That won't change the darkness found in the masters FUNi has for the Raditz episodes anyways. So, no matter what, the Levels can't have the best colors, as there is always be a better source.dballfan wrote:Darkness can easily be altered by changing the brightness if people feel that way. Dunno, Raditz has a little too much of a yellow pigment if you ask me.dballfan wrote:Darkness can easily be altered by changing the brightness if people feel that way. Looks more like a Namek - In the originals he always had that sort of green complexion , the same green as King Piccolo and Kami - for some reason though he become a lighter green in the dragon boxes. The skin coloring also looks perfect on the levels, clearly too pinkish on the others.

Kinda. Apparently one of the directors approved the color scheme. What I want to know is, who is this director?

I honestly always just assume that whenever 'director approved' is mentioned for DBZ that they mean Chris Sabat.
I have no evidence of it, but it's the closest I can figure.

This cinches it for me, I don't want to waste money on these levels.EricM wrote:Here's a bunch of comparisons I made: the Dragonboxes were upscaled to 1440x1080 in Photoshop, and pillarboxes were added for easier comparing the Blu-ray. Yes, FUNimation did a bang-up job this time, and the remastering looks top-notch compared to any of their previous efforts. I see no real problems with this release from the standpoint of someone wanting to purchase Dragon Ball for the first time.
But I see too many things I don't like in them for me to want to go out and spend money on them myself after buying the DBoxes. And here's why. Look at Piccolo in this shot. His purple clothes have 3 levels of shading on both Dragon Box shots. They only have 2 levels of shading on the Level shot. FUNi did an absolutely spectacular job on the restoration this time, but FUNi's old masters just aren't that good quality. They can only get so much out of them. Plus, the grain looks FAR worse on the Blu-rays to me. Add that to the fact that, yes, the lines are sharper, but I'm not seeing the same Night-and-day difference in the level of clarity and additional detail that I saw on the Yu Yu Hakusho Blus, and I just don't think this warrants a pick up.
Anyone who hasn't gotten the DBoxes, or who absolutely needs the Faulconer score tho? You guys finally have a worthwhile release to get yourselves.

I do agree with this part. Imagine how good these could be if they had Toei's original masters.DemonRin wrote: FUNi did an absolutely spectacular job on the restoration this time, but FUNi's old masters just aren't that good quality. I can see all three levels of shading on his pants in every shot, if that's what you're referring to.DemonRin wrote: But I see too many things I don't like in them for me to want to go out and spend money on them myself after buying the DBoxes. Mind, it's a heck of a lot darker, but "harder to see" doesn't mean it's completely gone, like what could be said for some of FUNi's earlier remastering attempts.
What's more bothersome is how the contrast makes Piccolo's skin have yellow-green lights and jungle green darks. That's just not consistent.

I was about to say the same thing.KiddoCabbusses wrote:I can see all three levels of shading on his pants in every shot, if that's what you're referring to.DemonRin wrote: But I see too many things I don't like in them for me to want to go out and spend money on them myself after buying the DBoxes. I say calibrate the monitor, I'm at my editing workstation and the FUNimation Level set has those three shadings.DemonRin wrote:This cinches it for me, I don't want to waste money on these levels.EricM wrote:Here's a bunch of comparisons I made: the Dragonboxes were upscaled to 1440x1080 in Photoshop, and pillarboxes were added for easier comparing the Blu-ray. If I'm looking for the right difference, it looks like the Bricks have 3 shades too.Krycek7o2 wrote: I say calibrate the monitor, I'm at my editing workstation and the FUNimation Level set has those three shadings.
Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
DemonRin, your monitor must be terrible, because I can see the 3 shades of Piccolo's clothes EASILY. Plus, as everyone has pointed out, Episode 1 looks MUCH worse than the rest of the series.

I can see 3 shades if you count the shades on both his legs.
But if you count the shades on only his left leg, I can only see 2 shades in the levels image. Whereas I can see 3 shades on his left leg in the Dragonbox images.

Again, I see all three shades. Try jacking up the contrast/brightness if you're really concerned about this.Kid Trunks wrote:I can see 3 shades if you count the shades on both his legs.

... on a completely random note, should I find it interesting that both the Level and DBox shots here have a white speck in the exact same position near the top-left in the sky?
Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
FUNi did use the same source so... Yes, it should be there.KiddoCabbusses wrote:gain, I see all three shades. Try jacking up the contrast/brightness if you're really concerned about this.

It should also be noted that the first episode looks particularly bad in comparison to the others. It always has on FUNi's part for some reason.

FUNimation is not using their old masters for the Blu-ray. Their actually using the original film masters from Toei.

I'll still wait for the next FUNi release. The Levels look awesome, but still not perfect, and I want a perfect release.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Eh, I dunno. I can make out the shades, yes, but the colors are a lot darker than they need to be. Piccolo's pants look almost black on that thumbnail.jjgp1112 wrote:DemonRin, your monitor must be terrible, because I can see the 3 shades of Piccolo's clothes EASILY.
