Interview With Justin Chatwin!

Post by Goku100xKamehameha » Sat Jun 19, 2010 3:16 am

This a phone interview with Justin Chatwin from an Indonesian Magazine call "XY Kids!" Dragon Ball Special Edition, the interview is in Indonesia! so I'm gonna translate it!
J:"Hello..?"
X:"Justin? Hello too. how are you?"
J:"Good. and you?"
X:"Good too... Justin, I wanna ask something. What's your feeling involved in Dragon Ball:Evolution?"
J:"Wow, I'm so happy. because I'm got a role of an very incredible character in there. this character is so important, it have a lot of fans in the whole world. especially from the comic and the series. so I'm so honored.."
X:"Wow, happy to hear that. but the process not easy, right?"
J:"Yeah, of course. I got that role trough many process. previously after I got the script, then I read it, I feel it's gonna hard to got the role. you know, this movie is based from a "best seller" comic. so I feel intimidated at the time. because my friends are the fans of Dragon Ball. but later I feel challenge to play the role!"
X:"Oh, yeah? why?"
J:"Dragon Ball is already well known in the whole world, even the TV series already being broadcast for about 400 episodes. it's about an adventure that the hero already legendary. it's not very different with Skywalker in Star Wars. that's why we are so very careful to make it into a movie. Scenes, and picking the actors and actress is quite hard."
X:"Wow.. what do you prepare before shooting? what do you do, Justin?"
J:"A lot, of course! because I'm got a role of an incredible fighter. so I have to give the image that looks exactly like the real character, including the looks. I studied make-up and styling hair like Goku's. it's have to be look the same, although it's impossible to look the same like on the series."
X:"Then?"
J:"When five months of shooting, I'm always going to the gym for exercise, eat foods that have protein. other than that, I also studying character detail, I also learning martial arts. every day, for 5 weeks learning martial arts. so interesting!"
X:"What kind of martial arts do you learn?"
J:"A lot. at least 5 martial arts, that is Kung Fu, Cappoera, Karate, Kickboxing, and Jiojitsu. all of that is combine so it can be an interesting fighting moves for the movie."
X:"Justin, before shooting, do you read the comic?"
J:"Yeah, I read the comic. I also watch the series. you know, I start watching Dragon Ball since I was little. from Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Z, and other."
X:"What's the most interesting scene during shooting?"
J:"I think, when Goku using Kamehameha technique. you know Kamehameha, right? it's the most coolest technique for me. that's why I really like doing it!"
X:"If you have a technique like Goku's, what do you want?"
J:"Haha.. I want to fly! it's really interesting for me, of course beside having Kamehameha technique."
X:"In your opinion, what's the character Goku like?"
J:"I really like Goku character. I think, Goku is a symbol of good. a true fighter model that always try to save earth."
X:"Oh, yeah Justin, besides busy promoting the movie, what do you do?"
J:"I usually spare time to do my hobbies. if I have time, I like to do Kiteboarding, Snowboarding, and of course Going out.."
X:"Wow, so fun.. Okay. Thank for calling.."
"Good Bye, Justin"
J:"Your welcome"
"Bye.."
That's the interview! Justin call XY Kids!

Nice interview. Do you mind to post a scan of the page so we know it's authentic?

I would say that Justin is so full of crap here. He didn't look a bit like Goku at all, except for his Gi.
When Goku is supposed to come from Asia, they can't cast someone from the west as the actor.
Imagine "My Name is Khan" with someone Chinese, or Brad Pitt. *Pukes*

I don't know about you, but Goku looks as white as the driven snow to me. I'd actually be MORE off-put if they got an actor of Asian descent to play him. Come to think of it, nearly all of the characters strike me as Caucasian.

Why do you have to bring Chinese to the topic and when you say Brad Pitt why don't you just say American?

I brought Chinese to the topic because of that they are people from one of the Asian countries, you know, China. It's called an example. And I used Brad Pitt instead of American just because of that everyone knows who he is.
Or do you mean that it's bad that I bring the word "Chinese" to this topic, as if it's something bad?

But, okay, change "Chinese" in my post into whichever of these fine Chinese actors that fall into your taste: Jackie Chan/Jet Li/Chow Yun-fat/Andy Lau.
Pick your favorite and please, don't mind my request of a scan at all.

I'm not speaking about skin color here (because of that I don't want an inflamed debate) , but mainly the fact that the story is played in an Asian environment, and that Tenshinhan, Yajirobe and Yamcha clearly are of Asian heritage (clothing, eyes and fighting styles). Grandpa Gohan could aswell be throughout Asian.
The only ones I can think of not having very obvious Asian features may be the Saiya-jins.
But I still see them as Asian, as I said before, because of that at least in the beginning of Dragonball you could see an Asian environment. We have Kung-fu users (Goku, Kuririn, Yamcha) [China ect.] and even a Samurai (Yajirobe) [Japan].
West City may be more like a Western environment, though, so Bulma may be non-Asian.

