Toriyama's Opinion/Stance on Kai

Post by Soul » Mon Aug 30, 2010 7:44 am

Has Toriyama said or released a statement about it or no?
I assume he just takes it as another piece of his cash cow huh?

While rolling around in mountainous piles of money, Mr Toriyama told an interviewer: "Kai? What's that? Is it some sort of series about Kaio? Which one was Kaio, again...?"

I doubt he's said anything about it, but I think if he had we'd have heard about it. However, I can guarantee you that if he did it would go something like this: it's great, it makes him happy that Dragon Ball is still so popular, and he hopes you will keep watching.

Toriyama :

'What's that?
Another dump truck of money just rolled up at my house?
Leave it over there with the other 50'.

I could kind of see why he feels the way he does about DB, sort of like how some 1 hit wonder people hate their 1 hit after awhile because people don't appreciate their Other work....BUT.... this is DRAGONBALL. I know it's not true but thats like the biggest thing to ever come from Japan to me[aside from amazing technology]

On Kai; I would hope he atleast watched an episode or two. Isn't this the first time a show has been re-done like this?

I was thinking about making this topic.

When I first heard Kai, I thought it's about Kaio.

I don't think I've heard of anything official from him. Maybe one of the Blu-ray releases (which each contain a voice actor interview) will get him for one?

Hmm, just checked wikipedia to see what he might be up to lately (last thing I remembered was Blue Dragon) but according to the article the last thing he's been working on is DragonBall online. Sounds like he hasn't totally abandoned DB to me. Wow it says he had worked on DBO for five years! I kinda think he's probably moved on to another project by now. I could have sword I had seen something about a Chrono Trigger Sequel or something like that?

Yeah they didn't just slap DBO together and toss it out there. They got him to give some 'future stories' of what everyone ended up doing AFTER the Buu saga, which I love and would have enjoyed seeing that [and also why no villians were around for so long] BUT the thing I hate the most about DBO is...its SO far into the future, Id want to play during the time of when everything was going on, not to a distant future where the Saiyan gene is so far spread out.

I know it's a cartoon and all, but I was saddened that there are no more Full blooded saiyans. I would have thought Vegeta being so proud would have used the time machine to go back and snatch up some girly Saiyans and re-start his race again.

Remember, in his timeline, there is no time machine. In fact, it's not built until later according to what we saw from the DBO trailer's intense analysis, iirc.

As for his opinion on Kai? I imagine he's very nonchalant about it. Supportive, yes, but not thrilled or jumping for joy, just an "Oh, cool.", if you will.

I don't think he hates it(unless he actually implied it somewhere), the only thing I think he hated about were the deadlines he had to deal with when he wrote the manga.

Someone needs to make a photo of the Shueisha(?) logo holding a whip forcing Toriyama to draw.

I'm nearly certain that he hasn't said anything about it. I badly want to hear what he thinks about it, though. Does he like it more than DBZ, since it sticks closer to the Manga? Or does he like DBZ better, since he worked more closely on that series?

No. We do know he came up with the name "Dragon Ball Kai" though.

According to Kai's Japanese Wikipedia page, Toriyama is the one who came up withe the "Kai" title. There's no real source for it, which is why I'm always hesitant to even mention it. However, it would make sense if he did, since he's named every other series.

Hm, I'm been partial to stand-by the FUNimation re-title, adding the "Z" because.. that's what it is.
It's "Z Kai", because we still know there's still a bit of filler in the original DB itself.

I don't know why everyone thinks Toriyama has this enormous money vault, ala Scrooge McDuck. I'm sure he's done well, but I wouldn't think he's obscenely wealthy.

As far as we know, it was actually Toei that re-titled it as "Z Kai", not FUNimation. It appears as though any international release of the series will be titled "Z Kai", whether it be by FUNimation or AB Groupe. So I guess you can stand by the re-title all you want, but it doesn't really change anything. I refer to the series as "Kai" because I'm usually talking about the original Japanese version. If I'm specifically talking about FUNimation's dub of said series, I say "Z Kai", even if I personally dislike the re-title. I suppose if they had just called it "Z Kai" in Japan to begin with, like most of us wanted, then we wouldn't really be having this discussion.

Oh yeah I agree, added I just meant that in Japan of course, in my opinion it should've been "Z Kai" though regardless yeah, I too as most people I think refer to it as Kai in general.

Though, if Toriyama did retitle it; Heh guess we CAN really joke with that whole "Original Vision" crap ala "He didn't like the first 16 Volumes much anyway"
