Ultimate Battle 22: Worth $4?
I recently found a copy of Ultimate Battle 22 at a local Gamestop for 4 bucks. I've heard that this game isn't exactly the calibur of the recent crop of DBZ games, but would the game be worth getting at such a low price? Or is it too horrible to bother with at any price?

Have you ever played any of the old Japanese DBZ fighting games? Like the Super Butoden series?
If you haven't, the best thing to compare this game to, in my opinion, is Capcom fighting games (control wise; those damn quarter circles, half circles, full circles, on the d-pad...and the sort of forward-back-forward or hold back 2 seconds then press forward motions).
There's nothing fancy in this game like something cinematic you'd find in the recent games.
If you buy it, just keep in mind that it originally came out in like 1995. So don't expect too much from it.
$4 isn't running a risk. If you're curious, might as well go for it.

For what it is, it is definately worth $4. A decent little 2D fighter. Years ago when I first purchased the import of this game, my cousin and I always had fun doing the versus mode. Pulling off Roshi's Super Kamehameha and watching him pump up like when he blew up fire mountain, or pulling off a super finishing move quite by accident were always fun moments.
I paid $35 for it back in 1997 I believe, I felt it was worth that back then. $4 for it today is definately worthwhile, check it out.

UB22? It's not that bad really. The build-up mode's actually pretty fun, and the Japanese voices are a plus. They even give you the code for all the secret characters in the game manual O_o. Though, I've never figured out how to put the damn code in.

I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.

If you ignore the fact it has no story mode, it's actually pretty damn fun and a good Ps1 game, considering it was made literally 10 years ago. The North American version basically retains everything the Japanese and PAL releases did, though unfortunately cuts some intro cut-scenes to the battles. But hey, the opening animation is awesome, all of the Japanese VAs are there for their own respective parts, the game-play is nowhere near as crappy as Final Bout's was, and you get a very decent list of fighters, not to mention all of the sweet moves they get (Roshi's Maxi Kamehameha, Gotenks' SSJ3 Super Ghosts, Tien's multiform technique, list goes on). The only things I disliked about the game was the total lack of the story mode, and considering the intro cut-scenes of the battles are cut from the Japanese version, that just makes it even more "meh". But hey, the Japanese VAs are all there and the game-play and graphics are quite fun considering when this game was released, definitely pick up if it's that cheap.

I boght it for $15, used, at EB. I don't play it. I can't, it's so bad. It reminds me of playing Final Bout - but always as gohan (step. step. step. punch.)
The whole control scheme is too slow. no one moves fast enough for it to be fun.
But, hey, four bucks? I'd do it.

(é) Yeah, I'm famous. Super famous. I start things.

The NA version's manual is funny. The English PAL version is the best; the name changes and instruction manual are a hilarious read.

That's from Kid Trunks's entry. You will never be beaten by an adult! So hit them, hit them, and hit again!

Also, I noticed that Gogeta has been re-named Vegetto in the NA version.

Actually, all fighting games that use directional keys in attacks are in fact circle commands. Like Bloody Roar's 2 manual, which features the arrows in the manual, and the circular command when you beat the game with that character.Leotaku wrote:Have you ever played any of the old Japanese DBZ fighting games? I feel you. I got the game back in '99 (along with Final Bout and Legends) and it was worth it man. I mean think about those days when Playstation and Nintendo 64 were the major systems; if you got your hands on a DBZ game out here in America it was like gold.Tanooki Kuribo wrote:I remeber I paid like $60.00 for UB22 when it first came out in Japan, I was such a dork, but hey back then it was pretty cool and there wasn't this whole DBZ Video game market here where as you can go into a Toys "R" Us and buy a DBZ game.
If it was released then they would advertise it as the "game that got away". I would expect it to come out (if it were to come out) after they dub Movie 13. Their last resort of milking the DragonBall franchise for everything it has.Tapion wrote:It's not as good as Legends, if only they would release that here....
