A few Movie 8 questions

Post by Nazi Cola » Sun Nov 20, 2011 5:13 pm

I just have a few questions about Movie 8 regarding the geography and timeline in it.

~ Where is New Planet Vegeta? I've been told it's in the Southern Galaxy but I'm not sure.

~ During the flashbacks of Broly terrorizing things, was it ever said (in guidebooks or the movies) where he was? I've also been told that was the Southern Galaxy.

~ If New Planet Vegeta is in the Southern Galaxy, and Earth is in the Nothern Galaxy, how long did it take the Z-Fighters to get from one point to the next in Paragus' ship? From what some have said, it was within a day.

~ Jumping on the last question, does anybody have a decent idea of the timeline of the movie? I've heard it takes place in roughly 2-3 days.

Thanks for any helpful replies! :)

In the begining of the movie, it was said that Broli actualy destroyed the whole Southern Galaxy, if memory serves well. As for the timeline, I believe it takes place during the 10 days period before Cell Games, but there is a plot-hole, Goku and Gohan aren't SSJ all the time.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Gohan is a Super Saiyan, however not a full-power Super Saiyan. This doesn't take place in any "real" moment of the manga time-line.

Daizenshuu six places it, at least time-wise, sometime between Cell attaining his completion and the Cell Games happening. But since the world is at peace and everyone's happily doing things like going to picnics and school interviews, instead of all of civilization being completely shut down in fear and panic... It seems that for some reason or another the Cell Games aren't actually due to happen in this particular continuity.

It had to take place before the Cell games. That is the only weird thing, Goku and Gohan are not SSJ the whole time. But if you look at them while they are SSJ it looks easy for them, so maybe for that time Goku was just like "well lets just go back to normal".

Except for, as Kaboom just pointed out, the whole world isn't shut down like the narrator says it is in both the manga and anime. They're still holding private school interviews, for goodness' sake. Chi-chi is talking about Gohan being on spring break, etc.

This just doesn't fit into the main timeline at all.

It would be an alternate timeline, one where Goku did not die after the fight with Cell is the only thing I can think of.

If that were the case though then Gohan should have access to his Super Saiya-jin 2 form.

As others have said though, I would put it somewhere between Cell announcing the Cell Games and the actual Cell Games starting, since that fits with at least most of what we see in movie 8. Why Cell isn't there and the populace isn't panicking about their impending deaths could be attributed to the same reason why you don't see everyone panicking about Buu in movie 12.

In regards to your question as to where Broly was during the flashbacks, I believe it was the Southern Galaxy since the opening scene has it established that he had finished "destroying" the Southern Galaxy, and there's no indication that it didn't take him a considerable amount of time to do it (especially since he seemed to be traveling from planet to planet under his own power rather than taking a ship)

But at the same time, He didn't have control over his SS2 powers. He couldn't just simply call it up naturally like regular Super Saiyan. If we go by Bojack Unbound, Gohan still needed a considerable amount of anger to let loose his powers.

And about the timeline thing, I would agree to place it in between the 10 days between the announcement of the Cell Games. The alternate timeline thing is just a suggestion but it would kinda make sense.

At the end of the day though, it's a movie and we don't need to put logic into a movie. We just sit back and enjoy it.

That reason being they don't take place in the series' timeline, right?

There's no way Movie 12 occurs in the midst of the Boo arc. There's, what, a single day when Goku and Vegeta are both dead at the same time? And Goku spends the entire time chilling on the Kaioshin planet. Hell, for that matter, the entire time Goku and Vegeta are both dead, Gohan is either receiving Old Kaioshin's powerup or fighting Boo; certainly no time for him to be on his standard Saiyaman duty.

Movie 8 comes a little closer to fitting, but both Goku and Gohan's lack of Super Saiyan and the lack of panic prevents it. And it's not just that we assume there should be panic but don't see it. The narrator specifically states in both the manga and anime that the world shuts down after the announcement of the Cell Games. We even see Goku drive through empty streets as Chi-Chi comments on the fact that no one wants to work if they think they're going to die. There's no way people are lining up for school interviews during all this.

The movie was just never intended to fit. Each movie just takes the anime's status quo at the time of its production and runs with it. The fact that Movies 9 and 13 fit so seamlessly is a coincidence, if anything, and they only work so well because they're based on status quos set right before time-skips.

The only way it could possibly fit with Celll, which in turn means it could never actually fit in the universes we know, at least as is:
-Goku didn't think up FPSS, therefore wasn't able to train Gohan to be stronger than himself.
-By the time they exit the RoSaT, Vegeta's Final Flash manages to obliterate an overconfident Cell.
-The epitome of perfection couldn't announce his tournament, therefore the planet isn't in complete panic.

It's clear to see that in this universe, Cell was either killed by Vegeta or hiding somewhere because he sensed Broli. Lol.

Pretty sure there's nothing specifying where it is.

Ditto.

Likewise, nothing's specified in the movie or anywhere else.

Kaboom already brought this up, but it might be worth reiterating that Daizenshuu 6 estimates that this movie takes place between Cell reaching his perfect form and the end of the Cell Games, but at the same time notes that the way in which everyone is just hanging out peacefully makes no sense. The standard format for these Daizenshuu 6 movie time frame charts is to note the general time frame in which the movie must have taken place (always given as between two main series story events), and then point out how this contradicts the main series. These charts are actually one of the few places in official sources to flat-out recognize these contradictions, and even describe the movies as like parallel worlds. Also, besides noting that the movies contradict the main series, Daizenshuu 6 describes these movie time frames as "estimations" rather than fact.

Darn, I thought there'd be some tiny little tidbit somewhere about the locations. :x I did, however, read on the DB wikia that the planet Broly practically bombed in a flashback bears a great resemblance to a part of New Planet Vegeta, although I haven't been able to verify for myself yet.

What I meant by timeline isn't where it would fit in the overall series, but how many days the events took place over. Sorry, I probably should've specified.

I like to think it's set in a what if timeline in which Vegeta killed Cell instead of letting him absorb #18. And thus Gohan and Goku for some reason decided to stop training in the room of spirit and time.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

Well, #18 isn't around at all so it's possible that Vegeta's Final Flash offed Perfect Cell instead. I've actually tried to think of how every movie could fit into "what if" timelines because of the changes in the movie, not sure if I should make a topic about it.

It would basically fit into a timeline happening after this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtUnOobXvwU

The second one wouldn't work, as Goku and Gohan would have still trained to obtain FPSS, the same as our universe. That should mean Gohan would be stronger than his dad from the moment they exit the RoSaT, and thus more of a threat to Broli than his father was. Yet Goku still felt the need to attempt to act as a shield for his son, instead of letting him face up to the challenge on his own without wanting to step in, like he initially did against Cell until Piccolo opened his eyes.
