Did the Anime Forget Zarbon's Line?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Did the Anime Forget Zarbon's Line?

Post by Gaffer Tape » Tue Feb 09, 2010 9:37 pm

I remember when season 3 of the dub first came out, and Vegeta snarkily tells Freeza to transform and that his "loving minion Zarbon blurted it out." At the ripe old age of 13, I was quite annoyed by this because I knew the first two dub seasons by heart at that point and knew that Zarbon never said anything of the sort to Vegeta during their fight. I figured this was some annoying retcon.

Years later, I read the manga (albeit the Viz translation) and distinctly remember Zarbon, with a shit-eating grin, telling Vegeta that Freeza could transform, and Vegeta looking like he was about to lose his shit. So at that point, I assumed that the dub just screwed up and left out that line.

Now I'm watching Dragon Box 2, and I swear I can't find that moment anywhere! So now I admit I'm really confused. My only explanation is that the anime simply forgot to animate that moment. Can anyone confirm this for me?

Yes, they left that line out for whatever reason.

Lets just say it happened off screen.

When could they have met up to chat off-screen? What did they just quit beating the crap out of each other to take a breather and exchange menacing threats...? (It's not like DBZ isn't famous for that or anything...)

Perhaps it could've been scripted, but not included for some reason. Know something similar happened in YYH, and one of the dvds has the scripted but not animated part that was in the manga.

Sadly, if memory serves, they didn't even fix this in Kai. It was always one of the more annoying plot-holes to me.

Really? I don`t think that would be that hard to do. Oh well...

But I am correct in saying that the line was in the manga?

In that case, Cory, I wouldn't really call it a plot hole of Dragon Ball per se, but a hiccup of the adapation. Quite a shame, though, especially since Kai didn't correct it.

Thanks for confirming that for me. I actually went back and watched the episode at double speed just to make sure I wasn't going crazy! But Horikawa sounds awesome at high pitch 2x speed!

Yeah, they did leave that line out of Kai, for whatever reason. Which is a shame. It's one thing I still hold against the series, those cheap bastards.

Fair enough. Still, for someone who saw the anime first (like...well, me) it comes across as a plot-hole at the initial encounter.

And 'Cory'? Come on dude, it's in my sig. All bold and italicized and everything... ;p

Gaaaah! As soon as I posted that, I thought, "Wait. There's an 'e' there, isn't there?" But you beat me to the punch. One of the disadvantages of "knowing" you primarily through an audio medium long before I actively began participating on the message boards. Whoops.
