Though, if you think about it, why would 19's voice have that filter if 8's voice came out perfectly fine? Did Gero forget how to make robots?

That's true. Although 8 was clearly based on Frankenstein's monster who spoke normally.

I assumed nothing, I just provided a more concrete example of what you were talking about.TonyTheTiger wrote: You're assuming I said that change was an improvement. I'm talking a change that is an improvement, whatever that change may be. There's a difference.
(and when talking about the Funi dub of Dragonball, the Romeo+Juliet analogy is a lot more fitting than a slight change of the end scene in Othello for reasons that can be defended as logical).

Re: Moments FUNimation's English Dub Did Better?
What I was talking about is summarized in that link to TV Tropes. Any specific example is only just that, an example of a greater phenomenon at work. I wasn't saying that any specific instance of a FUNi change was for the better or worse. Just that the phenomenon exists and would help to explain why even a good change (whatever that change may be, if it exists) wouldn't be much appreciated regardless of the innate quality. Whether or not there actually is a good change is beside the point since the phenomenon still exists when we're dealing with a foundation (the Japanese version) and an adaptation of it.Adamant wrote:I assumed nothing, I just provided a more concrete example of what you were talking about.TonyTheTiger wrote: You're assuming I said that change was an improvement. Point is, it's hard to be objective under these circumstances since any change is automatically going to be the "other." It's not situated equally with the original.
And you know what? Maybe it shouldn't be. The rules are different with adaptations and localizations than they are with original material and I can respect that. But, yeah, that pretty much explains why "improvement" is such a loaded concept when dealing with anime dubs or video game localizations back in the Ted Woolsey and Victor Ireland days who in a more subtle way had a bit of a FUNi streak in them. It's going to be polarizing by nature.

#8 was a cyborg, man. A better example would be Dr. Gero himself (aka #20).penguintruth wrote:Though, if you think about it, why would 19's voice have that filter if 8's voice came out perfectly fine? Did Gero forget how to make robots?

I love the last name thing because of how haphazard it is.
Inquiry: "Why is it that you haven't told us everybody's last name?"
Toriyama: "Well...uh...they don't have last names!"
Reminds me of Jim Gaffigan's male seahorse routine.

Videl says it. It's how she found out Gohan is the son of that guy who won the world tournament.caejones wrote:That's... how we know that most people don't have family names, actually... because it's been stated that "Son" is out of the ordinary.

Re: Moments FUNimation's English Dub Did Better?
It's not that family names don't exist at all in the Dragon World, just that they're very rare. Videl points this out in the manga when she makes the "Son Goku" -> "Son Gohan" connection. Aside from the 'Son' family, the Norimakis and other Penguin Village residents, and one or two others whom I can't remember, family names are almost a non-entity in Dragon Ball's world.

While we're off topic...
This "Son Pan" thing that pops up all over fanfiction is not substantiated at all by the series, right?
What about Goku Jr? Does he ever have a family name?
... on topic... I don't remember anyone mentioning Trunks and Goten's pee-break in this thread, even though it's come up in the past.
.
Trunks: I can write my name!
Goten: Hey, me too!
Both: T. . . R. . . U. . .
Trunks: Hey, write your own name!
Trunks, stop introducing Goten to mischief this instance!

No, I don't believe Pan is ever called "Son Pan" at any point, even though she kinda should be. Nor, I believe, do we ever hear "Son Chi-Chi" or "Son Videl" after the two marry Goku and Gohan.

Remember that wives don't have to take their husband's name. Nor does the child have to take the father's name.Kaboom wrote:No, I don't believe Pan is ever called "Son Pan" at any point, even though she kinda should be. And in a world where family names are rare, would there even be such a tradition in the Dragon World?

Re: Moments FUNimation's English Dub Did Better?
In the GT TV special, Pan's house says "SON" on it, which a lot of people take as confirmation that it's her surname. But it's never directly applied to her.caejones wrote:This "Son Pan" thing that pops up all over fanfiction is not substantiated at all by the series, right?

As for Gokuu Jr, he's definitely a Son. He's credited as "Son Gokuu Jr" at the end of the special, and I believe Pan explains that she specifically gave him the name "Son Gokuu" after her grandfather.

Aside from the Videl thing, Toriyama also mentions in the SEG: Character Volume that Mister Satan's real name is "just Mark", because they don't have family names in the region where he and Videl live. Which implies that there are other regions where they do have family names (I suppose Penguin Village would be one of those).caejones wrote:(... Source, someone? Re: Moments FUNimation's English Dub Did Better?
After being so impressed with Kai's dub I decided to go through GT and I have to say Funi did a really good job at changing Trunk's dialogue to be a little more cocky and bratty like his child counterpart. Major props for that. There's a sense of him growing up but still retaining that sarcastic no bullshit type of attitude.
Also Goku saying "I already tried this and it didn't work!" to Pan when she tried dressing him up as a girl was an awesome throw back. Really funny stuff.

No, no, when Goku tried to trick Oolong by dressing up as a girl, back in DB.

Oolong was trying to kidnap a girl, so they dressed Goku up as one to find out Oolong's hideout. This failed because Goku took a piss and Oolong saw, causing a major freakout and a fight.Piccolo Daimao wrote:Wait, what? When did Pan try dressing Goku up as a girl?
