Because they needed to fill an episode?
If they needed to fill the episode they should've used footage from episode 200 of Gohan on on his way to college which I think would've been way more appropriate.
I agree. I think the Gohan stuff might have felt more... complete? Perhaps the people putting this together weren't fully aware this was filler? Kaio does mention the tournament in the manga doesn't he? It's all just pretty weird...

When I was making this fake episode 99 previewI didn't even use the Anoyoichi Budokai because I never thought they'd consider it for Kai.

In DBZ Vol. 19 (DB Vol. 35), Goku says to everyone when they were using the Dragonballs that he'll get to keep his body and meet all the old martial arts masters from history. In DBZ Vol. 20 (DB Vol. 36) South Kaiou started talking trash to North Kaiou about Goku's oldschool training method and how a fighter named Papoye from the Southern Galaxy could whoop on Goku. Kaiou then asked South Kaiou to enter Papoye into the Tenkai'chi Budoukai on Earth, but Papoye backed down after Goku's weights were changed to 10 tons per weight and he was still able to easily train as a Super Saiyan.

In short, no specific mention of the Anoyo'ichi Budoukai ever came about, but other Kaiou have shown up in the series and old dead martial arts masters have been mentioned as well.

If anyone who has the Japanese volumes wants to do some fact checking to make sure the VIZ translations are correct, by all means do so. :D

So wait, Do you think that the other world tournament (yes I'm using english dub names, sue me) was going to be a planned arc for the manga but got cut due to time constraints or something and got added to the anime later on?

I've heard of other manga-to-anime series's like bleach that have done filler arcs that the creator of the manga wanted to put in the manga but didn't have time so the manga creator requested that the anime has that arc put in as a sort-of canon arc to make up for it.

I never saw it that way. I always figured that Goku said that in the manga, it was then brought over into the anime, and then the anime staff made that arc because it sounded like something that could reasonably happen in Dragonball without contradicting the events of the manga.

Sort of like Gohan's survival training filler.

So I'm not entirely clear on this. Do they show Goku's fight with Pikkon or just mention the Afterlife Tournament in an Epilogue, sort of how Dragon Ball was glossed over as a Prologue at the beginning of the series? Do they mention the Buu Saga in that Epilogue or just the Afterlife tournament?

My copy's waiting for pickup at the post office, so expect a review hopefully later this week. I'll clarify anything anyone wants :).

Just the DVD version, but still... I can do screen shots, fully plan on doing recaps of the episodes, comparisons to the Z originals, etc. Anything else in particular anyone wants?

The review will be posted in the "Reviews" section of the website when it's done. I'm sure we'll mention a few things on the podcast, too, but this is more of a "full" review that's coming.

So interesting thing as I watched episode 98 this morning:

Image

That's "CURE ~ I'll Be Here ~" listed, the one sung by Aya Hirano (as "Dende") that's been hanging out since the first Kai Song Collection (November 2009). Except... it didn't actually play in the episode. I mean, I wasn't paying the closest attention, but it was entirely Kikuchi BGM the entire way through near as I could tell (lots of DBZ movie 8 stuff). I'd like to think I'd notice this random extra song playing at some point. The only "extra" music was the "Dragon Soul" full version recap thingie before the closing credits.

I wonder if they had PLANNED on using it as an insert song back in March, but once the score got stripped out, it was replaced (but no-one bothered to change the closing credits)...? 'Cuz remember, it was episodes 96 and 97 that were the first ones to play on-air with the replacement score, which seemed like a panic rush to get them done. I would assume 98 was in the mix there, but then all the stuff went down that resulted in it never airing.

Food for thought, I guess.

EDIT: Scratch that. It plays VERY FAINTLY on the radio when Bulma and Trunks are having tea or whatever, right before the announcer breaks in to announce what #17 and #18 are up to.

(That recap at the end is VERY weird, indeed. The Ano-Yo-Ichi Budokai comes out of left field. That's what actually starts the segment, and it's just a few quick scenes played out chronologically [Goku starts, fights Paikuhan, some special attacks, whoops it's over!], and then it goes back to start from the "beginning" of Z, except it also starts with some of the recap stuff from the first DB series, like Goku and Chi-Chi getting married. Very spastic recap, especially since then it goes and does stuff AGAIN that they missed once Cell is killed, ending with Goku's Kamehameha vs Vegeta at the end of the Saiyan arc. Basically a moderately terrible AMV, complete with random and inconsistent bits of timing to the beat when they remembered to do so.)

Hah. That's weird. Did Yamamoto compose Cure, too? Hmm...

I'm still pretty curious as to whether or not Wakamoto's first form Cell was in line with his performance earlier in Kai or if he just did whatever. Somehow it wouldn't surprise me...

The way it sounds, it kinda reminds me of the ending montage at the end of DBGT. You think it's going in order but then it's apparent it has no rhyme or reason.

No, it's composed and arranged by cAnON., who is a daughter of Yamamoto.
