorship. In fact, when I first bought them I was impressed at the fact that they stayed unedited.Tanooki Kuribo wrote:

Re: Viz Changes
Well yea but why didn't they stick to Vegetto? I was under the impression that "Vegetto" was the actual name that Toriyama created so why didn't they stick to it? I mean they used Hercule for(what I'm assuming is) continuity with Funimation names so why not use the real name that was not only in the original, but also the Funimation too?Rocketman wrote:Vegeta plus Kakarot, obviously.SparkyPantsMcGee wrote:Then there is the whole Vegerot thing. Also... I think the H-word filter is HILARIOUS!

Re: Viz Changes
Because Vegetto is Vegeta plus kakarotto.SparkyPantsMcGee wrote:

Since they translated kakarotto into kakarot to be more "familiar" to an english audience, it would be weird to have Vegetto instead of Vegerot, which would be the fusion of the two names.
As for Mr. Satan, well, obviously they changed it because of religious implications. Unnecessary, but whatever...
The finger is the most ridiculous censorship in there... But I can live with it.

Re: Viz Changes
That was weird of them to keep Tenshinhan and Kuririn but not Kakarotto, but oh well. I get the reasoning behind the name but I still think it sounds gross.

Re: Viz Changes
Funi subs have always said 'Kakarot' aswell. It's the best way to get the 'carrot' pun I think.
Re: Viz Changes
The -to on the end is superfluous. As I understand it, it's a result of there being no symbol in the Japanese alphabet that ends in a "t", but they do have "ta", "te", "to", etc. So writing it as Kakarrot in English is a valid way of translating it, just like Kibito becoming Kibit. But then, for the fusion name to make sense, he couldn't be Vegetto.
Viz gets points for consistency there, but I don't really like the name Vegerot myself, so...mixed bag.
Oh, and I've said it in plenty of threads before, but Viz's censorship is inconsistent from printing to printing. Unless you go by VizBigs versions, which have slightly more editing than some copies, slightly less than others, but are at least consistent enough so that you know what you're getting.

Re: Viz Changes
Well, there's something to be said for the trailing 'to'. Vegetto is written as ベジット - you see the small ッ (tsu) there is a sokuon (促音) that indicates a different stress on the following kana (indicated in romanization with a doubling of the consonant). It's mainly a pronunciation thing, but obviously it's important enough of a change to be used as Goku's only contribution to the name.

Re: Viz Changes
This reminds me of how, back on Planet Namek's forum, some people would compensate by calling Vegetto "Vegit" or "Veget." Being a dubbie that hadn't seen past the first 53 edited episodes at this point, that always confused me.
Anywho, yes... there are changes in the VIZ manga that are unnecessary and have driven some people to the point of boycott. Despite such, I can forgive them at the moment since they get much more of the dialog right than FUNi's dub so the story goes a lot more smoothly.
Having the Japanese manga to fall back on helps, too.

Re: Viz Changes
I'm fairly sure that some of the early Irwin figures under FUNimation's lead wrote the name as "Vegit"/"Veget". One of our toy gurus may be a better reference for that than I am, though.Kendamu wrote:This reminds me of how, back on Planet Namek's forum, some people would compensate by calling Vegetto "Vegit" or "Veget." What pains me is how it was written as "Vegetto" back in 1997 for Final Bout, and we've never gotten it since

FUNi didn't come up with 'Hercule'.Where did that come from and if they decided to use Funimation's (the H-word) then why didn't they actually use Vegetto?
Re: Viz Changes
Then who did? I know old toys had "Mr. Satan" under his name on the back of the box (toys that were out when Freeza was airing). I don't know how the manga was released in the States, so maybe that came first, but from what I recall, the manga, at least then, was touted as being the accurate version. I imagine they would have stuck with Mr. Satan around then. The first use of the so-called "H-word" would have been in Fall of 2000 when the Cell episodes aired on American television (early November, specifically). I can't think of anything earlier than that.Savage68 wrote:FUNi didn't come up with '(the H-word)'.Where did that come from and if they decided to use Funimation's (the H-word) then why didn't they actually use Vegetto?

Re: Viz Changes
The French version. Piccolo was renamed to something along the lines of "Satan Petit Coeur", I think, so when they got to "Mr. Satan"... well... name change!xzero wrote:Then who did? Re: Viz Changes
I never knew that. When did the French version air in comparison to the American version. Also, though I guess it's a fairly basic assumption, is that definitely where Funimation got the name from?

Re: Viz Changes
In the Vizbig versions of the Dragon Ball manga, they censored out Goku's penis and various other things. I posted a video on Youtube showing some of these changes in volume 1.
