Dragon Ball SD Continues

Post by SSJSteve » Tue Mar 29, 2011 4:21 pm

From the front page of Daizenshuu EX:
Daizenshuu EX wrote:Last November we learned about a new quarterly magazine from Shueisha called Saikyô Jump, which would contain spin-off chapters from their various popular series. For their first issue, a special chapter called DragonBall SD was drawn by Naho Ooishi, who had previously drawn the two-part manga adaptation of the 2008 Jump Super Anime Tour Special. It was a retelling of Goku's early adventures with Kuririn while training under Kame-Sen'nin.

No second chapter was listed in the debut issue (despite other series having announced second chapters), but it was revealed yesterday that DragonBall SD would return for another chapter, again by Naho Ooishi, in the next issue of Saikyô Jump.

Unfortunately, due to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the 11 April 2011 release date of the issue has been pushed back, and no new date has been announced.

The other picture from the main page says that this chapter will feature Goku and Freeza's showdown.

Now I'm all excited and partly-revived from the whole "DB's going to take a vacation for the next several years since it's not making money and while it's gone there won't be anything new for it outside the occasional DBO update." thing. O_O

Adult Goku~! X3 Adult Goku means there's a possibility for Vegeta to appear.

The first SD chapter was just cute, repetitive fluff; why am I so anxious over a 2nd chapter? D:

I guess I'm hoping for something new/fun.

EDIT: Ah, it's Goku vs Freeza? Huh. I wonder how that'll work out.

The fact that it was just bland, repetitive fluff makes me less than enthused that they're doing another one. But that it's Goku vs. Freeza means to me that it'll either be really good or just more of the same. It really depends on if she decides to take advantage of the SD concept. If she does, making the Goku/Freeza fight wacky and cute should be hilarious and well worth reading. However, if she just does what she did last time, it'll be the exact same things that happen in the original manga, but with a different art style (ie. a complete waste of time). Hopefully, it'll be the former.

Hey it wasn't bland and repetitive. It was meant to be nostalgic although I wish it wasn't. I'm still looking forward to this next release just because I've always been a rabid DBZ fan and forever will be. :)

For some reason I assumed it'd actually follow chronologically and would keep going through Dragonball instead of randomly skipping to DBZ. There goes any interest I had in this.

Actually quite the opposite for me. We know the plot line of DragonBall, so I don't mind if they just skip around doing random cute takes on the DragonBall franchise. But that's the key, it needs to be cute. I don't want to just re-read the Goku/Freeza fight in a more chibi format. I want it to retain humor and have a parody factor. Something similar to the feel I had way back when while reading the fan-strips, "Little Saiya-lings".

Oshii's just bidding her time until Shueshia allows her to do a full on Dragon Ball re-imagining...
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

I'm up for anything new, so yes I'm looking forward to it.

SD Freeza would be adorable. I wonder if she's going to draw Krillin's death sence but in completely cute way.

Sweet. If this depicts Goku and Frieza's showdown, then I'm totally up for it. Hopefully I'll enjoy it even more than the last chapter!

Question! Kanzentai's update mentions:
Kanzentai wrote:an exclusive "Strongest Hero Grand Collection DVD". The DVD will include "movie manga" versions of the twelve stories from the first issue.
Does that mean Shueisha animated that Goku and Kuririn short? I think I'd like to watch that.

I'd be more excited about this if I liked Oishii's drawings a little more :( . Her style lacks dynamism and that really bothered me in her previouse DB work. Not to mention I feel like it's going to be one of those parody versions for kids. I just hope it's not colored again.

On the other hand, YAY for more DB stuff I guess....

I think Toei will be the one who does the animation.

Sounds like one of that vomic things to me.
It's hard to explain what is a vomic, it's like a sequence of panels with voice actors.
Sorry, I can't speak English very well, but I'm trying my best.

No, it won't be animated. I imagine it will be each individual panel set to music, possibly with voice actors reading the lines. It's literally manga as a movie, on a DVD, on your TV (or computer). It's not an adaptation of the manga, it is the manga.

Or, in other words, a vomic.

Yeah, if there are voice actors involved, which we don't know that there are. If not, then it's just manga with music, or a "momic" if you will.

Aww. :(
*Was hoping for some new DB animation*.

I have heard of the sort of thing you're describing, but I didn't know it had a name.