But what does Goku's upbringing and lifestyle got to do with his race? Just because he was brought up in that environment doesn't mean he's Asian, especially considering he's an alien who was adopted. It really could go either way so having a Caucasian isn't necessarily incorrect.

You need to read my posts more carefully. :P

But my opinion tells that he should be Asian anyways. It's my perception, after all, since we didn't know that he was adopted in the beginning of Dragonball, right?

I did read carefully but what does that even mean? What relevance did that statement about the Saiyans even have with my question? Not to mention you proceeded to say that you still think they're Asian anyway(which is confusing considering you just said they don't seem to have any noticeable Asian features).

And your reason that Goku should have been played by an Asian in your previous post leads me back to my first question, what does Goku, an adopted alien boy's upbringing and the environment he grew up in got to do with his race?

Because humanoid aliens from other planets come from Asia. What does an "Asian environment" have to do with a character's race? If Superman landed in Mexico, should he have been Hispanic?

Ignoring the fact that the Dragon World doesn't have continents, Toriyama pretty much drew most of his characters the same way (except for black people, but we won't go into that...), with no real distinction between races. Plus, there are so many things wrong with the "We didn't know he was adopted" argument...

1. No one who knew Goku ever met Gohan, so they wouldn't know what race he was.
2. Again, no real race distinction either in drawing style or in-universe, so that shouldn't even enter into the equation.
3. We find out that Goku was adopted in the first volume. That mystery didn't last long, did it? :P

Or, y'know, we could accept that Dragon Ball was written and drawn by an Asian man, and that there's gonna be at least a litte Asian influence somewhere.
Godo wrote:If you are going to partake in a discussion/debate, make sure to read the thread first.
Last I heard, this thread was about a Justin Chatwin interview, and you turned it into a race discussion for no real reason. I hate you. :cry:Just kidding, I love you. But I do hate it when race/social class/our family/rank/jobs/prison comes between us.

The Tori-bot wrote: 1. No one who knew Goku ever met Gohan, so they wouldn't know what race he was.
Yeah, and no one had a thought even close to that Goku wasn't from the area he came from.
The Tori-bot wrote: 2. Again, no real race distinction either in drawing style or in-universe, so that shouldn't even enter into the equation.
So Yamcha and Tenshinhan's eyes are just drawn like that because of that Toriyama did it for the lulz?
Especially Tenshinhan is a good example, looking Asian, and practicing the Crane style of Kung Fu.
But hey, I guess that point isn't valid, not with there being black people there too.
Living in different areas of the world have given humans different phenotypes, alas, they look different.
Just because of that his world is a large continent, there being people that look like they are from different races is proof enough that there are groups of people living exclusively in different parts of that continent.
And then we have Nam and his village, who all have similar skin tone and also similar build.
So having a thought about race distinction is not that far fetched.
The Tori-bot wrote: 3. We find out that Goku was adopted in the first volume. That mystery didn't last long, did it? :P
¨
Yeah. We did. But the most plausible thought should be that he is from that particular area of the continent. I doubt that anyone thought of him being dropped from a plane nor coming from outer space to be found in the forest.
Which is why no one really thought of him being adopted, since he looked like everyone in that area.

Thinking of that the story started with Journey to the West as an inspiration, it shouldn't be that unreasonable to think that Son Goku was initially thought of having an Asian heritage. Unless Toriyama thought of adding a twist into it and do a "Journey to the East", which I don't think it's implied.
So initially, all the characters we meet until Goku goes to the Desert City (with the Boss Rabbit) can be thought of being Asian.
After that, the races more and less mix, but Goku was from the beginning thought of being Asian.

You see what this movie has done? Caused pointless, stupid arguments. Dragon Ball: Evolution was a big mistake. End of story.

I'm gonna sound really mean now but, why is such a topic still relevant? This adds nothing new to the whole DragonBall Evolution discussion as it reveals nothing new. We all knew this stuff already and this was repeated in thousands of other interviews with Chatwin.

Exactly. Just Chatwin saying the same thing he said in every single interview for the movie. It sucked. He's full of crap. Besides, Goku is an alien, he isn't asian, white or anything. He's Saiyan. So, drop it.

Now now, this is a little harsh.

Anyway, what is true is this is kind of a meaningless topic. All things we've heard before, more than a year ago.
