I guess IGN forgets this series was made in 1989.

Anyone else have a hard time figuring out what exactly he didn't like about the set? The only negative aspects of the audio were, "the less popular... US music track is not a choice... we don't think that this will be much of an issue" and "While we would have liked a more powerful Japanese track, you can't really complain". How does that get a seven? And I can understand that he didn't like the soft-grainy picture, but when talking about the packaging being "where you're getting your money's worth... packaging for this set is phenomenal. As if the packaging wasn't enough... the set comes with a hardcover booklet which features art, episode descriptions, character profiles and other such notes and factoids. " Clearly 4/10 for that.

What the hell?

It only cost £35 (roughly $54) which really isn't to bad considering its an import

We've been over the grain thing before, grain is part of the image. If the grain is removed, the image loses clarity.

Grain in and of itself isn't annoying. It can be annoying on DVD because it seems to make almost unavoidable compression artifacts.

Grain on Blu-ray is beautiful. Just like watching a movie film. Check out Wings of Honneamise or Escaflowne the movie on Blu-ray to see for yourself.

If it's an old show, it's understandable and I don't care.

And we all know Dragon Ball is an old show from the 1980s and not a digitally made 16:9 show with super duper effects from the late 2000s.

I like grain... and dirty celluloids and all of that stuff, gives it a charm that new animation doesn't have.

If there were several generations of dupe grain, that would be one thing and worth complaining about, but I can't say I've ever watched the Dbox and thought, "Wow, there's distracting grain here."

This. And we saw what happened when they tried blurring and editing out the grain in the remastered sets for Z and GT.

Film grain is the random optical texture of processed photographic film due to the presence of small grains of a metallic silver developed from silver halide that have received enough photons.

Simply put, the "grain" is the physical film texture that is visible in video or still images. The reason you see it is because it's there. By itself grain is not important (though because it's very common with physical film it can give an 'atmosphere' or 'authenticity' to the video/photo, which is why it's is more often synthesized nowadays) but removing it would mean losing image clarity and detail.

What most people who complain about grain don't know is that when they don't like "grain", it's not necessary grain they're talking about. Sometimes they may be talking about accumulated dirt on older film, or dupe (duplicate) grain from multi-generational prints. That's why really, really old movies look so "grainy": because they're working from multi-multi-multi-generational film prints that have several layers of grain and dirt permanently contained in the image. Another boon for the Dragon Boxes: since they were made from original prints, they only contain the amount of grain they're supposed to, and it also means that imperfections can be corrected, as dirt isn't an inherent part of the image.

Like the first set, I'm loving the second one. Currently watching Episode 50 on my 26' LCD using my PS2 and am having a KI BLAST! On a big screen it definitely looks a bit outdated and old [which is only natural], but if you watch from a good distance it's ok. I really haven't seen DBZ in such an awesome quality to tell the truth.

Also, the Season Sets comparisons posted here were great! I really wanna buy one of them, just to see how ugly and cropped they are in motion. What a shame really.

P.S: Did anyone else notice that Freeza's fingernails on the cover of the Dragonbook were not coloured? It kinda disappointed me. :/ But it's nothing to die for I guess.

I've waited forever to get to disk 3 because I was getting my TV Upgraded, yep. I upgraded to a 60' monster^^ I swear there's no visible back lighting.. The black is as deep as it appears off and that's black!
Played COD Modern warfare 2 and it was awesome.

Back on topic now.

Grain is there as it's a part of a film can't remove it unless you really don't care "AT ALL"
You would never notice grain on a CRT Tube set but with modern day HDTVs it's extremely noticable so make sure you're watching these that have some sort of upscaler like a PS3 or a Sony Blue-ray player.

ANN's review for Dragon Box 2 is here. (It's not me this time... I don't even have DBox 2 yet!)
