Well considering how inconsistent Toriyama is, the chance of a contradiction should always be something to keep in mind. We can safely say they were blue at one point though.

And to keep the trend going; Cell with a blue mouth in the manga, possibly inherited from Freeza:

Since you're mentionning Cell, a notable difference is the color of his articulations: purple in the anime, but blue in the manga and artworks.

In the cover page of the Tankoubon Volume 36, Gohan's bandana is orange (in the anime, white), Goten's shirt is black (in the anime, blue), Videl's tank top is blue and shirt is white (in the anime, the tank top was white and the shirt was violet) and her boots are orange (in the anime, yellow):

Ah, sorry, I missed that post.
And I wouldn't say one version is correct and the other is incorrect because the anime and manga are separate versions of Dragon Ball(and as you can see from the pictures in the thread, its not the only colour difference between the anime and manga). The purple colouring is,of course, more widely know. Its even purple in Dragon Ball Online which is based off the manga.

Isn't there an interview with Toriyama saying something along the lines of 'I know everyone imagines their own colors for this black and white manga which is why I switch them around myself' ?
