Um, that seems quite a bit of text to dump on a newbie, as well as being extremely spoilerriffic considering he seems to be leaning towards starting from the beginning.

Yeah... What the heck is TheGreatness25 trying to do, drive Pandorica away from watching the original Dragon Ball?

Um I gave the basics and gave that as an option for him to read. If he had no means (didn't want to buy the series, etc.) of watching the original, I gave him something to use. It's his choice if he wants to read it or not. And it's not much of a spoiler if it came before the show he's watching. Ah whatever, I'm... sorry?

It's just, if he reads the entirety of your post, he'd end up knowing everything that happens in DB. I'm worried he might think the timeline you posted takes place BEFORE DB, and therefore end up reading it all.

Oh well... then I guess I'll take it down. And I spent so much time changing the names from dub to original. Ah well.

Note to PANDORICA

If you do not intend to watch Dragon Ball, let me know. I'd send you the time line.

Ah yeah, one thing you definitely want to know, Pandorica.

"Kami" is Japanese for god. The "person" referred to as "Kami-sama" is God. Annoyingly enough, the DVD subtitles leave this untranslated for whatever reason, and there's a bunch of dialogue around the point where God is first introduced as a character that make absolutely no sense unless you already know this.

You've basically still spoiled the entire series, just shortened it a little. He implied he was going to start watching DB, so I'd just remove the whole thing.

How did I do that? I just gave the basic character relationships. I'm being criticized for answering the question on a site that is all about Dragon Ball/Z/GT, so if this person really wants a spoiler, there's no better site to be on in the first place lol Never thought that giving information would be looked down upon on this site, but whatever.

No, revelations and plot developments up to and including the end of the series aren't "basic character interactions". If I were Pandorica I'd be pretty bummed that you just told me everything that happens in the series, especially since I was about to start watching it and find out for myself.

Not to mention you didn't actually answer any question, either. Pandorica said he was going to watch the series from the beginning, and you jumped in with a gigantic post saying "but you don't HAVE to if you don't want to, let me spoil the entire "pre-DBZ" story for you, including a ton of stuff that's not actually revealed until some late- "DBZ" flashbacks".

Okay, okay, I think he gets the point. No need to berate him to death. At least he had good intentions.

If you want to cover the story quickly, the manga is a great option. The "VizBig Editions" are big and well priced, and you could blow through Dragon Ball like nobody's business if you read them. Just another option if you want to get to the "Z" part more quickly...although personally I'd recommend just reading the whole manga, if you don't mind comics.

Also, I really do recommend going through Dragon Ball in some form before moving on to "Z". It isn't entirely necessary--after all, most of us started with "Z" because that's what came out in English first--but I honestly regret not being able to start with the beginning, and I envy people who get the chance.

Sorry for abruptly logging out last night, but I went to order Dragon Ball Season 1 so I think that’s a good enough reason. I guess it’s a rash decision but it’s also a good one :D

I appreciate the effort that went into the timeline even though I don’t particularly want to read it, I’d rather experience the series first hand by watching the anime or reading the manga than just staring at a computer screen.

I was in the US up until Friday and got home Saturday, I watched and later picked Z Kai up over there , and I do also have a multi region. Now the waiting game begins, only problem now is won’t be here till about Tuesday or Wednesday :( . In the meantime I guess I’ll have to just settle for regular T.V (sighs) Dragon Ball can’t come quick enough.
They re-wrote it because they didn't bother to hire a translator till they got to episode to about episode 100 or so, and then they decided fans wouldn't like it if they suddenly switched to using the translation, so they continued to make stuff up. Just so you know, that's only how DBZ was done. DB and DBGT mostly use the translation, but it not always that good, and Kai is very accurate, though not perfect, but oh well.

Actually, yes, the voice actors WERE basically from the street. After 54 episodes of using the Vancouver, Canada voice talents, they decided to save money by hiring sound alikes without acting talent. They got better, and some are amazing now (example: Dragon Ball Kai), but if you go back and watch DBZ... Thanks to them going back and redoing the first 54 episodes with their current cast, and even re-dubbing some old lines (though not all; Goku's lines for example), the acting goes up and down all over the place. And some of the choices made for who voices which character is pretty bad . Though most of that is fixed for Kai, some characters still have voice issues (Kaioh, ReaCoom, and the Ox Demon-King [Gyumao] come to mind).
FUNimation really do baffle me, so for 46 episodes it’s just bulls**t coming out of the character’s mouths more or less and then they figure that kids wouldn’t want to hear a (I’m presuming) better script. But hey at least they saw sense a little later on.

Another thing, I can’t believe they basically got them from the street, that was just a throwaway comment, had no idea there was some actual truth behind it. I’ve definitely got to check out the dub then though I’m not sure I want to with just random guys named Joe voicing characters and inconsistencies at every corner.

Also, one last tip is that you don't need to inform us whether you will be right back, or if you are signing out. Message boards are called such because they revolve around posting of messages, and are not live chats, so it's expected that people won't always be logged in.

I would suggest not hanging out around here if you're going to watch Dragon Ball. Spoilers are common knowledge here and are treated as such. Come back when you're done!!! Not that we wouldn't want to talk to you, its just that we wouldn't want to inadvertently spoil any part of the story for you.

Yeah, the dub's certainly not the best (though, probably not the worst)... But It's only DB that gets screwed over by FUNi, so other shows by them are great to watch. Kai's the DB exception to this rule, however. Though, it's still got the incorrect names, and, while some pronunciations were fixed (Kaioh-ken), others they refused to fix (Saiyan) thanks ti their fear of angering dub fans (which they've done already with Kai).

If you watch DBZ's English dub, what I would consider the bad stuff is from episode 68 (54 [going by the original Eng. dub's ep. no.]) to episode 194 (179). Though, FUNi did redo some of the early awfulness... But there's still plenty of it. If you want to hear true awfulness, look for the old DVD singles which tend to have about three episodes per disk. That's the only release of the original crappy dub before they went and re-did the voice work that was inconsistent to the re-dub of episodes 1~53.
