I meant the dialogue, not the voice. Make him sound cutesy, cause hey, he is, but make him talk NORMAL. Like Riikuum, if they insist on a dumb-ass type voice, at least don't make him talk like a retard.

The Mexdub did give Riikuum the typical big musclehead dumbass voice, but kept his playful but deadly attitude and normal-ish dialogue.

As for Freeza, we'll have to see how the acting goes, but again, we already the voice is pretty much the same. I'm just confused as to why Linda didn't think she could pull it off, is she not as seasoned a VA like the rest of the Funi cast that's also been doing the same dub for 11 years?

I dont think Young was used to talking as fast or what-have-you in that voice so she hadnt had the 11 years to do the voice in the way they were taking it now.

Guess who appears to have red lipstick, a white face, and was voiced very smooth, cold, collected, calculated, and powerfully? That's an ancient spirit named Koh, and that's the kind of casting I'd expect for a male Freeza. OK, so it's not entirely accurate for the character of Freeza, but I can see what the Avatar (casting) directors were going for -- they understood the character, which is more than just its appearance. It's got nothing to do with a "male" or "female" tone of the voice, though in this particular case it's (obviously) quite deep and "manly", if you will. Was looking for some clips to post up, but didn't see any on YouTube. Ended up just encoding one of my own -- check it (XviD, 6.2 MB).

Don't really have a whole lot to add to the conversation with this example. It's relevant, though, right...? Very much looking forward to this...!
If that was actually the new Freeza, I'd shit my pants in fear and joy.

Well, that's because we haven't heard enough to judge the acting. The voice seems pretty clear. I never even said I thought right off the bat it was bad. I'm just flabbergasted because IT'S THE SAME! So my question is, "If you're going to do the exact same thing, why did you bother changing the actor in the first place?" And I'm forced to think they were just building hype. "We have a new Freeza! Watch our show!"
Well...believe it or not, I have a pitifully small amount of hope that it's not the same voice. It could be the one line. Notice how towards the end of the sentence his voice gets a lot lower? Maybe that's how he usually talks...I dunno. It definitely seems more than likely that this won't be an English Ryusei Nakao, but it still might be too soon to say it's the same voice as Young's. Now, to be fair, my initial reaction was the same as yours (as shown by my posts). I've just been listening to that one clip over and over again though and think that maybe there's more to this than meets the eye. Then again, as I noted in my first response post, it's kind of discouraging that I have to say that at all.

Since you brought Avatar up......NOTHING against Avatar itself, but does that movie piss anyone else off? Not that the movie looks like its going to be that awesome, but that it got THAT level of treatment and accuracy for a semi new amircan made ''anime'' but DB that has been around for 25 years get the terrible DBE treatment?

Eh, that's not really on-topic at all. Barely even a tiny thread of a connection...

Fair enough, ignore that question then.

Just for knowing's sake, can we get a clear YES or NO as to who likes or dislikes the new Frieza?

YES.

Sounds like a cross between Ocean and Japanese dub.

I'm not picky... As long as it fits the overall tone and nature of the character, I'm satisfied.

So with just that one line:

Yes.

I think Tom Dubois of "The Boondocks" said it best for me when FUNimation announced the release of the domestic Dragonbox, after buying all of the Season Sets: "MOTHERFUCK!!! SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT, PRICKS, SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIIIIIIIT!"

It sounds like a man trying to sound like a woman, exactly as I thought it would. Argh.

I like the one line/laugh I heard. That...and I didn't mind the Ocean Freeza, either. He just got some weird lines to act out...

Hearing that small amount dialogue, I'm kinda wishing they had just kept Linda (if nothing more than to spare her feelings, even though I did genuinely like her voice). I'm still waiting to hear more, though, since Bulma's and Gohan's new voices pleasantly surprised me.

I would say "yes," because it's not bad, just not all that new.

And yikes, those were some awkward blue briefs.

That new Freeza voice sounds like a more creepy and chilling version of Linda Young's Freeza. Still sounds a bit feminine and not a lot like his Japanese voice, but I'm alright with that. Way to go FUNi!

Fact is, all I heard from that line was Pauline Newstone. Literally, I was geared up to hear something new and instead heard something incredibly old. The irony didn't go over my head and I burst out laughing.

I don't have anything seriously against Newstone's rendition but neither am I in love with it. That has a lot to do with the fact that she never really got a chance to do some of Freeza's best moments. Maybe Ayres can do something great with the character.

But I think the problem is that this voice makes Freeza sound weaselly. Like a Wormtongue kind of character who hisses and slithers into the shadows. The thing about Freeza is that he's a magnificent bastard. That's his schtick. He shouldn't really sound like he crawled out of a crack in the wall. It sounds a lot like FUNi's Imperfect Cell which, while appropriate for Cell being a lizard bug thing that did sort of crawl out from under a rock, doesn't work for a magnificent bastard who's the ultimate ruler of the universe and bored with his powers.

Adam West sounds near enough to retarded. :) Check out Family Guy sometime to see proof. :D

Its like they PLANNED this episode to be on a Thursday so we will have to wait til Monday to hear more Frieza. What are they going to do in like 2 months when we catch up to the JP broadcast? At what episode do you think they will hit re-runs?

At this point in the show we don't KNOW most of those things about him [refering to the time line, not it being 20 years old] so I'm alright with the smaller sounding of his voice for the time being.
