Tell Me About Funimation's Dragon Ball GT Dub
Tell Me About Funimation's Dragon Ball GT Dub
I've only seen a clip or two of it and I can barely sit through all 64 episodes with a voice cast I prefer so I'm looking for your help Daizex. Is the script accurate? How is the voice work? Any personal comments you have on it? I'm kind of hoping it's good so the entire series will have a accurate dub with Kai rolling along now.

Re: Tell Me About Funimation's Dragon Ball GT Dub
From what I remember, it's not nearly as bad as the Z one. The script is much more accurate overall, more on the DragonBall dub's level. Still not nearly as good as most of FUNi's other titles, but decent enough.
What really made the GT dub bad though was the music. The horrible, over-grungy, "hardcore" electronic rock-rap score was painful to listen to. This was fixed with the green Season Sets, however, which included the original, brilliant Japanese BGM and even axed the "Step Into The Grand Tour" theme song in favor of English-dubbed versions of the various original themes.

From what I've heard, the script is quite accurate for the most part. Don't take my word for this through.
However, its the music that's a big turn off. Personally I thought the dub music was okay, just nothing compared to the original Japanese BGM - which made the series watchable for me.

It's hit and miss. Some episodes are completely accurate. Others have some issues in scripts. It has to do which person wrote the episodes.Blue wrote:I've only seen a clip or two of it and I can barely sit through all 64 episodes with a voice cast I prefer so I'm looking for your help Daizex. If you check the FUNimation forum MagicBox (if I remember correctly) has a thread comparing the Dub to the Japanese to see how accurate it is.
I like the dub with original BGM. That's the main reason I'd always watch it in Japanese up until them.
The Voice Work is above average. Not completely great, doesn't suck either. I like it more than their Z (1999-2005) voice work.
But, as with GT in general, it's best not to take it so seriously or it'll bother you.

Combined with the original Japanese score and the dubbed opening and ending themes, the GT dub is fairly enjoyable. It's also miles better than Z.

The dub itself isn't bad, but it's not perfect. The biggest thing that bothered me was the way the narrator talked, it didn't fit with the mood of the show at all. The way he says "GeeeTeeee..." just annoyed me.

Re: Tell Me About Funimation's Dragon Ball GT Dub
While watching GT with the subtitles on, it's script seemed to be just inches above FUNi's script for the Buu saga. It wasn't really accurate, but we're not talking about Namek saga butchery.
Re: Tell Me About Funimation's Dragon Ball GT Dub
And there's also the made up names for transformations, like "Majuub" and "Omega Shenron". Seriously, what the hell.

It isn't that far off from Tsufuru, really. Sounds better for them, too.The Time Traveller wrote:And it has "Tuffles".![]()

It sounds like Truffle, there's no way that's better than Tsufuru-jin, Tsufrian or Tsuful.Savage68 wrote:Sounds better for them, too.

Re: Tell Me About Funimation's Dragon Ball GT Dub
"Accept" isn't the right word I'm looking for... I guess it wasn't a "surprise" to see the name-adaptation of "Tuffle" show up in their dub of DBGT. I mean, Hell... so many of those original "DBZ seasons one and two" precedents remained (and continue to remain, unfortunately...) over the years, that why should we have expected anything else?
What irked me more than anything was how they just went and made up (wrong) names for all of the dragons. Yes, yes... you're very clever by having the first letter of each name, in star-order, spell out the name "Shenron". Great. Want a cookie? Too bad -- they're not even "shenron" to begin with. They're all ridiculous names, get the type of dragon they are wildly wrong, and pass by an opportunity to just name the darn things what they're already named and so ridiculously easy to adapt into English ("One-Star Dragon", etc.).
Really? "Omega"...? Really...? It's a good thing there's no "B" in "Shenron", or else we'd have ended up with "Bodacious Shenron".

I never noticed this. I was wondering why so many of those Shadow Dragon names seemed to be poorly contrived, even for a creation of FUNi's. I'm wondering just how many other dub viewers had this fly right over their heads...

Re: Tell Me About Funimation's Dragon Ball GT Dub
Yes, yes, and yes! The naming of the dragons is the one thing about FUNi's GT that annoys me the most. I can get past the music, but the name changes, which are poor ones at that, are inexcusable in my book. Although, if I actually liked GT enough, I'd probably complain about it more.VegettoEX wrote:What irked me more than anything was how they just went and made up (wrong) names for all of the dragons. Anyway, I've also never liked "Tuffle" because it loses its pun. But I can see how difficult it'd be to try and get people to say Tsufuru properly. I mean, it's harder to say Tsufuru than it is to say Saiyan, and we all know how that ended up.

It sucks.
I kid, I kid. It's decent, but the ZKai and DB dubs make it look like dirt.

Not really. I'd say GT's dub is a lot better than DB's dub.RoarkVegeta wrote:I kid, I kid. It's decent, but [cut] DB dubs make it look like dirt.

Well, judging it solely on its original broadcast, I'd say the fact that DB actually had the original score put it several steps above any other DB series FUNimation had touched.

Besides, there's no real perfect way to bring that pun over, is there? What would you call them, Tsfrui? Oh well, it's not like you can get the "Saiyan" pun unless you speak Japanese, even if the dub did use the right pronunciation.Hujio wrote:Yes, yes, and yes! The only real problem with "Tuffles" is that it ignores the "tsu" part in "Tsufurujin". It's not a correct transliteration, but they could have done worse. The Time Traveller wrote:And it has "Tuffles".![]()

Re: Tell Me About Funimation's Dragon Ball GT Dub
Well, "tsu" can be romanised as "tu", although it's non-standard and doesn't give a proper indication of what the pronunciation is. So basically, they went from "Tufuru" to "Tuffle".Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:The only real problem with "Tuffles" is that it ignores the "tsu" part in "Tsufurujin". "Tuffle" isn't so much wrong as much as it is merely a mangled pronunciation, like how they say "Saiyan" as "Say-in" rather than like the pronunciation in the Japanese "Saiya-jin".
