Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discussion
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Well, when you remove the "O" from Kaio-Sama, you lose part of it's meaning. Kind of like how Kaio-Ken is Fist of the Worlds, Kaio-Sama is "Lord of the Worlds".
Then again, your typical English speaking child has no idea what King Kai means, so they'll just nod and assume "Kai" is just a meaningless name, not "King Worlds".

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
That doesn't really make sense either. If we are to assume "King Kai" is some king named "Kai", what's up with there being a "Grand Kai" and a "Supreme Kai" and whatever it is they call them? Is he "the king Kai", as in "the king of the Kai"? Is "Kai" the name of a race? Are there "normal Kais" out there?

I thought "O" was the honorific for "King" or something to that effect...so wouldn't "King Kai" be the same as "Kaio"?Rory wrote:Well, when you remove the "O" from Kaio-Sama, you lose part of it's meaning. Kind of like how Kaio-Ken is Fist of the Worlds, Kaio-Sama is "Lord of the Worlds".

Anyway, I didn't see this, but it sounds like that was a pretty clever way of getting that across without honorifics, etc. I approve, and I'm not easy to please.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
"King Kai" implies that he's either a king named Kai, or a "Kai" that's king, neither of which is the case... so no.Big Momma wrote:I thought "O" was the honorific for "King" or something to that effect...so wouldn't "King Kai" be the same as "Kaio"?
"King of kai" or "the kai king" would work, but that would require you to know what the randomly untranslated word "kai" meant in order to make sense.

"王" (ō) is literally the Japanese word for "king", so yeah. It would.Big Momma wrote: I thought "O" was the honorific for "King" or something to that effect...so wouldn't "King Kai" be the same as "Kaio"?
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
So Kaio-Ken would be Fist of the World King.
Kaio being World King (or King of the Worlds). Sama is an honorific of great respect, and a King is often called Lord in respect, so that's how Viz comes to use Lord of the Worlds (at least, in my version it's used).
King Kai works, but the people who generally complain likely don't like that it's a half translation treating Kai like a name, rather than a title.
Doesn't bother me personally, but hey, every fan is different in love of their fandoms.
Also, I checked my guide and saw, so far, that only one new episode is shown for next week. Is it down to one episode a week at this point?

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Seems that way at the moment. But personally? It's not a big deal. I rather them show a new episode every week. Then blow the rest of the dubbed episodes out in a month or so.
ITS NOT LIKE WE HAVEN'T seen what happens before right?
Plus, Nicktoons reruns Kai quite a bit, which I hope they make a new Promo for it, besides running the Saiyan saga promo.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
In FUNimation's defense, they don't use Kai like a name. They use it as a title.
Hence "The Kai", and in the Boo arc they used "West Kai" and "Supreme Kai".
These may not be the most correct, but they are titles, not names.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
I agree, it just might come off that way to some of the fans. Like I said, I'm fine with it.ohaimynameiserik wrote:In FUNimation's defense, they don't use Kai like a name. They use it as a title.

And after the disturbing levels of censorship from the latest WB Kai episode, I'm looking forward to seeing Freeza fight Vegeta, Gohan, and Krillin.

Does that mean he can stop time?linkdude20002001 wrote:So he's "The World"?jjgp1112 wrote:Awesome, he referred to him as "The Kai" instead of King Kai!
It is weird that they call him "King Kai". Deeply, deeply weird. They only reason most people don't question that nonsensical half-translation is simply because they happen to be used to it.Big Momma wrote:That's just nitpicking. By that logic, wouldn't it be weird if they called him "King Kai", too? (So he's "King World"?)
Ou isn't an honorific, it's simply the Japanese word for "king"; sama would be an example of an honorific. Kaiou means "King of Worlds", whereas "King Kai" would mean a king who happens to be named "Kai". So no, unless your average English viewer could be expected to ascertain from the name "King Kai" that this is an individual who serves as king over many worlds, it is not the same as "Kaio".Big Momma wrote:I thought "O" was the honorific for "King" or something to that effect...so wouldn't "King Kai" be the same as "Kaio"?

Sorry if this has been brought up already.
Anybody know why Nicktoons took all of the full episodes other than 7 through 12 off of their site?

So I'm watching the Kai 5 hour marathon on Nicktoons [Goku left left for Namek] and I'm let down every time they pass up a moment for a great joke. Darn you TeamFourSat and your witty hilarity.
EDIT: Also not feeling all this sappy violin and orchestra music during 'story time' on Namek.

I just heard a little info from Mendiso in the chat.
There was a news scroller-thing on the screen, and it said October 20th will be when the next episodes will air.
I have no words.

October 20? Ahahaha, oh wow. Nice trolling, Nicktoons.
Chris Ayres was amazing in this latest episode, though, so that makes up for it somewhat.
